    For me this is the perfect type of vlog for photography. Out on the shoot firstly going through your thought processes then back home showing us how you get the final results. Also the fact you don't go into too much detail with the editing just what you want to change and what you did but without showing absolutely everything. That can be a bit laborious. So all in all Dave a great format and as always I love your editing style. The final images were all excellent. The one with the berry shows what a keen eye you have to even see the possibilities of a photo 👍

    Loving the new approach - no ads and no sponsors is also a plus. Thanks for taking us through the processing logic and steps too. All the images worked to different degrees, but my favoutite was the tower and the berry bush. Merry Christmas, stay healthy and safe and have a fabulous 2022. Phil

    I remember going to Parys Mountain as a 15 yr old school kid. We were on a geology field trip and camped for a week I think it was near Llygwi. That was way back in the late 70's. Great video, thanks.

    The new format works really great. Not having B roll footage frees up the content I feel and makes for a much more concise video. The drone footage adds context and location which is all we need. The details on how you capture and process your images is real gold. Thanks for doing this. 👍👍

    • @DGriffGallery
      @DGriffGallery  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks a lot Kevin. Especially your feedback on the snippets of B-roll. I do think that from time to time it's worth 20 to 30 seconds setting up the context of a location but I will be keeping it mostly to a minimum and trying to stick to the point! 😊👍

    I quite like the new format Dave giving an insight into your thought processes is interesting. I usually visit Parys Mountain in the winter but when it's wet at Rhyd Ddu! I usually end up shooting abstracts around the colour banding areas which works well even on dull days and I love the area down the bottom of the quarry. On the odd occasion when the sun has broke through the colours are really fantastic. I was impressed by the level of consideration you gave to that lone berry

    • @DGriffGallery
      @DGriffGallery  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Peter, you're quite right the colour banding works well for close-ups and as it happens I have a friend who recently gained an RPS distinction with 20 images of just that subject! 😊👍

    Excellent video, once again, and it's given me the hankering to try dodging and burning, which I've never tried before. I usually work straight out of camera as much as possible, but the steep valleys and rock formations round here throw up a challenge to that ethos, with all the light and shade they create. When you announced this project last week, I immediately wondered if you'd rock up on Parys Mountain at some point: and here you are! I have never been, but first became aware of it in the 1980s BBC documentary "The Celts", and always hankered to visit. Thanks for the pointers on when the best times and conditions for photography at Parys Mountain are. I'd hate to trapess all the way there, at the wrong time and without checking the weather forecast, to boot. The photography pointers are very useful for me, too, as part of my Miura peninsula project will be the abandoned tuff quarries at Mount Takatoriyama, which I've never quite managed to do justice to, as yet. I don't know what my fascination for mines and quarries is - maybe memories of childhood summers in Clwyd, visiting relatives who lived in the shadow of the quarry at Dyserth. All the best, Johnny in Japan.

    That was fascinating following your thought processes on each image. The "berry over the river" is a wonderful image - how on earth did you spot a single berry ?!!. As for Parys, I find this place fascinatingly frustrating as there is so much colour and texture competing with each other and then the inevitable sky is rarely cooperative. I was delighted to see it took a whole lot of your significant skills and experience to capture the essence of the place. A very informative vid DG. Now i had better watch it again to see if I can pinch some processing tips :)

    The Ford at the River is very overgrown remember it a open road.
    It's like a other planet at parys mountain, remember going there years ago at this time of year and the colors were amazing. Got to go few feet into one of the underground mines at the time as there were a professional potholing team there at the time. ( rather them than me 6 ft in was all I could do) they were there before a TV show was to film there not sure of name now but Dr Alice Roberts was in it from Time Team.

    Nice shots Dave, especially Parys Mountain. I tried in when in Anglesey but it was a dull day and I wasn't happy with the results. The sunny sidelight makes a big difference. Also, surprised you didn't add your signature deep vignette to the Hawthorne berry shot to push us into the centre.

    I was going to make this comment on your last video, but it applies to this one as well. You break down your process between 1) capturing pixels and 2) processing them. To be honest, I am intimidated by the processing part because I thought Lightroom would be sufficient for me and that is why I have the photography subscription. Of course, that does include Photoshop. You utilize layers and add-in applications to Photoshop (and I assume Lightroom as well). I will continue to subscribe to your channel to observe your use of focus stacking while capturing pixels, and the use of layers while processing. It's just that I am not worthy.

    • @DGriffGallery
      @DGriffGallery  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello David, thank you so much for watching and being good enough to take the time to make contact.
      Firstly, though, I have to take issue with you insofar as any discussion about worthiness goes. That is patiently untrue, and it is simply a matter of learning by slow steps and assimilating information and techniques which will assist you with processing. In much the same way that someone learns to drive a car, or indeed, handle a camera. Think back to your first time and how strange it all seemed and consider how over a period of time familiarity and practice bring it all together and before you know it it is all second nature.
      Secondly, let's talk specifically about processing. You make a very good point in that I do make use of additional tools and techniques which on the face of it fall outside of the options built-in to Lightroom in Photoshop. However, a very simple rebuttal to any suggestion that they are necessary, or to a large degree offer results unobtainable by those primary applications is completely untrue. There is, with the sole exception of noise reduction algorithms, nothing at all which I do with my particular processing workflow which cannot be achieved without those additional applications. The only reason I choose to use those is because they make it much quicker and much easier, but they do not offer anything which otherwise couldn't be achieved.
      I really hope this helps to clarify my processing approach for you, and I really hope that I can encourage you to have more confidence in your ability. Not necessarily as it stands with regards to processing but that with a positive attitude towards learning there is nothing whatsoever to prevent you from getting to whatever level you would like to, and feel comfortable with. 😊👍
