I grew up in Oro Grande from age 2 thru 15. In 1979 we were bussed to Victorville to attend Jr. and Sr. high school. The bus stop was right in front of the old roadhouse shown at 6:34. It was called the "Stop Inn" Cafe. The cafe would open around 6am, and the bus would arrive around 7:15am. The owner would let us hang out inside on cold mornings (yes, the Fall thru Spring mornings in the High Desert were very cold). He even let us go into the bar area where me and a couple of my friends would play pinball. I remember the Stop Inn got a video "PONG" game in the early '80's.
I drove for Roadway in Adelanto,Ca and would run this route to Barstow to the railyard. This route was always my favorite and especially at night. I use to pull over and just stare off into the stars, the sky was so clear. I drove this route for over 10 years and had always seen these sights but never knew the history behind them. This video is awesome, thanks so much, makes me long to drive cross country to drive that route just one more time.
I grew up in Silver Lakes and have driven this route no joke like over a thousand times and I STILL learned something new with this video. Very good job. Thank you! This drive is ALWAYS a pleasure...

Nice to see this part of Route 66. I lived near Ogden, Ave, which in Illinois, is near the starting point of Route 66 on "our side" of the road. My dad was born on the day that Route 66 was opened, and he was proud of that fact.
I was stationed at George AFB (VV Logistic Airport now) from 86-90 and I think the furthest I'd ever gone on that road was to Oro Grand where we had softball practice in a park near the tracks. I should have soaked up more of the history but I was fresh out of high school and wasn't interested at the time. Thanks for the video!
The bottle farm guy is way too nice! He invited us into his home for a tour. He's a real interesting guy. . . . .OMG! The old man died???? Now that's sad, I'm very happy to say I met him. . .
Thanks! Same here. Lived in the Victor Valley for 30 years. Moved to Utah 8 years ago. Yup, one does have to dress up a pig to make the area look good, but really, everywhere in Mojave Desert is no different. And there's lots of cool history.
You left out the Cemex cement plant that is in your picture , across from the museum, it just turned 100 years old and was basically the reason for the development of Victorville.
And the old jail house strait across the tracks from the museum, and the fire truck on display came from the original V.V. fire house that was in the cement plant originally as far as I know.😊
I'm from Arkansas, I was there in Victorville a month ago working at the cement plant right off 66. You can see it in one of your first photos after museum right after going under ih15. I remember seeing those huge power lines too. The plant was the tallest building around so to have the chance to climb up it and see for miles was pretty cool.
Yeah, if you looked up the cliff at the cement plant, our house was on the bluff up there cause I used to tell the children to line up with the chimney on the cement plant to make sure they were getting back home in the right place to get lost in the desert we haven’t lived there since my husband got out of the Air Force and 91

Mike Bailey the further north you go, the uglier it gets. lots of affordable housing projects have brought in tons of problematic people from the city. If you’re thinking about living here, just move to Phelan. It’s still just as aesthetically unpleasant but it’s a safe place and very nice if you like living in peace and quiet. No light pollution so you can actually see the stars at night
I’m kicking myself for never having gone in that Route 66 museum. I love the history my hometown has, it’s just very sad to see what most of it has become.
Worked at silica mine in Oro Grande back in 1970 and lived in an old house on North side of Old iron bridge with a buddy for a short time. Later move to Apple Valley and am glad I got out of there.
I’ve lived in Adelanto for 9 years and I’ve only been to Old Town Victorville twice 💀
