It's basically a more fun version of magic where you can't lose on the first turn.

Pokemon TCG is just magic for kids. It was even created by wotc back in the day. It's always fun to stomp on some kids on live after being stomped at pioneer nights at my locals lol

WOTC was the publisher of the game in the west but they weren't involved in the game design. The game was designed by Tsunekazu Ishihara, Takumi Akabane, and Kouichi Ooyama at Creatures Inc., the 3 of which were previously development leads of the video game EarthBound. Besides, the game plays vastly different from Magic: The Gathering outside of the superficial similarities between Energy cards and lands. Hearthstone and Yugioh are more similar to Magic than Pokémon is.

@Chiffonaise to say lands and energys similarities are "superficial" is crazy. They're literally the same thing, besides where you place them on your playmat. One gets attached to an individual card, while the other gets placed in a communal pool of resources to be divided up as you please.
I've never played hearthstone, so I can't speak to that game, but to compare pokemon or magic is yugioh is also crazy. Sure, they have creatures/monsters, and you draw cards? But that's where the similarities end, for either game.

@@noisepoIIution The main difference is that Energy doesn't pay for casting cost, since they don't really exist in Pokémon. That's why I say lands and Energy are only superficially similar. There are many other TCGs, including one WOTC created themselves called Duel Masters which have an equivalent resource system that's used to pay for casting cost.
I agree that Magic and Yugioh don't play anything alike either, but at the very least they both have a life system, instant speed mechanics, and a combat system that isn't KO (point-based).
With Pokémon, the only similarities the game with Magic are fundamental things that most TCGs share. Despite this, it's still true that the game was inspired by Magic: The Gathering, like all TCGs are. But it's not really designed by WOTC, and the game isn't really a simplified version of MTG for kids (that's what Duel Masters is). It's pretty much it's own thing.
