As far as I remember Beholders can also petrify people and maybe use their Anti-magic cone to 'fix' them and direct them using said cone to a bunch of nearby adventurers.
Now the adventurers can't use magic or magic items but have to deal with other almost equally weak victims too. A fun idea because most of the time; the Anti-magic cone is useless as the Beholder's physical attacks are *shit* !

I had a flump tell my party that a puzzle was impossible and they'd die if they tried it. Additionally, before the puzzle, there was a plaque that read "give up now, look back, there is no point in moving forward." They turned away to move on, heard a click, and the door opened. The "puzzle" was actually a magical contraption that killed anyone who actively attempted to solve it and unlocked its mechanism when ignored.

Rules I've learned the hard way:
    1) never put something in a slot/hole in the wall you're not willing to lose.
    2) mimics aren't always chests.
    3) a clean dungeon is a gelatinous cube's home.
    4) better 30 ft near your party than 6 ft in the ground.
5a) a monster is always nearby a fully intact corpse.
5b) the monster _is_ the fully intact corpse.
    6) a room's most deadly trap is in the hallway before the room.
    7) every seen monster has an unseen friend in the corner.
    8) check the shadow before hiding in it.
    9) when doubling back, dont assume a cleared room is still clear.
    10) do not piss off the cleric.
    11) dont bait yourself, the wizard _will_ cast fireball on you if enough monsters surround you.
    12) *_do not piss off the cleric_*
    13) to hoard a potion is to waste a potion.
    14) assume the monster already knows you're coming.
    15) _never_ chase a creature into a new room. He's not fleeing, he's getting his friends.

@@kacpero02 we were tasked by a secret inquistion to infiltrate a museum and find an artifact that may be linked to an ancient evil they're trying to track down. While inside, the rogue scouted in the next room and saw a group of guards looking over a large open crate and immediently ducked into the shadow of a pillar to avoid detection. Unfortunately he didn't see what was also hiding in the dark corner behind him. Needless to say this was the moment we learned the artifact was a sarcaphogus, the guards were trying to figure out why it was open and empty, and our rogue learned the contents was right behind him and very pissed.

      @@SomeScruffian What about 5 and 7?

    • @SomeScruffian
      @SomeScruffian 2 ปีที่แล้ว +82

@@dragex6582 for 5, usually a monster who killed someone typically drag it away or eat it on the spot. If the corpse is intact with no signs of a triggered trap, it either means you interrupted a monster's soon to be meal and is nearby, or the fully intact body is a zombie/skeleton playing dead in order to get the jump on you. As for 7, a common DM tactic is to have an enemy out in the open as bait while other foe's are lying in wait for a dumb rogue to run in and get ganked.
One of my earliest runs involved a fully intact skeleton sprawled on the floor with a pristine sword next to it. The barbarian wanted the sword but wondered if it was an animated skeleton lying in wait. DM made him roll perception (dont remember what he rolled) and the DM said "the skeleton is completely motionless, but it's peculiarily absent of any dust or cobwebs.". The barbarian took it as a hint that the skeleton was a monster and ran in to attack it. DM says, "You run right into the gelatinous cube the skeleton was floating in. You are restrained and take 3d6 acid damage. Rest of you roll for initiative."

Addendum to rule 3: Mimics may stereotypically disguise themselves as chests, but good Mimics can be anything, even a whole cave. Be careful.

Fun thought: I had a dragonborn paladin in my campaign. Long story short, my party slew a basilisk, and my character loved trophy collecting so much, he cut the basilisk head all the way off and took it with him. Later used the enchanted head to turn a village bad guys into stone. Still not sure how I rolled 3 nat 20s for it.

Pro tip: When building a dungeon to house your vast treasures and loot, stick a couple of statues of scared adventurers around. That way, people will think there's a stony-gaze monster lurking around.

I never have been fooled by a mimic cause I always make sure to attack my chests before opening them, like a blunt strike from the front or a slice from the side, always starts an encounter if it's a mimic and I get the advantage

My general rules that I've learned is.
    1. Carry lots of rope and stakes
    2. Always have a good stick or cane to test for traps
    3. Always rest when you have the opportunity
    4. Never split up the party
    5. Never trust water or food within a dungeon
    6. Never just enter a room.

"dungeon cleaners don't exist." - If the floor is clean, most likely there is a blob or gelatinous cube going around.
"light steps are safe steps." - most traps activate with weight-based pressure plates. Always bring a halfling or elf to the party to scout for traps, because due to their lightweightedness, they won't activate anything.
"if there's a fence, there's a reason." - any time you see a blockade of any sort, such as a barricade or a line, no matter how frail it looks, it was put there for a reason, sometimes to keep something in instead of keeping people out.
"rats walk on the side of corridors, they never pass through the middle." - don't try to go into big rooms, those are where the big monsters are. Stick to confined spaces and tight corridors, because there you'll face weaker enemies.
"no one dies with health potions." - potions of poisoning have the same colour of Potions of Healing. Since potions of healing are all used during adventure, doubt any potion that you find on dead adventurers.
"the cake is fake." - sometimes the end of a dungeon, filled with some gold piles and trickets, is a trap to make adventurers think they reached the end and make them leave. If it was too easy, it most likely has more.

The statue rule is straight up terrifying, in death those people still serve one purpose, to warn others of the creature that was their demise, so that they might stand a chance.

Best thing to do for basilisks and madusas is have an artificer do some work on some goggles of night to essentially make them real night vision goggles and bravo six going dark. Since night vision goggles are an image of the object rather than looking directly at the beasts you don't get petrified(DM did force us to take a debuff to agility and speed as an offset but it helped make short work of the creatures. As for mimics, I used to carry what was basically a jeweler's hammer and give the backside where the hinges would be a good smack. Made for a good trap check
