NZer here. In 1996 while driving around Britain I ran across a Heavy Horse Day near Cambridge. The side stalls included someone operating a pole lathe. I was very impressed at the utility of the process, Never forgotten, it's why I clicked on this. I later learned the origin of the term "bodged".
I seriously appreciate the skill and hardwork displayed by this humble artisan. Using simple tools to make household items can be tedious and rather difficult. But the end product is a beauty to behold.

The lathe is my favorite tool of all. I never saw anything like this though. I lived in Germany and toured there for 9 years and missed this. Wish I could have seen it first hand.
Amazing wood working and with todays technology would have been done quickly but to watch someone use old school equipment I’m just blown away at the craftsmanship a lot time patience you sir are a true artist thank you for sharing your work and talent 👍

Not really a ‘pole lathe’ as he was using bungee cord for his power source instead of a springy pole as is traditional, but a good couple of well made bowls nevertheless. Incidentally, I wonder if he made his own clogs?

And people wonder how Egyptians did those funky stone bowls and carved and polished stone and such. I suspect they had elaborate wood tools just like this guy
Could even engineer the pulley to be less muscle intensive with a bigger log, and possibly make a good sized mug if the larger bowl could've been an inch bigger. Great work!
Ansich ja gut gemacht und auch fast altes Handwerk wenn da nicht die ganzen "neuen Bauteile" an der Wippbank wären Gummibänder, Gewindestangen, Unterlegscheiben und Muttern. Mann hätte da mit Umlenkrollen aus Holz und einem Gegengewicht arbeiten können. Aber von der Verarbeitung her super👍

This is a handy video. I was wondering how someone would be able to operate a lathe after the electric grid crashes because EVERYTHING was turned electric and the grid can't handle it. I figured some operations would have to rely on waterwheels, but what if you aren't near a suitable water source.

I would rather have wooden bowl, plates, cups, etc. than plastic.
I really like the idea of using the center cone for a smaller bowl instead of just a large pile of of shavings. Well done.
