    Hi! I am from the future. I loved this book. I study occult stuff and was getting some references and ALMOST got what Grant Morrison wanted. He is insane! Pure geniously insane.

    There are a lot of influences that Morrison used and most of what I got was from his own descriptions of the symbols and references that was included in the trade which was a godsend. I knew about Xibalba and the Mayan epic Popul Vuh and his themes of anti-natalism, nihilism and cosmic pessimism were inspired by the works and philosophies of Ray Brassier, Thomas Ligotti and Peter Wessel Zappfe. It seems his portrayal of God was also a direct reaction to Christopher Hitchen's " The Portable Atheist" in which he believes all gods are real, representing powerful elements of the human psyche and the eternal that exist beyond human comprehension. Its also good to know that the asteroid itself represents the six houses of torment of the Mayan underworld. Great read though it's definitely shelf worthy just for its rereading alone and analysis.

    I really enjoyed the book. I like having to think about it and kinda piece a puzzle together. GM is a great writer. This deals like it is going to be horror/sci-fi. The dream world aspect makes this interesting. I'm curious to see how this skill will translate to stopping an asteroid. Great video btw, keep up the great work.

    • @TheRealZubes
      @TheRealZubes 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I know that Image and Morrison were talking a lot about it being horror book and that he hadn't really worked on horror before. I'm also looking forward to seeing how all of these plot threads end up being woven together!

    Going from the geometric designs on the characters I'd say they're relying on Aztec myth for a good portion of the storyline, also shibalba also shows up in arronofsky's The Fountain which like all his movies is jawsomse. Makes me wonder if the ending is like the myth where the whole thing is a rebirth story and billionaut makes me think of asteroid mining although trillionaut is more aprops there

    • @TheRealZubes
      @TheRealZubes 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow I haven't thought about The Fountain since I first saw it. Good catch, I definitely did not remember that was mentioned in the film. This really makes the possible plot of this book thicken.

    Holy crap--I thought I was the only one who had nightmares about missing an entire semester of a class! That's...weirdly comforting to know it's common enough to be considered cliche. (And you're not reading too much into Morrison's story. He'd tell you it's because of the truth shaping inherent to individual perspective, but I'm going to tell you it's because he likes to reference stuff.)

    • @TheRealZubes
      @TheRealZubes 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a some really good insight on Morrison's writing style and his approach, both what he would say and what your take is on it. I could definitely see either of those being accurate.

    • @interregnum_
      @interregnum_ 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheRealZubes I once heard him say something along the lines of "if it means something to you, then it's real." He was equating the relevance of Batman with that of Jesus, at the time, but I think the basic idea still applies, here.

    Really enjoyed your breakdown and thoughts on this book, sadly, I just didn't enjoy the book itself. Like Batman Inc, I just can't get into the artist's style (not to say it's bad, it's just not for me) and Morrison has always been hit or miss.
    Another great episode. :]

    • @TheRealZubes
      @TheRealZubes 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well thank you very much! Also, thank you for saying you're not a fan of the book. I really think it's important when it comes to any type of art (fine art, music, comics, video games, etc.) to be able to say that you don't like something. Seriously, if we all liked the same things there would be no reason for creators to dig into their imaginations and show us new things. In the end, no matter how we feel about it we will take something away from it.

    I pick this book because i don't have to have all the background you need to understand Grant Morrison. When i read Joe the barbarian, it was a great book, so i hope this one also is a great book. I know, you always have to read the story several times and get the Wikipedia to catch all the references Morrison uses. Great video and see what comes in the following issues.

    I read _Nameless_ in full this December and thought it was the best comic I read in 2016 (if I had read it a couple weeks later, I easily would have given it to _Monstress_). That being said, I can easily understand how 99% of the population could completely hate it. Any thoughts now that the series has been completed?

      Archi Teuthis I'm late here, but i just finished reading this like five minutes ago, and I'm like WTF did i just read? It's not like I hate Nameless, it was very intriguing, but it was even more confusing for me than Lovecraft's stories, and that's saying something.

    Hm. If Sal wanted someone with a pretty face to pimp out his shirts, why didn't he get Ethan to do it :P JK Anyway, aside from the random falling from extreme heights dream, never really the other normal nightmares.
    I got this book because the weird fish people got my attention, and it did not disappoint. Kind of digging it so far, but yeah, it did seem more like a prelude than a first issue. How about a review of Bodies?

  • @loganbond7188
    @loganbond7188 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    A comic book reviewer who isn't familiar with Morrison's impact on comics -- not a good sign, especially when reviewing a Morrison comic...
    But I think you have potential, just need to take some time to get familiar with the giants of the industry. Keep it up.

    • @TheRealZubes
      @TheRealZubes 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey, thank you for checking out the video. I like to be honest about my knowledge of an artist or writer, instead of just pretending to be an expert on them. While I have read All-Star Superman and a little of Joe the Barbarian I don't feel that it's enough to say that I am familiar with him. However that doesn't mean that I'm not aware of his influence and importance in the comic industry.

    • @KWHere2
      @KWHere2 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheRealZubes Joe the Barbarian is great dude. I love how it was kind of a subversion of that "it was all a dream/day dream/fever dream/coma/hallucination." Cliche that the internet conspiracy theorists love to apply to everything. Even though it played it perfectly straight. Anyways. Good job and junk. Screw that pretentious jerk. You're doing great. Everyone at little house is doing great. Peace.

    • @loganbond7188
      @loganbond7188 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      KWHere2 Dude, I didn't want to be mean to the reviewer, but felt she might want to hear some 'constructive' criticism. I think I could have worded it better, though TheRealZubes's reply tells me she got the point of my remark. From my experience, there are a certain handful of names in the industry that have helped define the modern CB medium. It's hard to enter into a dialogue on the subject without reference to their works. So reading these classics would open her up to a much wider audience who might otherwise dismiss her, as I almost did. Which would be a shame, imo.

    • @KWHere2
      @KWHere2 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Logan Bond Well your wording did come off as a little pretentious in my eyes. I can respect that you admit that, and the fact that you can admit that shows that I jumped to conclusions about your supposed pretentiousness. Your constructive criticism just frankly didn't sound very constructive to me and I guess my defensive fanboy kicked in. I guess I'm really just saying you might have jumped to conclusions as well. I mean she clearly says she knows of Grant Morrison. She says she knows about his contributions. She doesn't have to be a fan. Especially with Morrison. He's a polarizing writer.

  • @MercysLittleShoww
    @MercysLittleShoww 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I skipped this one because Grant Morrison doesn't interest me at all. I've never read one of his books but everyone I know, people that love him, are always saying how they have to read his books multiple times in order to understand what the books about. I don't wanna have to do that. I don't know, I guess I just think comics should be fun and it shouldn't be work to read a comic. If that makes any sense.
    But as always I loved your review of this book. You are super awesome. Keep it up. :)

    • @TheRealZubes
      @TheRealZubes 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some of Morrison ' s books are like that, but most you can read and enjoy first time through. I would say to fully appreciate all of the goodies, and beautiful ideas morrison writes, you should read more than once. If you want what I consider to be the greatest comic of all time, i would read All Star Superman. It's not nearly as meta as Morrison is known to get, but is the most beautiful, heartfelt, and altruistic story I've ever read. It also features amazing artwork. Please give him a chance. Morrison really is worth checking out.

      6 years later but I think there's a difference between comics and graphic novels. Comics are things like Calvin and hobbies, or more mindless marvel series. Graphic novels usually have a message, politically, religiously, or philosophically motivated, i.e. Watchmen, or this.
