My grandfather worked at the cement factory (30 years) in Victorville and my father went to high school there before WWII. During the Depression my father hunted jack rabbits to help provide food for the family. When I was a kid (50's/60's) we would stay with my grandparents just out of town. We would go down to the Mojave river 200 yards from the house. It was about 1 food deep and 10 feet wide of clear water. When we would go into town with grandpa he seemed to know everyone.
Circa 1983 I was living in Big Bear. Lane’s crossing was for sale and I love the old barn. I decided that I would try to buy it, but life happened and I went in another direction. I loved that old place!

Having grown up in Apple Valley, Victorville was where we did most of our shopping and Sunday drives to the Methodist Church early every week. And then a stop at the local market to pick up the Sunday newspapers before driving back to the Jess Ranch where we lived. .
I never knew the founding of Victorville was due to the reasons outlined here. I literally always thought it was because people needed a place to stop on their way to Vegas that was closer than Barstow LOL.
I was born and raise in that area. My old high school is 2 minutes from the bridge, I was born 5 minutes south of the bridge. I spent my whole life there until I had to get out of CA due to life there. The area has really gotten ghetto, back when I was a kid it was nothing like that. Its crazy. At least twice a year I like to go visit my family there, and drive around a bit. Oh, how the sunrise there is the most beautiful!
My Mom lived in Wrightwood and we used to shop at the mall, it had a Macy’s. The last time I was there & in Phelan, I was shocked to see how the cities had changed. Haven’t been there since 2016.
My dad was stationed at George from 1973 to 1979. He retired and we moved to Apple Valley. been here ever since. Not the place that it used to be unfortunately, but I guess no places is.
I was at George 86-87. I lived in Adelanto. There was a doughnut shop and a trucking company. Victorville was empty. Party and shopping is either in San Berdu or LA. Then you have to deal with Cajon Pass coming back. Empty road to 29Palms and treacherous hill climb to Big Bear. It was peaceful back then.
I pass through here a lot. Make a game of seeing if the local bums are on stimulants or downers that day. It was downers today. Uppers, you get lots more action....
I heard that indigenous natives lived here by the river for thousands of years before white invaders took over. It was called Columbia valley by Spanish explorers. But Idk what it was called in native language. I don't even know what language they spoke
The Serrano Tribes and the Mohave Tribes were the most populace and ended up banding together as the Morongo. A lot of them were sent to texas too. The Native Americans have footprints in the sand all around this desert. Im looking into covering their heritage here out of respect too since they come up fairly often.
