    I drove for Roadway in Adelanto,Ca and would run this route to Barstow to the railyard. This route was always my favorite and especially at night. I use to pull over and just stare off into the stars, the sky was so clear. I drove this route for over 10 years and had always seen these sights but never knew the history behind them. This video is awesome, thanks so much, makes me long to drive cross country to drive that route just one more time.

    I grew up in Oro Grande from age 2 thru 15. In 1979 we were bussed to Victorville to attend Jr. and Sr. high school. The bus stop was right in front of the old roadhouse shown at 6:34. It was called the "Stop Inn" Cafe. The cafe would open around 6am, and the bus would arrive around 7:15am. The owner would let us hang out inside on cold mornings (yes, the Fall thru Spring mornings in the High Desert were very cold). He even let us go into the bar area where me and a couple of my friends would play pinball. I remember the Stop Inn got a video "PONG" game in the early '80's.

    I'm from Arkansas, I was there in Victorville a month ago working at the cement plant right off 66. You can see it in one of your first photos after museum right after going under ih15. I remember seeing those huge power lines too. The plant was the tallest building around so to have the chance to climb up it and see for miles was pretty cool.

      @omaeve 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, if you looked up the cliff at the cement plant, our house was on the bluff up there cause I used to tell the children to line up with the chimney on the cement plant to make sure they were getting back home in the right place to get lost in the desert we haven’t lived there since my husband got out of the Air Force and 91

      Mike Bailey the further north you go, the uglier it gets. lots of affordable housing projects have brought in tons of problematic people from the city. If you’re thinking about living here, just move to Phelan. It’s still just as aesthetically unpleasant but it’s a safe place and very nice if you like living in peace and quiet. No light pollution so you can actually see the stars at night

    I lived out in this area in the 90s. You make it sound so much more interesting than when I was living there. I know a lot of this stuff is historical, but when you live there it just doesn't seem that interesting and you kind of ignore it. Too busy cursing the heat I guess. XD It's funny how you never appreciate things when they are familiar.

    • @LividImp
      @LividImp 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@danielphill3224 I have relatives that still live in the area (and have had relatives in the area since the 50s). The crime and the drug problems are somehow even worse than when I was there (1990s was the peak of the crime statistics nationally). Neighborhoods are being left to fester, and the job situation is the same as ever (none). And last I remember, Bear Valley/7th are still the only ways to cross the freeway leading to traffic jams in a somewhat isolated city of only 100K or so? It's like all the problems of LA with none of the benefits.
      On top of it, Scanida has been there since when? The 1980s? So there have always been little things you can do. Sure a skate/water park are nice addition, but it's lipstick on a pig. Victorville's saving grace is that it is close enough to LA that you can get your work/entertainment from there.
      I've moved to the middle part of the state in a town that shares much of Victorville's lack of amenities, and I've learned to live with it and even appreciate it to a certain degree. So I'm not looking down on you or trying to bum you out, I'm just facing facts.

    Why was there no mention about the cement plant after the museum? Interesting you left it out.

    • @BackRoadsWest1
      @BackRoadsWest1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, we can't cover everything. At one point, we were planning on creating a video tour of all 3 cement mines/factories in the area, Southwest Portland (the one you mentioned), Riverside Cement Company and it's long history with Oro Grande, as well as Cushenbury out in Lucerne Valley, which we already have a lot of imagery of. Maybe some day...

    The cheapest gasoline sign was not a spoof !!! In the late 50's and early 60's my mom and aunt would talk back and forth about if they were going to put a whole $2.00 worth of gas in the car and if it would hold that much ! Because it already had a 1/4 tank !
