I’ve always enjoyed your vlog videos when you do pro sports. Gives some neat insight behind the scenes where many of us do not go. Love this video even more as it speaks to so many of us who shoot youth sports. Would definitely love to see more videos like this. Couple of questions: 1) curious why f5.6 for the 70-200? 2) besides monopod, cameras, and lenses what types of accessories do you find helpful to being on a sports shoot? Anything besides the obvious things like batteries, card reader, etc?
was hoping to see some backend/software tips. honestly think this is where most youth sport photogs stuggle/fail, be cool to see a follow-up video on media managment & delivery. i know i'm always looking to improve things in this regard, even if it's the smallest of details, every bit helps when taking on youth sports and making the juice worth the squeeze!
You take great photos, I’m just starting out with photography and I photographed my son’s football games and watching your videos gives me good knowledge of how to operate a digital camera I appreciate the videos you post here thank you keep up the good work
Know what you were talking about that cold I started shooting at 10 and had a biting wind off the sea . Ahhhhhhhh the joys of u13 football but at least it was sunny.
where you think best place to sit for football as am just starting in football none leauge our local reserves team not had very good reults so far yours look fantastic
Hi Rob, Great video! I am looking for a new monopod that will work well for my r6 and 300 lens. Are you using the one you recommend in your notes in this video? I'd like to try a twist lock this time. I shoot equine sports. Also do you have a favorite portable drive you like? I fill them up quickly with show images. Thanks for all you share. Love your videos!
Hi Rob, the R6 is on the way to me to replace the 1D MKIV. I also have a 1Dx MKII. Why do you use the R6 as your main camera during games over the 1Dx?
I use 1DX1 with my 70-200 f/2.8 and 300mm f4L on 6D1. I see no problem in in Robs combination. I do indoor sports. Plan to get 2 x R6 with RF 70-200 f/2.8 and a EF 300mm f/2.8. This Saturday I shoot national league handball in a large arena with 1000 LUX - even my f4 keeps up in this light :P
local lower level rugby clubs close to me all have a policy to cover photographing youth and children in games and you need to obtain permission. Not sure if they also insist on a CRB check (or whatever it is called now). Always a good idea to have public liability insurance when photographing sports as well.
In the United States, minors or anyone else, are not protected from photography in public provided its not for commercial purposes. Say I took a photograph of your child and the a logo is in the shot. If the logos owner wants to buy the photo for advertising then it depends if any person can be identified in the shot, if yes, I'd need a model release. If it's the hands of the player on the ball but a reasonable person couldn't say that's (name)..then no release is needed. Even the back of a jersey with the person's last name is seen but not (typically) the face, no release is needed. Shooting for a news report, story, or other editorial purposes, no release is required. These have been secured under the 1st amendment to the Constitution of the United States freedom of speech, press etc.
Really interesting to see how other photographers shoot sports. Football is especially frustrating because goals are the hardest part to capture well, so I now use a remote behind the goal in the hope of getting lucky.
Hi Rob. Im new to sport Photography, what are your thoughts about using the sigma 150-600 non sport lens for shooting outside games? I just picked up the R6. But can’t afford the new RF lens.
That one is a simple folding one from Amazon. I used a Minimax stool a lot bit if I'm parked right by the field and I know it might be a bit muddy I sometimes pull this one out of the back of the car
@@RobSambles Thank you for that info. So I have been reading reviews about the Mini Max ion the B&H web site and several people have said theirs broke. B&H sells the original made in Israel model (not the knockoffs you may find on other sites, and I recall in your video about stools you said you had the original one. I am planning to try one of the folding 16 inch models similar to what you used in this video but am interested in knowing how your Mini Max is holding up? Thanks in advance from the other side of The Pond.
It was MINUTES into the video when we found out that your "youth sports" is boys soccer (or football as you say) I shoot girls volleyball, and dance competitions. While I appreciate your video, your tips didn't really touch on the techniques and advice I would need for this

If im not mistaken, using f5.6 keeps more of the players in focus compared to f2.8
I'm just starting to photograph my son and daughter's games..........found this very helpful - thanks!

Always a joy to watch, Rob. Thanks very much.

It would be great if you could do an updated video on photographing basketball.
That was very interesting watch Rob...........excellent photos...........stay safe.........thanks for sharing

Keep watching my videos man, loads of tips on that in my channel
Please could you show the individual photo settings on screen it would be a great help
Great vlog style video! Great photos.
Cold and snow is even worse than light rain. It's cold and wet! But torrential downpour is definitely the worst situation.
The 1DXiii does have a silent mode using the electronic shutter.
Loving this channel!!
The ball looks very sharp. What shutter speed do you normally use? Do you set it higher for capturing headers, where the ball is coming in fast?

Hi Keli. They don't seem to sell the exact one I have any more but the one in the video description there is the closest one
I feel your pain Rob! I was shooting youth rugby down in Havant near the south coast and my trigger finger went into polar spasm!!
Nice work mate.

Did you always use landcape orientation ?
Great information
Rob, thanks for the video. I'm starting photographing my daughter's rugby. Do you ever use a filter / polarizing filter during sports photos?
I find photographing the little ones playing sports is less stressful than shooting the adults…
Enjoyed the video but what was the final score?
what monopod are you using?
congrats
Great video Rob. When it comes to photographing youth sports do you gain parental permission for taking photos of under 16 year olds?

My advice would be approach the club and discuss this.

I've been using that one for about half a year now, it's a bit hefty but it performs well for me
What you can do is get the EF-100-400mm and save a few bucks.
would you recommend going to your local clubs and taking photos and would you have to ask for permission?
For youth sports yes you would definitely want to obtain permission first
@@RobSambles what about senior levels of sport that’s re still local
@@mctutlenugget5123 I would always ask someone out of courtesy
@@RobSambles yes that is very true thank you for replying!!!
What portable seat do you use?
I was going to ask the same thing, I thought you use to use a mini max but it looked different in this video.
