Good to hear 👍 I hope I have a similar bonding experience with my kids when they are older. I enjoyed teaching my older niece and nephews, and it is a bridge to learning problem solving and critical thinking. My niece won her first Prerelease event and her confidence went up 100%
@@gentrelane Don't know if you have kids but if you do, and they're learning to read, and they like Pokemon, it's the perfect motivation. That first Farfetch'd you showed is illustrated by the incredible Tomokazu Komiya. He's one of the oldest and most prolific artists in Pokemon and is one of my personal favorites. Seeing those old pokemon arts hit me in the nostalgia so hard. It's difficult for me to ever get back into the pokemon TCG since I always feel really melancholy when looking at them now after my mom sold my collection in a garage sale back in the 90s (which included a couple Charizards that today would sell for a lot)
Yknow, if it makes you feel any better,, alot of those old charizards, from the base set are really only worth a couple hundred bucks, most in fact, Unless you have a very specific, shadowless variant of the first edition card. And even THAT card isnt worth the millions people think it is. A couple of celebrities, namely one of the paul brothers, and i think the rapper logic. WAY over payed for a couple of them during covid and sent everyones perception of value through the roof. So its probably not quite as depressing as you think. You maybe lost out on $300
@@RealGuitarGIt's not about money, though. I'd never sell my cards (It's just the basic set + a few promo for the 1st movies). Instead I gave a few of them to my nephew who collects them. It allows them to get a new life with someone who will appreciate them, so it's worth it
I love that you ventured into Pokemon even just for a week. I'm surprised you didn't mention the main differences between arena and ptcgo - gathering cards is much easier. And in real life you can build top meta decks for $50-100
I didn't have to pay much for my Gardevoir ex deck, I pre-planned it before the SV English set released, so I was able to buy a lot of the singles for way cheaper than they are now, like Gardevoir with Shining Arcana.
@@Aka-Spade so being a very new player, a couple months ago I was just buying boosters if I saw them at checkout lines, and I'm at Rite Aid and go "eh sure I'll buy this Deoxys V battle deck, I don't own a full 60 yet." And lo and behold I get home and see that the 2 Shining Arcana Gardevoir in it basically cover the price of the deck with their value lol so that's how I decided to go for Gardevoir ex as my first standard deck
Pokémon’s lower entry cost to get into makes it more accessible to new players, and they have better intro sets like their stadium box. Also, the digital card code is just a bonus, you get to buildup a physical and digital collection for double the fun.
This video was a lot of fun. I especially enjoyed the "coffee break" segment. (You might be able to post those as their own video.) And the $10 of Pokémon cards that made you happy also made me happy. Thank you for sharing another piece of your joy with us.😊
Amazing video, your order was great, getting cards just because they look cool is a fantastic reason to get cards. Love seeing your take on Pokémon, the game that started and is still a mainstay of my TCG journey
This is a great analysis of Pokemon & MTG. I've played MTG off & on since the late 90s & then a few years ago got into Pokemon because of my oldest daughter's interest. We play together regularly & it's been fun to see the similarities & differences & having to think about strategies & logistics across the games. It's great to see the love of both games on display here, so thanks, Dev!
Hi! As a Yugioh player I really enjoyed this video, especially how for both, Magic and Yugioh, Pokemon cards read insane. Iono for example is, also unimaginable for Yugioh. Think about it, pot of greed, a card that (with no cost) makes you draw two cards is banned and will be like that forever. However, it is so interesting how Pokémon TCG can balance those things out and, while card advantage is important, unlike Yugioh, it is not basically what dictates any game.
When you mentioned United Wings at the end of the video I got really excited because I actually decided to learn Pokémon recently myself, just because I was interested, and the deck I learned on was United Wings. My friend had described it as "Ikoria standard era Zenith Flare, except your creature's attack is the Zenith Flare"
I love how a lot of those nostalgia reprints are powered up from their original counterparts but Haymaker all-star Electabuzz is almost identical save for the resistance to a type that didn't exist when it was first printed. Same for the unkillable wall Chansey.
I got into the Pokémon TCG with my kid and that’s actually what drew me into MTG. Enjoy playing both and think there room to enjoy both. Like you said, life is too short to it do what you enjoy.
