I have Treacher Collins Syndrome & currently, my loss is severe-profound but speech understanding is 92% (although I'm not sure how since I feel like my hearing understanding is declining so much!) I want to say sincere thank you! I watched this before my CI qualification and it addressed a lot of my worries. I rewatched after surgery to remind myself nuances.
Excellent discussion, answered so many questions! I am going for my first appointment with the surgeon on Monday. Have been wearing hearing aids for decades, due to otosclerosis, and am now on the most powerful aid available. My hearing rapidly declined after getting a severe ear infection. I really had no knowledge of what the process was like, and this video was so very informative! Thank you very much! I'm now even more excited about getting the implant!

Hi... I'm curious to know how things worked out for you? Did you have the procedure done? My Dad is 89 and considering having one implant done after years of trying many of the various models of hearing aids ove the years. He is doing his research now to decide if it is a good thing for him to do. Would you recommend it for someone his age? Thanks...
@@brucekevin8472 i am 64 and it went great. I used hearing aids thirty yrs (prior to CI in right ear only) and still use one hearing aid in left ear. It works best if one works every day on understanding the electrical output. In my experience, the more work put in results in better comprehension.

I do understand that it does take some time to 'retrain your brain' to connect and recognize the sounds. Looks like you're on a great path of regaining what you had struggled with for so many years. My hearing is normal. I stumbled upon this as fascinating. My point is the doctor said basically 'there have been significant major improvements in this field in the last fifteen years'. This in my opinion was an immediate and quantifiable result of people using the internet, the world wide web, the self study revolutionary phenomenon of being online. The gathering of tens of thousands of people with similar interests has led to concrete gains, and I expect this knowledge flood to snowball as people become focused rather than scattered. In laymans terms, you ain't seen nothing yet.

Very excited, feels like Christmas is coming, but also very nervous!

@@crazytvwatcher-bg5zk hi 👋 all went well! He stayed over night as he had a bit of a bleed but walked out of there with a stick we gave him just in case he felt a bit unsteady on his feet! Healed really well, placement on xray is spot on and next Monday he is having his switch on and first tuning. Super nervous for that cos this is the has it worked bit 😬 Dad had barely any hearing so he said its a risk worth taking! next plan was hearing dog and lots of flashing things!! I hope all goes for guys xx
@@rosec7008 Thanks for the quick response. Glad to hear it went well! I heard it does take some time to get used to the sounds from the implant and I'm sure your dad will do great with it! It's comforting to know that the actual surgery went well.
@@crazytvwatcher-bg5zk I was just adding his appointments to my calendar when your message came through 🤣 sooo many appointments 🤣 he had the surgery at addenbrookes in Cambridge, quite the drive I must say but getting very used to it now! They really are very very good down there and certainly know there stuff! X
@@crazytvwatcher-bg5zk just wanted to let you know he had it turned on on the 11th July. Understood everything that was said! Weve been having normal conversations, back chat and everything and hes definitely back in the world of the hearing!!!! Its being fine tuned over the next few months but he can hear and understand the TV, radio, mum, his kids, grandkids.....everyone and everything! He says it's not robotic, somethings are slightly mono tone but that will be sorted with the tuning! It's absolutely the most amazing this ever and I hope so much everything goes as well for you guys!!!!! xx

I had my cochlear implant surgery Nucleus 8 on February 2023 “Successfully”. I can’t seem to get a correct answer regarding dental care. Example dental implant and laser dental work. My questions is are any restrictions for dental work. Can I get a correct answer from someone.
What happens if you get a cochlear implant and 3-5 years later a new cochlear processor implant comes out that is far superior with 50 channels. Do you have surgery and have old removed and put the new superior one in?
From what I have read they are trying to design the o they will be as interchangeable with new tech as possible. Something to do with the virtual channelling, but I am no expert
@@dukeoutlandish358 Advanced Bionics uses 120 virtual channels. The other manufacturers (Cochlear America and MedEl do not use virtual channels.) I don't know anyone with AB (Advanced Bionics) implants that hears better than the other brands of implants that do not have virtual channels.
I’m a professional violinist and violin teacher. Covid cooked my hearing. I’m wearing Phonaks because they seem to be best for speech AND acoustic music. How are these implants for acoustic musicians? Could I still wear a phonak in my left ear by my violin and the implant in the other?

Yes, you would need to have the external and the implanted part changed.

Yes! Advanced Bionics and Phonak are partners.
Yes, my hubby will be doing that exactly. 1 cochlear, and 1 hearing aid that are compatible working together. Brands are Cochlear America and Resound.
