I am a musician and sound engineer who recently suffered SSNHL in my right ear, and my world has been shattered. I now rely solely on a hearing aid in my left ear to navigate my life's soundtrack. This is truly the first encouragement I've had that I may be able to enjoy music again! Thank you :)
I don't find it surprising that someone who is implanted coming from a 'normal' hearing background is able to adapt quicker to the CI. I myself have used hearing aids my whole life with profound hearing loss. I was implanted over a year ago now and I feel as though my progress so far has been very slow. I feel like I'm pushing through and leveling out an imbalance of sound from both sides, with the right (implanted) side now overpowering the left side (hearing aid). Admittedly I could be doing a lot more to practice but it is nice to hear encouraging words from Johanna and Roy. I know my path will be different and to reach the level of hearing that Roy describes: "like Dorothy stepping into Oz" I understand will be a lot slower for me to realise, but it will be a dream come true.

Curious to know if CI improves and/or can generally eliminate difficulty hearing masked speech.