That waves of nostalgia that hit me during the coffe break along with ur commentary nearly broke me. Thank you Dev. P.S. that intro with the little history then the beat drop was fire
Dev!! I always think about commenting on your videos and then I don't follow through, but now is the time. We have a similar history. I first noticed this when you were covering InQuest magazines a while back; I grew up reading those as well. I also got my Pokémon cards at Books-a-Million as a 12 year old. There's more but I don't have to go into it. Anyway - I really appreciate this video. I haven't played the Pokémon TCG since 2003, but my favorite thing about it was how many cards I could draw. Before those cards were limited to once a turn some decks would draw 30 or 40 cards in one turn. It was invigorating. And I miss it. I had no idea there was a digital Pokémon TCG. So thank you for this; I'm gonna give it a shot and go say hello to Muk, Primeape, Linoone, and all my other old friends. Lastly - if you ever wanna play that Pouncing Jaguar again - I'd like to invite you to the Premodern format of Magic. It's a warm and welcoming community, both in person and on our discord and Facebook group, and it's the most fun I've had playing magic that I can recall in the last decade. 10 Land Stompy lives on, there. Take care, and no pressure to respond. Just wanted to say hi.
I just stumbled upon this channel and the title got me I'll admit, but I watched the entire thing and I was shocked at how witty and well spoken the host was. Definitely a sub from me...time to go down the rabbit hole with his other videos
Great video. I'm a former judge and MTG player (though haven't been playing for about 18 months) and were introduced to playing Pokemon by a freind several years ago. We always had some great games and your video really reminds of those times. I'm currently not really a part of game community, as I've been pursuing other interests (filmmaking), but you video made me recognise Pokemon a potential. (Like you, I also played Pokemon games years before the freind introduced me to the game, and had a handful of cards.)
❤ dev, thank you for the MTG/pokemon comparison. One of my coworkers wanted to teach me Pokémon but he didn't know Mtg - so his description of the game didn't make a whole whole lot of sense. But, you masterfully summarized (by comparing it to mtg) pokemon in, what, 3 minutes?! 🙏
This is a fun video. I have childhood memories from pokemon but innever knew how to play it at all. I feel like im finaly gaining knowledge forbidden to my childhood
Dude dev the beginning of this video hit so hard it gave me goosebumps core memories for sure I pulled a brushland and thought I had hit a savannah lol never will forget the rush then the let down
Thanks for the vid, Dev. I enjoyed this venture into Pokemon and would definitely watch a channel where you review new Pokemon sets! Appreciate you, dude, always glad to see new videos by you in my feed, keep rocking!
The Historic Brawl statement cut me deep as I am a Standard Main player...who is now loving playing some of my favorite cards in Historic Brawl. Love the content keep up the great work and I can't wait for the Fall
Sadly people are going to hate on this video for being Pokémon, but as someone who’s never played, this was a really cool video to watch, mtg is basically the only card game I play, so to see someone’s perspective on cards and talk about evaluating cards was really really interesting, keep it up dev!!!! :)
If you wanna make pokemon videos, you should do it. Your magic content is great, genuine, straightforward and relatable. You will do well with Pokemon.
Great to see Dev play some pkmntcg. I've played the online client on and off for a couple years - really gutted they moved to the new client full of bugs and lack of my favorite EXPANDED format. That's where I've gotten my Combo fix after Arena's been 'moving away' from that archetype, probably intentionally 😢
IMHO that’s how I feel when I play commander, “the game I used to love”. It harkens to back to the playground days when people made decks over 100 cards with only singleton copies because that’s all they had and could afford and because they wanted to play all the cards they love, efficiency be damned! And to get to play with multiple players with all the banter and friendships that came with it…that’s what the game was always about.
I got into pokemon recently and the main thing that makes me excited to play it is it's just so much more affordable than magic to play competitively. being able to pay less than 80 bucks for a tier 1 standard deck is just amazing.
Stumbled upon this video ‘cause I’m a Pokémon tcg player that is interested in MTG and sorta know how to play. I absolutely loved this video! Pokémon can get crazy but is fun. There’s different formats like, Standard, Expanded, legacy, unlimited, and my personal favorite, Gym Leader Challenge which is Pokémon’s equivalent of MTG Commander! Makes me happy that you’re experiencing the Pokémon tcg to the fullest! Collecting AND playing!! Cheers! :D
Dev is just such a wonderful fellow. My son has gotten me into Pokemon TCG as I have fallen out of buying most MTG product since New Capenna maybe? But hey, my son loves it and I can play a fun card game with him and collect cards. Win win win.
