    As an art student studying to be an illustrator/animator, I have to say that I understand when Glenn Keane is coming from. To me, when I design characters, I want to bring them to life, by giving them personalities through facial expressions, body language and bringing them to life in my head and this world. I want to give them so much life and personality that sometimes I put myself in their shoes and become them. I had to do this for a group project where we had to animate a small scene from a fairy tale and mine was 'Cinderella', I had to ask my housemates to leave the kitchen in a mess cause i want to see this from Cinderella's point of view and even record myself cleaning up. I love animation and art, so much. (Plus its the only thing I'm good at... shhhh).

    I was fortunate enough to be one of Glen's assistants back in the 1990s. Love this man; I owe an eternal debt of gratitude to him.

    It's cool that Disney got some 2D animators to help with 3D films like Tangled and Moana. I feel as though that's missing now from recent 3D Disney films.

      He was my boss in the 1990s, and he taught me the power of "drawing with heart".Best boss ever. Helped shape my career. His dad and kids were/ are wonderful too.
      Love you Glen. I'll always be in your debt.

    That ending spoke to me, really, actually made me cry. Just like Glen, I've always had a passion to see worlds beyond the canvas come to life, and thanks to him (and several others) they did. God, I wish I could go out and thank this man! He basically put to words what I've never been able to really grasp conceptually and made it so much easier to see. Thank you Glen, if ever you read this. Thank you so much!

    I’m a composer who loves animation but had no idea Glen Keane is Bil Keane’s son! So cool! The VR presentation at the end is very impressive as a developing technology, but I really enjoyed seeing the old school animation sketches at work. They’re so dynamic. Thank you for sharing this!

    As a writer I have always wanted to understand the mind of an artist. I thought that they were so different from me, but here in this video, I see little difference. We all try to reach into a magical world and bring it to life in pictures or words. The practice of the arts is a high calling and takes so much patience and self-belief. Glen Keane shows it very well.

    • @inkella3720
      @inkella3720 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, it was my life calling to write novels and I was so obsessed for years. But now I do nothing but draw, i dont want to write anymore. AND LOL the only difference is the medium

    • @Smoknw
      @Smoknw 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Sorry for my English but I’ve recognized as an artist that all arts are essentially the same. We are all grabbing from a common source to create. Which is why I can jump into other medium. They are all essentially from the same source art is created from, just expressed different ways.
      Glen keane when he is drawing, every decision counts. Every decision aids in how the character is portrayed. He animates from the heart. And pays close attention to details and the connection of life to his art, he understands the psychology of humans. He feels his work, and his heart is put into every frame of animation as if it was him. It shows.
      This is no different from a musician who mastered his craft. Again we are using feeling to guide in our decision making processes. But with different tools. You want your words emphasized?? You’ll create a softer backdrop of music, maybe pianos, or strings. The percussions are not too heavy. You want the words taking the center of the stage as a play. What does the chords make you feel? A sense of hope, sadness? Why you chose the chords? What is the feeling you get when these chords are put together.
      Same as a writer. A writer is skilled in using words to bring an image to life. They want the audience to experience what they are writing. The words are picked carefully, and the master of writing is able to bring whole life of meaning through only a handful of picked words. Some can make you supply you intense, thought provoking emotion with a sentence less than 8 words. They grab from life, they grab experience, and are able to look past the physical object and associate them to feeling, something we all can understand.
      A great artist always calls back to life, because everything that’s created from the artist are essentially rooted in life. Life is all we know. Nothing we create is new.
      I don’t think practicing art requires self belief, but the letting go of self. And the realization of the bigger picture. When we let go of self we are free of criticism, and we create from a space away from our worst critic; ourselves. Which unleashes creativity. We are able to create without associating the work to ourselves. When you let go of self you also find patience. And you are in a constant state of flow in whatever art you create. It’s a way of life.
      Glen keane himself said “ focus on the art instead of the artist” “ the better you are at what you do, the more it becomes about the hidden thing inside of you and you become invisible. It’s not about the glory its about touching other people”.
      I think artist should examine why they create art. If they do it outside of themselves, that’s when they find a whole new world of meaning to what they do and a whole new way of how they do it.

    Wow, Glen I hope you do someday the story of “the fountain of youth” because I think you must have found it. Your looking great! I hope you, Linda and Max are enjoying life to it’s fullest! Best regards your old SCUBA instructor Peter George. P.s I remember the day on Zuma beach that we were doing our beach dives when you saw a Asian girl sitting just looking out to sea and her hair was gently blowing in the wind . You told Max to run to your car and get your sketch pad and you drew her hair , and you said “ that’s Pocahontis’s hair!” At that time you were running into difficulty on what her hair should look like. Just something that stuck with me always. Wishing you all the best!

    The Little Mermaid makes me cry with the entirety of my SOUL to this very day. Even when I was little, something about her longing reached out into my very soul and pulled me with her into this shared longing of something MORE. It's the same with Belle. They touch that innate human emotion that yearns for adventure, love, and joy. This very longing is so engrained in my soul that I yearn to reach into the vast realm of the impossible and is why I became a writer and an artist. I hope to one day inspire these very same emotions my own audience and ignite that very same human longing for more.
