    I sold my D6 to buy a Z9 after using the Z9 sold the Z9 and purchase a another D6 ;) and sold the Z9 haha I also have D5 and Hasselblad H6D no more Z9 for me thanks ( not that great in low lighting )

      That sounds like an expensive buy and sell ;)
      The D6 is absolutely phenomenal in low light. It really impressed me. My absolute favourite things about the Z9 when compared to the D6 are the 45 megapixel sensor, the fps, the eye detection AF and the silent shutter. You can see what I loved here: th-cam.com/video/WDdY22ZYR7U/w-d-xo.html
      That being said, the D6 is still a brilliant camera. My perfect world includes a D6 and a Z9. Heck, I still use an F6 film camera!

    I know this is an old video, but in case you still get alert of these comments. at around 5:00, you show a basket player and the d6 shotting away. you did not se 3d tracking, right? it seems you used single point focus and just move the camera instead of letting the camera find the player, did I understand the video correctly? I am experimenting with my D6 and I am still not settled what is the best when trying to track my kids running. Should I do 3d tracking or just single point or dynamic area type of thing?

    • @thephotographytoolkit
      @thephotographytoolkit  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for the question Daniel. To be totally honest, I don't remember. Usually with moving subjects, I will use my thumb on the back AF button which is set up for dynamic autofocus. But it is totally possible I didn't in this case. The hardest thing is was trying to hold my iphone up to the viewfinder to record the video as I was also moving the D6. So maybe I was just pressing the shutter release button.
      Well spotted by the way!

      I love astrophotography too but as I am currently living in Singapore there is way too much light pollution to capture great shots. I have to wait until I go back to Canada for holidays and then I can capture some images. I like the 14-24mm and the 16mm fisheye for astrophotography. What type of gear do you use?

    Hi David, congratulations on getting your hands on the D6, I would love to own one, once its price for a second-hand mint copy goes down to the ~3000 USD range! I still prefer the optical viewfinder (have tried all mirrorless viewfinder from Nikon, Canon, and Sony, but is unsatisfied with any of them, in terms of providing an enjoyable experience when shooting, I hope I can get my hands on the Z9 and see if its 'real-live' viewfinder is good-enough for me, my eyes get tired really fast when looking at the tiny tv viewfinder screens of any mirrorless cameras), and is not interested to upgrade to the Z9 for a whole host of reasons (namely cost, lenses, storage, battery life, laptop upgrade for processing 45mp images etc). My current workhorse is the D4, and would like to ask you a 3 questions on the D6.
    1. Can the burst mode and autofocus mode be set to link with the menu bank system on the D6? Currently on the D4, burst mode and autofocus mode must be changed manually through the physical dials, and they cannot be linked with a particular bank. I am asking this because I have bank A set for landscape and bank B set for sports, but after changing the menu bank from A to B, I still have to change the burst mode dial from S to CH manually, and Autofocus mode from Auto-Area to 3D-tracking manually (what I prefer for sports). This is literally a 'pain in the ass' for me, and has made me missed 'emergency shots' in the past, may I know has Nikon fixed this issue in the D6?
    2. How does the auto white balance accuracy of the D6 compare to the D4? My D4, as with all other Nikon DSLRs in 2012 (namely D800 & D600), are all notorious for their 'green-tint' problem. What I have done on my D4 to combat this, is to set the Auto White Balance to AUTO1, B1M2. Generally, once set this way, and as long as you're not using a flash, the D4's auto white balance is incredibly accurate and precise, in terms of delivering a 'pleasing & natural' white balance to my eyes. However, when using a flash, this setting makes the photos look noticeably 'pink' / magenta biased. I understand that Nikon has made quite a drastic change on their auto white balance in their DSLRs since 2014, including the D4S that you own. Having said that, may I know what do you think of the auto white balance of the D6, when compared to your D850 & D4S, and especially when set to the AUTO0 (keep white color) mode?
    3. On the topic of high ISO, it's interesting to see that the Z9's native ISO goes up to 25600, but the D6's goes up to 102400. From my 11-year (though entirely amateur) experience of shooting Nikons, once you're out of the native ISO range, the camera will cease applying 1. Active D-Lighting and 2. Picture Control to the photos, and the amount of color noise will increase tremendously for every stop of ISO from there on. So in my opinion, perhaps the D6 might still hold the crown for ultra low light situations, when compared to the Z9. In Steve Perry's D6 review, he stated that the noise pattern of D5 & D6 are mostly similar, but the D6 is able to grab and maintain color at high ISOs (namely 25600-102400 range) better than the D5. May I ask how does the D6's high ISO performance compare to your D4S, in-terms of maintaining natural-looking color, and suppressing color noise in mid-tones and shadows in >12800 ISOs?
    Many thanks for the reading my long questions, I must say that reviews of the Nikon D6 are few and scarce on TH-cam! Happy shooting your D6!

    • @thephotographytoolkit
      @thephotographytoolkit  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks so much for the in depth comment and for your questions. I will start off by saying that I borrowed the D6 so I don’t have it with me anymore but I will try to answer your questions and get my hands on it again to get more information. I completely agree with you - if a second hand mint D6 came up for around $3000, I would snap it up. I was impressed with the Z9’s viewfinder but I also prefer the optical viewfinder compared to the digital viewfinder. I’ll do my best to answer your questions. 1. The burst mode is still a physical dial and can’t be connected to a menu bank. In terms of the autofocus modes, they can be connected to a custom menu bank so that is good for your style of shooting. That being said, I found assigning different buttons the best way to quickly change autofocus modes. I used the shutter release button for single point autofocus mode. I used the AF-On button for 9 point autofocus when the single point wasn’t enough. If there was something that was moving quickly, I simply used the subselector button. I really wish I could set my D4S up this way because it totally changed the way I could quickly change between autofocus modes. I set up my D500 this way and I love it. 2. I didn’t have any problems with the Auto White Balance (which I used the whole time). I didn’t specifically test the Auto White Balance side by side with the D850 and the D4S other than the results from the high ISO test. That is probably the best I have in terms of side by side colours. 3. When I was able to try the Z9 in the Nikon store, one of the people who worked there that I spoke to said that the high ISO outside the native ISO range was amazing and similar to the D6 but I wasn’t able to test it. I have uploaded some side by side samples from the D6 and the D4S so you can see them here: tinyurl.com/D6vsD4SISO
      I hope that helps. Thanks again for your comment!

      Tell me more. Do you mean buying it now is a waste or has it always been a waste in your opinion?
      I think when it was released in early 2020 it was Nikon's best professional camera for action, high FPS and low ISO performance. After the Z9 got released almost 2 years later, I would definitely choose the Z9 over the D6 for the AF and FPS. However, the D6 still has the best low light performance of any of Nikon's cameras.
