Capullo's got a great couple of interviews on the old "Fatman on Batman" podcast. He covers growing up, his early years as a working artist, submitting art to Larry Hama, working under Todd, and even how it was when he gradually and semi-covertly took over pencils for McFarlane (per Todds plan). He talks a lot about his drawing techniques, what books he studied and his style. He's a great storyteller. Its a great Kayfabe-esque podcast - all about craft. He comes back for another two episodes. Grant Morrison also has excellent interviews on the same podcast. If you can track them down, they are worth listening to: Fatman on Batman Episode #38-39: Capullo, and #26-27: Morrison. Very in-depth; its closest thing to Kayfabe shoot you could listen to at the time.

Love seeing how fast Capullo's work loosened and expanded from the first issue to the second. Back in the day, I went from "This isn't McFarlane!!" to "Capullo is my favorite artist!!" real quick. :D

Capullo's early style (inked by Mark Pennington) always reminded me of what Marc Silvestri (inked by Dan Green in X-Men) could have eventually evolved into if Jim Lee's ultra fine details weren't a factor.

Im an avid Spawn reader and I can tell you that Wynne is definitely a reoccurring character moving forward in Spawn.

I arrived later to the Image party, my first Image book was Brigade 3. Everyone was talking about WildCATS, Youngblood, and Spawn, but here in Puerto Rico it was kind of hard getting those first Image books on time. This was my first Spawn issue, I got it from a friend that wanted to trade for some X-Men. At first I was so glad I finally got a Spawn book, but when I noticed that the art was by some other dude that wasn't McFarlane, I felt ripped off by my pal.
Years later I wish I hadn't gotten rid of this book. I have nothing but admiration for Capullo's work.

I remember in 2002 waiting in a hotel lobby with my dad for the airport shuttle to pick us up and a guy started talking to us and he was Al Simmons and he’s like you ever heard of spawn I’m him and I was like uh ok dude thinking this dudes nuts he thinks he’s a comic character.

It’s interesting talking about capullo and his work ethic. I say this because he has talked on Kevin smith’s podcast about how for a certain portion of time he was an alcoholic during the years he did the early spawn run of books. He said he even missed lifting day’s because he was drunk or hung over and wrote that in his lifting journal/diary. So it’s just a interesting watching the boys miss the mark of what was really going on so badly. Speculation and blind impressions are often problematic when talking about art or process. It’s just fun to listen a hear the guys very confidently get things totally wrong.

Capullo is a fucking pro man. These books came out when I was 12 and getting em fresh. I fell in love Capullo's work immediately and I traced his stuff all the time when I was a kid. He's still one of my favs.

Redeemer and Jason Wynn are still around in current issues, but are different characters.
Wynn just recently came back as a new villain.
It would be nice to see you two review Spawn 300 and 301, the record tying and breaking issues for longest running creator owned comic because of the creative teams on them.

I think the line work style might be more with how the inkers interpreted his pencils here than him changing his style so much. Although it does evolve I think McFarlane inking him is what made it scream. Capullo was annoyed with the extra tics McFarlane added at first so he tried to add so much detail that McFarlane couldn’t possibly add any. However he found out no matter how much he gave Todd, he could always add more detail. So he gave up. HaHa

Y'all should check some of those fan art submissions at the back! years later some of them actually broke into the business! dudes like Gerry Alanguilan (long time inker of Leinil Yu) actually sent a piece of fan art for spawn back in the day.

    • @mattelder
      @mattelder 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Agreed. Would be interesting to see this as think one of the books was for the Executioner's Song storyline and was hard to 'adjust' post Jim Lee and Rob Liefeld and Whilco Portio leaving the main x-books (and would be interesting to view them through current eyes).

From what I recall back in the day, the reason they skipped 3 issues had to do with delays and solicition (I think in one of the letters columns it gets covered). From what I recall, and almost 30 years ago, Macfarlene was coping flack from comic book retailers as the posters advertised to be drawn by certain artists in issues 8,9,10 (?), didn't end up happening in the way it was advertised. Early days of Image was plagued by massive delays to comic books. MacFarlane generally was the less latest out of the group, but even then, I think the letters page starts to acknowledge the book will come out every 5-6 weeks, rather than monthly.
I think the solicitions had already been made for Spawn 19, 20. Issues 16,17,18 were already late and think he was financially penalised. So if he released 16, 17, 18, then 19,20 would have also been penalised. So Macfarlene just went "fine, I've copped financial penalities for 16-18, I'll just jump to 19,20 and make sure they are on time and print 16-18 later".... or could just be an urban myth (there may have been commentary in the Wizard Magazines at the time about it as well).

You guys should review the art school articles Capullo did in about a dozen of the earlier Wizard issues. Great stuff! About time Greg starts getting recognized as more than just a student of McFarlane.

That's gonna be awesome! Great covers. Hulk was always one of my favorites even before Bixby/Ferrigno immortalized him. I was even (almost) as much a fan of Bruce Banner. I've read just about every issue from the first appearance to around the time Byrne did him (mid-80's?), which as much as I loved the art I disliked the writing enough to only look at a few here and there and finally give up on him. But, boy the late 70's/early 80's getting to see him everywhere, TV (live, Saturday cartoons, weekday '60s cartoon reruns), comics (his own, Defenders, team-ups, Batman & Superman crossovers), action figures, coloring books, stickers, cars...what a fun time. And of all them, my favorite (most chilling too) was the Wendigo, Sasquatch one (1981?). Pure horror without gore (which required lighting and reactions and mood setting that gets ignored when guts and gore is used instead). Brrr. still gives me chills that cabin moment.

Of course the Crowley devotee would write in an insult to the true Redeemer Lord Jesus Christ, and sure why wouldn’t Todd be ok with it as the one who started it(?).

"Grant Morrison - Is he doing this on purpose?" perfectly sums up what I feel about Morrison's writing! Like, is he being intentionally obtuse and clever, clever, just to prove to everyone what a great writer he is? Personally, I gave up reading his comics, after trying to get through The Filth and Nameless and failing, eventually flinging them against a wall and telling them (and him) to F*CK OFF!!!
