would it be possible for you to tell me where the "MANHOLE" is and how to get there? I know I am asking for a spot burn, but will not bring anyone there and won't tell anyone where it is. You said it was a public spot. I have never fished for salmon in CT and would like to save some time searching, adding time to actually fishing. Thanks for any help and happy new year!
Very briefly worked on the restoration project. When the program started there was and still is a residual native population of Atlantic salmon. The first year of counting before any of the hatchery fish would be returning was one of the highest counts. That number stood for years. The hardest part for this species is navigating unprecedented human based conditions. Once they reach the estuaries it's a whole new game. I would like to believe conditions are improving.

I'm from east haven ct, and was wondering what rivers to try. I know they say the Naugatuck, the salmon river, parts of the connecticut river, but I was hopin you can give me the real run down and best lures or flies.
Hey Anthony, I'm glad you asked. There are 2 rivers stocked with the Brood stock Atlantic Salmon and they are the Naugatuck and the Shetucket. Although there are a few Salmon that venture up the CT. and Salmon Rivers it's not a fish-able population. For lures, you can use them but they must have a single free swinging hook and no added weight on line. I stick with spoons and spinners most are 1/4 oz, sometimes 1/16 or 1/2 oz. The Dare Devil, Thomas Buoyant and KastMaster Lures, the Rainbow trout color has worked good for me. As far as Flies go the hottest fly is an Olive color Wooly Bugger. If you catch one in a tributary of the CT, that's great but they have to be returned to the water immediately. You won't catch a Kokanee on a fly rod. Good luck!
Soon!!!! It's Seasonal they stock in the Fall, you can fish all Winter until Feb, then it opens again in April with the Trout season. I catch the most soon after they stock but many are caught by Trout fisherman in April and May. The Deep has stocking reports that you can view online. For spinning just use a lure with a single free swinging hook. (Thomas Buoyant) Is my favorite. In April you can use treble hook lures and keep the Salmon if you like. Thanks for asking! I grew up around the Naugatuck River and remember when it was really nasty and I am only 37. I still don't trust fish from the river to eat, but since they are out to sea most of their lives do you think they are fine or there is a point they are better up north CT where the river wasn't as polluted? Or do CT Salmon species spend larger parts of their lives in the rivers and get more contaminated? Just a heads up if you are filming with the waterproof housing on you gotta speak a good bit louder or mic up to make it easier to hear you without us having to jack up the volume. Nice to see some CT specific videos. I moved from Bethlehem to North Haven recently and don't know the local fresh water other than the Quinnipiac which I consider brackish where I live. Lots of blues and stripers and there is a pretty big tide surge that can raise the river 3 or more feet. So, I mostly fish the ocean and got a big foot pedal kayak to try this year.
Well they are hatchery raised and realeased into river so they may have less contamination, it's hard to say. I was going to keep one to eat but never caught one in December when you can take one home. I would love the area where you fish, I'm a salt water angler as well. Thanks for making the video BOF. I got a Hobie Pro Angler 14 in December so I haven't used it other than one time before I knew how to release the rudder. It is a pedal kayak(plus can paddle) so it should make fishing much easier with two free hands. Getting excited as the weather turns and prepping to make some mods. What do you normally target when in salt water? I am expanding to squid, sand fleas, crabbing, clams, mussels, oysters, lobster, pretty much anything I can try my hand at this year and the kayak will help with a lot of that.
I'll never eat anything out of that river unless its further north, up past Watertown. Just this past fall the Waterbury Sewage plant accidentally released 5 million + gallons of raw sewage into the river. It took almost 2 weeks before anyone even knew about it and even then the public was hardly notified. The river is much cleaner now than it used to be but I can't imagine the amount of things still in there that we don't hear about.
