Their music has evolved significantly since the '80s. It has become much darker and less poppy. If you want to check out songs since 2000 that harken back to the '80s stuff you should look at "Suffer Well", "Precious", and "Soothe My Soul", Although, there are some slow classics among the new stuff as well.
I agree. The DM Violator is a carrer point. After it's darker, less dancy, something different. I still like the sound, don't care about the video (in disco or in your car u have none so...). They wanna send messages, more impact for that ? Ok. Always looking for new sounds ? Ok. But they grew up, the music too, their fans too. So it's less popy, less "disco" (why not), and i stiil 80's to mid 90's DM supporter. I understand why they are so popular and i agrre with that, they still genious. Most of the time they are good but their mood untill mid 90's is not for me. Not a bad song but not for me. Anyway it's a powerfull one. A good choice even this tune is not my taste.
I love the symbolism of this video. I've always seen it as the director's comment about life... the masked man is "born" in the beginning, and is careening through life out of control... his hands are tied and he is fated to a miserable existence. Right as he frees himself at the end, he dies... lol. DM love dark humor and the song is a bit of "piss taking" about negative people.
Derek, have you ever reacted to „Only when I lose myself“ of Depeche? Came out in 1998 and is absolutely amazing. A MUST reaction! „Wrong“ is actually really good and by most fans considered to be amongst their strongest singles. There is a lot to say about some of their more recent albums, but Wrong is pretty indisputable, and - very fortunately - their latest album „Memento Mori“ with its single „Ghosts Again“ is a true return to old strength.
This song is about heroin. The car journey is the life of the addict. It's like going backwards down hill helplessly, hurting people along the way. Then you die. Usually.
Without wishing to sound too fanatical - I have total respect for Dereck once again! As a fan of Depeche - my #1 band - for 30+ years, I totally agree with this review. They set incredibly high standards from the very start in the brutally-compelling 1980s, and understandably face a lot of criticism today in the vacuum of time. I also agree with Steven Kendall's suggestions of other 21st century Mode songs. Mine would be 'Nothing's Impossible', but there are many.
Hello Dereck, the video to watch and the music in the Background It's scared me.But at the same time is it realy good. But the video takes for me the whole place.Thank you Dereck for your reaction💝💝🐬🐬
Turn off the video and listen to the song again. It actually might take take a couple of times but I garantee it will become one of your favorite songs. Most of their songs sink in with time, at least in my case
Cool beat, it's very uplifting music- it's got a type of build up, idk about the words- and i just heard your first pause. Driving the wrong way😮 chainsaw massacre🙆🏼♀️🙅🚫 Im glad i didn't see the video, hahaha You just said, "OMG that was scary!"😅 I like your opinion, and agree with it
Sound meant a lot to them back until 1995... these days they don't care that much anymore, however this is a great track where it finally worked again. For me the album "Sounds of the universe" (which this song is from) is not listenable, because the sound sounds very immature and "demo version"-like. WRONG and a track called IN SYMPATHY are the only good tracks from that album for me :)...
Hey, hi!! You should listen to music from French-speaking culture. I know you've already done it, but here it is... listen to Enrico Macias - "Le Mendiant de l'Amour
My favourite song from Depeche Mode ! ❤ Masterpiece ❤❤❤ Must see on live performance !

You should react to the whole album Memento Mori, it's for me a return to form album that has a lot of throwbacks to previous albums.
And hopefully some great remixes in the near future too. Their best album in 18 years, I believe...
@@EmpressTouch their best in 30 years in my opinion😉
@@violator906 without a doubt
first time i saw this on tv when I was a teenager I CRIED I was so traumatized lmao
This song means a lot to me, as it basically describes my constant feeling during school and apprenticeship.
Side mission: Count the "Wrong"s xD
LOL, I did one time years ago... I believe the number was 73!?
@@condemned1982 On the Spotify lyrics I count 69 (nice), but I could have miscounted.
this song was apart of the Metal Gear Rising Revengence ad Campiahn I first listened to it.
The sounds of " leave in silence " ( 1982 ) or blasphemous rumours ( 1984 ) of Depeche Mode is soooooo goood and always good in 2023 ...: thanks DM
How did this video get nominated for a VMA and lose out to Black Eyed Peas, “Boom Boom Pow?”