Not a magic player or a pokemon tcg player but im fimilar with both enough to follow the video and i find your delivery and humor 10/10! keep it up dude
As a huge pokemon fan, content creator, and tcg player, this video was impressive. Better explained than I could ever do, lol. You should do a 2nd channel, but until then, I will definitely sub to this channel.
Your video convinced me. I now have Chien-Pao, Lost Box Giratina, and I am currently building Gardevoir, Mew Fusion Strike, and Regidrago/Arceus. I participate in my locals every year.
Dev, I found your channel when my cousin introduced me to MTG while I was in law school, and it became an escape for me from my studies and some of the most stressful times in my life. I love your genuine love for the game, and how you speak about it with such passion and enthusiasm. Thanks for all you do, and thanks for drawing so many of us into this game. Much love!!
I worked at a game store about 5 years ago and I learned to play Pokemon there. I totally agree that it felt VERY powerful, and it was a lot of fun to pick up and play! The thing that holds it back for me is that it's a fairly rigidly 2 player game. When I play magic I would say that about 80% of the time there are more then just 2 players, so swapping to Pokemon... or at the very least ADDING Pokemon to the game night roster was difficult to pitch to my buddies
Unfortunately, yes, however, there are a lot of "underground" formats you can play in Pokemon if you look for them. I do envy Magic for having draft but Pokemon has some cube draft going on as well as Pick a Pack.
Dev, thank you for making this video. I am Gen 1 Pokémon fan and TCG Player since 2011. I have been playing MTG since 2017. There are great things about both games. I truly encourage players from both games to try the other. You did an amazing job on this video explaining each card and all the meta decks. I am looking forward to your second channel with more Pokémon. Thanks for all the content and videos.
Thank you for the video. I too have started playing Pokemon TCG and currently piloting Mew/Genesect. Its loads of fun and extremely cost effective compared to MTG standard decks atm.
I haven't played magic since theros, nor pokemon TCG since the 00's, but this video was a nice little overview of pokemon and really tempted me to pick up some packs. If you make that Pokemon TCG side channel I think I'd subscribe.
I'm on the same boat. Got tired of MTG and took a break for a while. Then I rediscovered Pokemon TCG and have been at it for almost a month. Pretty cool, having fun and all, playing a couple of games a day, not to mucho 😁 nice video dude! Cheers!
I keep telling MTG players that if they give Pokemon a shot they'd be surprised how fun they might have. And they always scoff and refuse to try it. It sucks, because there's lots of fun games out there and I'm glad to see more people trying them :)
I played the pokemon tcg competitively with some friends a few years ago and basically pioneered the meta durant mill. the deck was so good because of all the rampant card draw and it hard countered mewtwo, the strongest card in the format solely because its attack cost colorless energy so it could be "splashed" in any deck. then darkrai EX came out in the next set, instantly became meta, and killed any chances the durant deck had at staying in the meta. the next tournament I went to was the last one I went to because out of over 100 people a single digit number of people were running anything other than darkrai EX. at that point we all decided that was it for us in the competitive pokemon scene.
Ive been with you since 2016 Dev and im still with ya. Lately ive felt the same way as you so much so that i picked up one of the world championship Pokémon decks so i could live that Pokémon magic!
God damnit I didn't think anything would make me want to play the pokemon tcg again. I played from basic till neo and this brought back so many memories. I also got my start playing in books a million and then later the toys r us next door. Got rid of the cards once I found L5R and mtg but the waves of nostalgia I got from this video is insane
I lol’ed multiple times this video. It was great! Where’d you get that sweet shirt?! I played ptcg and the gameboy games as a kid too. Then last year my then-5-year old son got obsessed with Pokémon and I dusted off my old collection and taught him to play. This last year was really fun getting back into it with him and seeing him experience it all for the first time.
Glad you enjoyed it! I came from old school Yu-Gi-Oh, learned Pokémon to get my daughter's excited to go to the LGS with me, and fell in love it. I love how straight forward it is. I've since dipped my toes into several TCGs and, while each have their charm, I think Pokémon is still my favorite to play with people.
