- "Lead, Kindly Light" was written by Cardinal Henry Newman in 1833, while he was still a member of the Church of England.
The tune is 'Sandon', written by Charles Henry Purday in 1860.
It is performed here by the choir of Wells Cathedral.

This hymn is a gem. The people who in darkness sat, have seen a marvelous Light. Despite the gloom, uncertainties, doubts, despair, "the dark night of the soul", a Lamp to our feet and a Light to our path is Christ the world's True Light.

Proper tune and version. My beloved late Father made me promise at the age of 7 when seated at the organ to play this version at his funeral. I was not ready to even think about that eventuality. When the time came, I was mortified to find that despite my instructions the "choir" had decided upon the "other" version. I had one job. No doubt I will reconcile this with my Dad.
I understand this. Something of the kind happened to me. Years later, I reasoned loving parents love unconditionally with abundant kindness. Anchor yourself to this thought and liberate yourself. Blessings sent. ❤

A gorgeous rendition of Newman's much loved hymn. If listeners to this video don't already know it, search out Arthur Sullivan's truly beautiful setting of these words. Maybe more of a part-song in its style, it is nevertheless most sensitive and moving. Feel free to disagree of course, but to (mis)quote psalm 139 'search it out and know it'!!
