Lo, He Comes With Clouds Descending (Tune: Helmsley - 4vv) [with lyrics for congregations]

  • "Lo, He Comes With Clouds Descending" was written by Charles Wesley in 1758.
    The tune is 'Helmsley'. Its composer is uncertain. John Wesley attributed it to Thomas Olivers but Olivers is said to have heard the tune on the street somewhere. Since the first line resembles a tune by violinist and composer Thomas Augustine Arne some have suggested that it was composed by Arne. However, it most probably came from Martin Madan's 'Collection of Psalms and Hymn Tunes Sung at the Chapel of Lock Hospital', where he was chaplain.
    It is performed by St Michael's Singers, Coventry Cathedral.

      @@ChetValleyChurches But he or she is right you know. The descant the Sopranos did at the last verse was too low key. I'm a soprano singer, so I know. My choir does this hymn every year during advent and I was humming the descant just now, so I decide to see if any choir did it when I found your video. I wouldn't say I'm disapointed though, but the descant they did is not very powerful

    Found a similar version in my hymnbook. This is a particularly beautiful rendition!
    Lo! He comes, from heaven descending,
    Once for favored sinners slain!
    Thousand thousand saints attending
    Swell the triumph of His train!
    Hallelujah!
    Jesus comes and comes to reign!
    See the Savior, long expected
    Now in solemn pomp appear!
    And His saints, by man rejected,
    All His heavenly glory share:
    Hallelujah!
    See the Son of God appear!
    Lo! the tokens of His passion,
    Though in glory, still He bears;
    Cause of endless exultation
    To His ransomed worshippers;
    Hallelujah!
    Christ, the Lamb of God, appears.
    Israel’s race shall now behold Him
    Full of grace and majesty;
    Though they set at naught and sold Him,
    Pierced and nailed Him to the tree,
    Now in glory
    Shall their great Messiah see.
    ’Tis Thy heavenly bride and Spirit,
    Jesus, Lord! that bid Thee come;
    All the glory to inherit,
    And to take Thy people home.
    All creation
    Travails, groans, till Thou shalt come.
    Yea, Amen, let all adore Thee,
    High on Thine exalted throne:
    Savior, take the power and glory;
    Claim the kingdoms for Thine own:
    Come, Lord Jesus!
    Hallelujah! come, Lord, come!

      Verse 3 is problematic, too easily taken as a blood libel trope. "Let's ignore that the Roman Empire killed Christ--Let's blame the Jews!" That has been the sad excuse for every pogrom, for the Holocaust. Nope.

    • @switzerlandful
      @switzerlandful 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@michaelearendil6843 I partly agree with you. I don't think its accurate or fair to say the Jews killed or crucified Jesus. Most had nothing to do with it (from what I understand). It was a certain number of the Jewish religious authorities who pushed for it to happen... and the Roman authorities allowed or authorized it due to the uproar from some of the people and religious authorities.

      We are all responsible as He died for us all. The verse in ‘How deep the Fathers love for us’ says
      Behold the man upon a cross,
      My sin upon His shoulders;
      Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice
      Call out among the scoffers.
      It was my sin that held Him there
      Until it was accomplished;
      His dying breath has brought me life -
      I know that it is finished.

    • @switzerlandful
      @switzerlandful 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@michaelearendil6843 Ya I probably should be careful in the future. Yes, it was the Romans who did it at the request of a certain number of civilians and religious authorities. The idea of blaming them all doesn't make much sense since many Jews had nothing to do with it and its almost 2 millennia ago.

    • @switzerlandful
      @switzerlandful 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@suejudd9801 Ya, that is something I tend to not think about. It was Jesus' love for us and the righteous will to correct the "sin" problem that made him allow himself to be taken and crucified. And even then, Jesus gave up His own life. No one took it from Him.

    Hello anyone - is it legal to use this on zoom for our church. We have all the CCLI licences?

    • @ChetValleyChurches
      @ChetValleyChurches  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Liz, copyright on the internet is a murky area and we are not lawyers so cannot be definitive. However, it is our understanding that the MCPS does not enforce copyright for music being played during worship. If you have all the CCLI licences (including the livestreaming one?) then we think that you should be fine using our hymns and songs. Lots of other churches are doing so, both in UK and across the world.

      @@a.t.c.3862 It is a shame that you are unhappy with the final verse. As a former teacher of hymn playing, I did my best to ensure that my students didn't "show off" in the final verse and taught that the organ is there to accompany and, if possible, underline the text. Some organists do this brilliantly, some do not. The recording here I feel does enhance the text of the last verse with an excellent descant and playing that lifts the hymn to another dimension. Did you also notice that it is in Ab? That too enhances the whole hymn. Alas, when there is just congregational singing, it is normally sung in G, which also suits the hymn and is easier for the lesser trained to sing. It will be sung tomorrow at Chedgrave (28.11.2021.). I will be playing and promise that there will not be a rearrangement of the last verse. Come and talk to me about it after the service.

      @@a.t.c.3862 Its a good descant which many hymns around this time of year have. Means that the choir can show their full range with the trebles reaching those places that few others can. Don't know your tradition but do you have a SATB choir at your church that sing in harmony?