I found your channel WAYYYYYY back with your Gnarls Barkley Roottrapper elf deck from Origins Standard. So proud of how far this channel has come, great job man! I don't play magic nearly as much, usually prereleases and some EDH with my coveted Korvold deck. Been playing pokemon for a bit and your takes are spot on
While I never got quite as deep into Magic, and started later (RtR, I know, I’m a baby), this video resonated so much. I picked Pokémon TCG Live up at the start of Paldea Evolved and it was WILD how fast and chaotic the game is. Fusion Strike Mew is a monster. Great video!
I'm really happy I found this video. You are so honest and sincere about your hobby, and it really shows how games positively impact you and your mental health, and your passion for wanting to share that love with others is incredibly inspiring. I used to be a Pokemon Professor for TCPI back in 2017-2019, and I was a judge of some few TCG events in my area. I still play it now, and I've played it since base set in 98 or so. Sometimes I quit, but I always end up coming back because the game is just legitimately great fun, with incredible artwork and simple mechanics with complex mastery. TCG Live has made playing extremely affordable too, so my lower income doesn't gatekeep me from enjoying the game while also building my skill. Thank you for this video.
Man I wish you were a pokemon tcg player really like the style of your vids and vibe. I've played a bit of magic with friends decks and hearing pokemon from a magic player's perspective is awesome.
I collect pokemon cards but rarely play the game like I do mtg but pokemon makes me happier than magic, those days when I add new pokemon to my collection always seem like happiest days. My fav video u made so far❤
I am neither a Magic Player nor a Pokemon TCG player yet somehow I found this video and I'm glad I did. As someone who watches a lot of TH-cam I'm pleasantly surprised to say that this was one of the more engaging videos I've seen in a good bit. Entertaining and also relaxing (I loved the coffee break). So thank you for this content and I'll definitely be checking out other vids!
Thanks, Dev! We have a growing Pokemon community at the store (where I play Commander), and I've been considering giving it a try. (Pokemon didn't exist when I was a kid, so I never played it.)
I know you from magic as I’ve been playing for about 10 years now. Last week i tried out pokémon and now i’m hooked. so awesome hearing your familiar voice in this pokémon rabbithole i’ve gone down haha. cheers
I just started playing pokemon. I played magic but for me yugioh was always more fun for me. The Digimon tcg seems pretty awesome to me, as well, from a gameplay perspective. There are so many fun tags. I enjoyed old magic a lot more than newer magic, when I played the online version. It was cool to hear your thoughts on pokemon tcg from a magic player perspective
Similar journey, but I began with yugioh, and the 1-turn meta game shut me down so hard that I could not stand it. Even casual decks had the same deal, just with different flavors. That kinda dulled me out through the years. When I started playing MTG (commander specifically), man. What a blessing. It all clicked so nicely. Now, I'm literally spending HOURS of my life, laughing, having fun with my friends (and making fun of them). A really great escape.
Dude! Great video as always. I would love to see you cover Pokémon content. You can love more than MTG. I'd really dig seeing you play. Thanks for everything you do.
I’m a 3 time Pokemon Worlds competitor for the TCG, and unfortunately that doesn’t leave much time for MTG, but when I saw this from one of my favorite MTG creators talking about Pokemon TCG, I was so stoked! What a fun video, only “miss” I saw is that Radiant Greninja is actually one of the scariest attackers in the format, it can be powered up with Mirage Gate in Lost Box decks and Baxcalibur in Chien Pao, which sometimes runs its’ whole strategy on Cross Switchers and Cancelling Cologne to get around Manaphy to attack with Radiant Greninja as early as T2 of the game knocking out 2 pokemon! Would love to see more pokemon videos, but also I love your magic content too, glad to see you had fun playing Pokemon.
I love hearing magic players react to pokemon. I’m just getting back into ptcg since my cousin was interested in playing a tcg… and neither of us have enough money for mtg. Plus ptcg is easier to learn.
I believe the reason Pokémon has so much card draw is out of necessity. You want that baxcalibur to use buster tail? That represents 6 cards: 3 Pokémon cards and 3 energy cards. And you also need specific Pokémon too. Baxcalibur can’t evolve off poliwhirl. This forces the game to give players more tools to find what they specifically need.
