  • This was a huge decision to make, and I feel GREAT about what I chose to do. It was definitely years in the making, haha. So...enjoy my long winded explanation of why I decided that joining AEA at this time in my life was the correct career move for me. There are lots of pros and cons, but at this time the pros reallllly outweighed the cons. I'm excited for all that's coming up next and I can't wait to bring you all along the ride!

    You’re motivation is so inspiring to those of us who might be a little frightened of going after life goals!

    Hey! I’m in the same boat as you. Planning on joining Equity sometime in early 2024. I’m also almost thirty and totally relate to everything you said about the struggle to be seen, trying to maintain stamina, paying bills, etc. Best of luck to you! ❤

    omg instant subscribe! thank you for your honesty! as a fellow actor who has been in nyc and in her late 20's, it's so necessary that you have to pivot but can still pursue this as the bills increase :')

      Thank you for subscribing!! 🩷 and yes, it’s so true and I rarely see people openly discuss it and talk about the different choices we have to make in this career as we get older

    Congratulations! Welcome to the union!!! I agree with everything you said and you made the right decision!!! The being productive point is key and at a certain age and living and paying on your own it's #1 good luck and keep us posted on your auditions and how you are doing now as an official equity member

    Mel this is so exciting and I'm so happy for you for taking this step! I am a young actor who is going into college for MT next year and this is so inspiring and motivating for me. It put so much into perspective and I have been in love with your channel for a while now. Congratulations!!

    Thank you so much for giving me another perspective on why I should join Equity. I just paid my initiation fee yesterday and I'm so happy I did. Listening to you really gave me another burst of excitement on the new opportunities i'll have because i decided to join the union. As soon as the open access was announced, I told myself to join. But, I always stopped because of the money I would initially have to pay. But as you said, I'm in a different place in my career and I have to be an Equity Member. Hearing someone else's opinion on the benefits only reassures me I was making the right decision. This video really helped 😊

    Hey there Mel. Very interesting vlog for those of us not familiar with the acting world. Are there any annual fees or annual qualifications to keep your equity card?

    • @melcabeyvlogs
      @melcabeyvlogs  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! I had to pay $500 to join right now but I will owe the full amount (I think it’s something like $1800) by the year 2026. But there are also quarterly dues that I think are about it $80 or so? I’m not entirely sure yet 😂 but if you work equity contracts, you get a small amount taken out for your dues so you don’t always owe lump sums of money

    4:25 I’m familiar with equity vs non-equity tours but have never heard of mixed productions which are primarily non-equity but have a few equity roles. Is the goal to feature a few more experienced equity actors in a more amateur production? Doesn’t this create animosity between non-equity and equity actors?

    • @melcabeyvlogs
      @melcabeyvlogs  ปีที่แล้ว

      So basically, every single professional production you see (besides a Broadway show or Broadway Equity tour) will have a mix of union and non union actors. There are a very small handful of regional theatres that have full equity casts. That is because theatres around the country can’t afford to pay a full cast at the equity minimum, so they have non union contracts to be able to fill out a cast with their budget. But unless you are reading the playbill, you won’t be able to tell the different of who is equity and who isn’t. The talent amongst a professional cast is always top tier!

    Bravo!!! Make sure you audition for Telsey Casting and get to know Rachel Hoffman. She is great and will offer really good criticism and advice on your auditions.

    Can you still do cruise ships?

    • @melcabeyvlogs
      @melcabeyvlogs  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes!! That’s definitely a plus. Cruise ships can be equity or non equity, because it’s sort of international there’s no jurisdiction :)
