Our Story:
We are Carissa, Iwan & Frankie the sausage dog, and in 2020 decided one night over a bottle of wine that moving from North Wales to Portugal would be a good idea. Within a month we were on the road to Portugal to find the perfect piece of land to call home. We picked up Albi, Joao and Simao the cats along the way, as well as Diogo the podengo and a flock of chickens.
Subscribe to follow our project as we turn an old stone barn into our home, and learn the ropes of looking after a piece of land to make an abundant garden and one day, our very own winery.

So relieved you have not been affected by these horrendous fires, my heart goes out to those who lost family, livestock, homes and businesses and yes a big thank you to bombeiros and all the firefighters including villagers who fought those fires with any means they could as bombeiros could not physically be everywhere at the height of the fires 🥺 and also thank you to the countries who sent in help and aid ❤

The paint job has dried beautifully. It's almost a stucco color in the sun. Perfect for the geography.
If you leave gaps in your pallet build, dollars to donuts, someone with 3 inch heels will slip into the crack and break an ankle!
If your wood is warped, soak it in water, screw them in bow side down and let the dry in the sun. Most will straighten out.
I love a nice pergola. Sail cloth or clear plastic sheeting will keep you shaded and/or dry.
I admire how your saving trees by recycling. Your animals are all happy because you make them feel safe. I'm praying for your safety from the fires. Your art is so beautiful and I'm excited about your book.

Look at the end of the board (cupping) trees are round, they have rings, it is called crown side up to have the cupping on the bottom, water won't be sitting on the wood in a puddle.
I am very conscious of how more confident and competent you both are with power tools, since I have been following you. The little house is looking good.

When we have fires around us in the bush and close to town the sky is a brilliant pink/red/purple like colours and with the sun behind it, it is spectacular to see but the fires are not good for the people effected.
Your deck is going to be great. Amazed what can be done with pellets. Used here for camping out firewood mostly.

I love the art for the book! I also like the title "Frankie and her socks" much better than "Sausage and her socks", I think it not only sounds better but helps create instant familiarity, even with people who haven't heard of Frankie yet.

You mentioned the Canadaire water bomber, a new factory east of Calgary Alberta is in the process of beginning to build new water bombers the same as existing well known fire fighting bombers. But it will be a few years before the first leave the assembly line.

Carissa, if you have a small orbital sander, you may find that it is easier to use in the small spots and save the belt sander for the long runs with the grain. All looks lovely oiled up.

Thankfully you are not in the fire zone this year.. it’s very unsettling as you say. (We have the same issues here in Oz , and this summer is forecast to be bad)

I’ve worried about and prayed for your safety, after hearing of the wildfires in Portugal. So relieved to hear you guys are OK! Here in Canada,our climate is changing rapidly, and huge wildfires have become the norm every summer. I live in the northern part of my province, and it gets hotter and drier every year, with more electrical storms and dry lightning. Perfect conditions for a wildfire. ❤️

The square sander is a finish sander, the circular and mouse sanders are better at removing rough wood. The belt sander is your best bet, except for wood without nails a power planer is the best. Again a pleasant channel😊🇨🇦👍👍

I read that 5 of the fires were started by a 33 year old women, she has been arrested and is awaiting trial.
Last year some fires were started by a fire fighter. How crazy is that?
There have been a number of arrests already. It’s quite an alarming statistic that over 95% of the fires here are started by humans.
I lived in France, many many fires, most were arson one by a begrudged fireman or carelessness. 😢

Hello be careful the ants Will eat the walls foam insulation and nets protect it some way...and the roof ends foam its bernd with the sun you can paint it to prevent thats what i did with mine ❤

I did try that, unfortunately gravity was also encouraging the whole pallet to fall over and holding a fast moving saw with the non-catching hand felt dangerous 😂
glad you are all safe, the videos l have seen have been terrifying, too many people lost so much and lives, l hope they find the ones that started many of those fires deliberately which was clear to see that was the case, such a shame the government isn't doing more to stop this with long prison sentences for offenders, also including culling all eucalyptus trees for a start! and making those with abandoned land due to families giving up on it accountable for clearing their land or face huge fine, happy to hear the north that was badly affected have had rain now.

Much respect for the fire crews in Portugal. Palet house is looking good. You need to make a cart out of a palet and some bicycle wheels, that lil wheelbarrow can only do so much, it needs a vacation.
I love your happy pets...such personalities and they have the freedom to roam about which is increasingly rare, in the states anyway. I tried to find the lovely song that you played at the (almost) end with lyrics, but couldn't. Do you mind sharing? I love watching the progress you're making on the new cabin, how great for you to have more space this winter. And Carissa, you've brought the gardens along nicely in spite of the dryness and poor soil you had to start with. Well done!
One way to save snapping off screws is to pre drill with a regular drill bit, one or two sizes smaller than the screw so the screw goes in way more easily.

Interestingly they don’t seem to make their nests there, I wonder if it’s because the birds can get under?

I would advise thinking about a sprinkler system on your wood cabin roof, then you can soak it should a fire threaten in your area.
Gloves Glove Gloves.....PPE for even the most mundane jobs is my motto. Splinters etc. From wood are avoidable with a few pairs of PPE gloves...better than garden gloves.
As an Aussie, I can say, sadly, that it is indeed smoke.

Use the blocks that you cut last week to use as feet, but first put down a protective ground protector sheeting.
It would be better to prop up deck on cement blocks to avoid the wood underneath rotting. You can dig them in level.
I have been thinking about all you you tubers as my other half is in Chaves at the moment and so obviously with high fire risk couldn't ride his bike till the rains came. So sorry for the fireman who died. Great video as always, stay safe x

Lo de los incendios es horrible , aquí en el sur de Galicia ha llegado el humo durante dos días y el sol se veía completamente rojo . Esa luz rosada creo que si , es por los incendios porque aquí se veía igual pero más intenso . Había momentos que hasta se olía el humo . Espero que los apaguen pronto .

Love the progress you guys have made.💗 Question: are you going to treat the underside of the pallets as well? To prevent rotting due to rain? Once they are sitting on the ground & in puddles for extended periods of time, they may disintegrate? Or are you going to put a concrete floor down first? Glad you're safe. 💗🇵🇹
Bom dia! We’ll be putting the pallets onto blocks to raise them up off the floor - the same method we used for the cabin itself. I think we’ll actually add some cladding to the sides of the pallets so to protect the interior a bit.

Not quite sure why you didn’t stagger the planks over both pallet bases like a brick wall Euan ? More strength & looks more aesthetically pleasing on the eye ? Just an observation and way I would have done it.
Jeez Kevin.. I could have done with such a good idea last week 😂 I actually love your idea and am almost annoyed that I didn’t do it that way.. but.. having them separate does make it easier to get underneath if we ever need to so I’m going to retrospectively say that was my reasoning 😅