I primarily play yugioh and even for me the speed of pokemon, and the weight of your decisions in that insane environment, impresses me quite a bit. And beyond that, I'm glad you touched on my absolute favorite part of the pokemon tcg - the amount of joy a card can bring you is so far disconnected from its price. Very few cheap yugioh or magic cards bring me the amount of joy that a beautiful 5 cent pokemon card can just by holding and looking at it.
Pokemon is amazing! I don't play the TCG, but I do enjoy the video games a lot. Pokemon is pretty much the only franchise I play consistently and being a fan of Magic: The Gathering as well, it was cool to see this video from you, Dev. I hope all is well and take care!
Another long time Magic player here (2011) that has recently gotten back into Pokémon TCG (played in league as a kid during the OG NEO sets). The Pokémon meta is wide open right now, pretty amazing actually. The insane card draw and tutoring is a necessity for game where every creature is effectively a Voltron of 3-5 different cards (basic, plus evolution and energy).
Pokemon player here! I love getting to hear experiences from other TCG players on how they feel about Pokemon and I'm glad you had a great time trying it out! The bit at the end where you talk about our relationship to the cards as players is amazingly spot on! I love hearing stories as to what these particular cards mean to others and why. Great video! :)
Cool video, man. I'm an mtg player (edh) and lifelong Pokémon fan who also checked out Pokémon tcg kinda recently. I hadn't played the tcg since kitchen table stuff as a kid. I picked up the Mew vmax precon a couple of months ago. It was super cool that the precon gave you a code for the online game. Ended up playing it online for a while and had a great time with it. Seeing your whole deck with Genesect every game is wild to experience.
just stumbled onto this vid and your channel. I'm right there with you. Just got into pokemon because my 5 year old son wanted to check it out. Been a magic player since college in '04 and playing pokemon just feels nostalgic. You nailed it.
One of the biggest things about players playing so many cards that shuffle cards back in from our discard pile is that lets us discard our 1 ofs more liberally since we can just get them back later. Another is with no side board and a 60 card cap that makes every space super important.
Came across this video after recently buying my first box of Pokemon cards since i was a kid, and i have to agree with you. It's nice to have a game that is fast and straightforward, and doesn't require a huge budget to get into. I also like that PTCGL has no micro transactions and no ads, so i feel less bad about wasting time on it (though it still turns my battery into a portable space heater...). I hope to see some more videos of yours, this was very well made and i enjoyed your narrative style.
I didn’t know your channel existed. Now I do. And boyOboy, it is a very good channel. I like the pace, the content and the humor. Nice job! Also: As a former PTCG and Magic player, this was a beautiful way to spend 21 minutes and drink my morning cup of coffee.
Thank you Dev for reminding me of what it was like being a young, post-secondary lad entering into the world of MtG! The only TCG I had played until that point (2011) was Pokémon. My friend's brothers got our whole friend group into MtG one night. I kept trying to play anything that wasn't a creature for free and with no limit, as if they were trainer cards, lol. I also kept trying to attack opponents' creatures and with exactly one of my own (I played a lot of double battles in Pokémon). It didn't make any sense until later how an Equipment was a spell, either, lol. Great times! The card I'm bonded to most would have to be my first rare, Sunblast Angel (a close second would be Perilous Myr).

This is actually kind of a tame standard compared to the wild west says of the early game, particularly around Gym I/II

And in real life you can build top meta decks for $50-100
yeah 3rd and 4th place on the last internation championship (not worlds just a big event) are both under $50
@@R8Spike and not NAIC winning, but people are still saying Gardevoir ex is best deck in format, and that's literally $30
5 mins in… I’m dying. You’re a riot. Glad I found your video.
This video was a lot of fun.
I especially enjoyed the "coffee break" segment. (You might be able to post those as their own video.)
And the $10 of Pokémon cards that made you happy also made me happy. Thank you for sharing another piece of your joy with us.😊
Amazing video, your order was great, getting cards just because they look cool is a fantastic reason to get cards. Love seeing your take on Pokémon, the game that started and is still a mainstay of my TCG journey
Dev spittin as always. I just quit Magic a few months ago and found my way back to PTCG and love it. I hope to see you on the ladder, broski
8:19 Tail Smash: Literally fails if you flip Tails 💀
It's not used for the attack at all. It just stays on the bench for the ability
I saw all the cards on the couch and started to judge a little bit... until I turned around and realized my house looks exactly the same!
If you liked standard, you should look into Gym Leader Challenge! It’s Pokémon’s version of commander and it’s an absolute blast to play
I have a strong bond to GLC because it originates from one of my LGS’s
to be honest, I don't play standard pokemon at all any more because GLC is so much fun. The games never play out the same way twice
Baxcalibur is also super playable in water glc decks
Ya but commander sucks
@@clutchgameplays6571you live in Ohio?
1:10 thanks for making me clean my screen only to find out it wasn't even dirty
I LOVE THE CARDS YOU PICKED! So many Pokemon people just disregard and disrespect cards that arent chase cards
It just sounds like they are more into collecting the cards, rather than playing the game.
@@Chicken008 no people only chase the dollar signs and perceived value if they only like top chase cards
@@Chicken008A lot of Pokémon fans JUST collect the cards but don’t play with them
I love my Leon Charizard Deck and Krabby V and Kingler Deck!
Hell yeah dude! Farfetch'd is my favorite Pokémon of all time and it absolutely rules!
This was really fun! I would highly enjoy some more Pokemon videos! Keep up the great work!
As a new player of both of the games from the last year and a half or so, you've got a new subscriber from me!
I would love to see more pokemon tcg content from you
Love you Dev!
Absolute banger video!
Cheers!
This dude is extremely likable never heard of him or the channel but at the 3:55 mark I was invested.
Me too. It's like listening to Penn Gilette talk about TCG's.
I keep telling MTG players that if they give Pokemon a shot they'd be surprised how fun they might have. And they always scoff and refuse to try it.
It sucks, because there's lots of fun games out there and I'm glad to see more people trying them :)
That's been my experience too.
It's never too late ; ) Neo cards were some of the best.
Great video, amazing intro. Thanks for the content Dev.
Yes, I’ll follow this channel and your new POKÉMON channel !!! Love your content
Man, that card haul gave me such a nostalgia dose! I recognized almost every single one of those cards. Brb, going to go dig up the old collection now
Pokemon TCG is amazingly fun. I still haven't built my own deck yet but I play it a lot more than I do Magic anymore. This video was amazing!
This was a wonderful video to happen upon. Glad you've been having a good time with Pokemon :)
Mtg has taught me to unnecessarily panic when I see your foils not sleeved and compressed between library books
I collect pokemon cards but rarely play the game like I do mtg but pokemon makes me happier than magic, those days when I add new pokemon to my collection always seem like happiest days. My fav video u made so far❤
Thanks for the nostalgia hit Dev 🙏 in a time where everything we love is being repacked and sold back to us this sincere look is refreshing
Last week i tried out pokémon and now i’m hooked. so awesome hearing your familiar voice in this pokémon rabbithole i’ve gone down haha. cheers
This is so cool! As someone who hasn't really dabbled into MtG but is familiar with Pokemon of course, I loved this video.
as someone who plays pokemon and used to play magic this video is very entertaining, well done.
@leoleo1035 card games are so fun. Yugioh is getting rush duels on duel links so it should be fun again
Just stumbled onto this video, but I really liked it and now I'm inspired to give it a shot.
When you said you purchased cards just because you liked the art or nostalgia? I felt seen. I owe you a fistbump.
Also, dude, go ahead and make Pokemon content. Just rename the channel to Strictly Better TCG
just stumbled onto this vid and your channel. I'm right there with you. Just got into pokemon because my 5 year old son wanted to check it out. Been a magic player since college in '04 and playing pokemon just feels nostalgic. You nailed it.
Love this vid. Makes me want to play Pokemon! Great to see you Dev!
I bought Pokémon for my daughter and I love Haunter the best! She loves Eevee like you.
The joke at 4:00 made me genuinely laugh out loud. You have earned a new sub this day.
The card I'm bonded to most would have to be my first rare, Sunblast Angel (a close second would be Perilous Myr).
i took this same trip back in 2020, playing a bunch of pokemon tcg online during the pandemic. haven't looked back since!
Man. This popped up in my recommendations… And I’m happy like how happy you are showing off your collection in your coffee break. Thank you 🫂
