    I can't stand that gimmicky gear shift selector. A traditional joystick/lever doesn't take up that much space. All I can think of is how you'll actually have to look down and stare at it when making your selection, and how dirty with crumbs it'll get over time. No thanks. Deal breaker for me

      Denton Armstrong Exactly right! I want a lever that I can grab with my whole hand not buttons, I bet the 2020 redesign will go back to a lever after numerous customer complaints.

    I think that they did a nice job with the packaging overall but I think that the push button transmission selector should have been placed on the dashboard where it would have saved space. I like the center console lid. I'm looking forward to seeing the test drive and mash-up.

    He didn't pick one thing, and Honda ain't the only company with real active torque vectoring. It is right to sneer at using the brakes, though, since that's been around on production vehicles since 1997 or earlier. If you're gonna have pushbutton automatic, put it on the dash! it doesn't make sense to put it down where stuff will fall into it if it doesn't need to be there.

    • @Spearfisher1970

      Martin Espinoza Agree - right where a dog can step on it... We've learned that no pet owners' vehicles should have buttons that are on a flat horizontal plane (especially not the window or door lock buttons - thanks new Grand Caravan for teaching us that one on a rainy day).
      My question would be - does the new Pilot still have the built in tow hitch that all the old ones came with, and - if not - did they reduce the tow capability at all on the new one?

    • @spade118
      @spade118 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Martin Espinoza I know mainly luxury cars have it. Is there another competitor the Pilot that has torque vectoring?

    • @hyperlogos
      @hyperlogos 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      spade118 Not that I'm aware of. I don't think it's particularly worth putting it in the Pilot, though. The Pilot already costs too much, and EBD (which I just said it's fine to sneer at) is actually awesome. It works really well, and it really doesn't take much power. If you couple it with a torsen diff, which is cheaper than a torque-vectoring diff, it takes very little power to keep it working in the snow and whatnot. The real problem with torque-vectoring is that it only works when all the sensors are working. A mechanical LSD works even when nothing is working. So this is the high-tech choice, but it's not clear that it's the best one.

    • @spade118
      @spade118 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Martin Espinoza I agree the current pilot is can get expensive but it is very capable now, with the different modes it has. Not sure how much it has increased in price.
      Honda does have a cheaper all wheel drive system in the CR-V but its only kicks in with front wheel slip. Which makes it ok but not as capable as the Pilots competitors
      Actual torque vectoring all wheel drive is much more capable in all weather conditions. Which is the only way I can imagine it working in sand and snow or mud or whatever. If this is anything like Acura's torque vectoring system I can imagine it making this car very confident in all weather conditions.
      LSD doesn't do a good job when the one wheel starts slipping as it has no torque to send to the wheel. like ice. Brake vectoring also is good but in the snow im guessing the aggressiveness is drastically reduced which makes its effectiveness minimal. In the dry those two combined can be very good I imagine.

    • @hyperlogos
      @hyperlogos 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      spade118 There's some truth to your points, but you're overstating the case. What LSD brings to the table when coupled with EBD is that you don't need to use very much braking force to keep the wheel from slipping, and the LSD working. When you couple LSD with EBD the results are excellent - EBD is really quite good even with just an open diff.

    I am glad you interviewed the Honda Engineer and let him speak about some of the features; his explanation of the new rear diff sounds like they used the SH-AWD diff from the MDX and made some software tweaks to male it a little less sporty. Also, please leave Nathan off the reviews of crossovers; he does them a disservice and drags the quality of most of his reviews down by insulting the intelligence of the audience. I am a car fanatic and rarely watch TFL Car anymore, but watch TFL Truck due to the quality of the reviewers doing the testing.

    I like it better than the fist time I saw it. Still looks like a big CRV to me. Not crazy about push button transmissions, and even if I did, why down where my drinks are going to spill into them and gum them up? Also, if this guy is the lead on the project, no wonder it looks like every other bland car in the segment out there. That guy was rehearsing his lines all night I bet. I hope he wasn't late for his shuffleboard game. Overall, this Pilot is a disappointment in styling for me. I have been driving my 05 Pilot since new. The BEST vehicle I've ever owned, second only to my 03 Accord. Pretty? No. But it didn't look like everything else, lost in a sea of RXs, CRVs, Explorers, Highlanders, RAV4s, etc. I'm a Honda fan, but between the stupid inverted V thing on Acura's and Honda trying to turn everything into a Homogenized one size fits all vehicle, I'm forced to look at other Asian makes to see what else there is out there. The Korean brands have some a LONG way in the past 10 years you know...
    Toyota is looking better, style wise, but dang Hyundai and Kia are looking like real competition these days. That Genesis has impressed the crap out of me since it was launched, and the new Sonata styling is bang on. Now, I'll start looking at long term reliability. If that's on par with Honda/Toyota then I'm going to go there and look at them in person. Not sure about the interiors though...last one I drove a few years back still felt chintzy...

    Getting rid of the traditional transmission shifter for push buttons is a stupid idea. I would have to look for a button at night time instead of just feel the shifter. Trunk behind 3rd row is too small to carry ice chest, portable gazebo, fold up chairs, wagon to soccer games.

    I own a 2012 Pilot and am due for something new. I like the interior...but the new exterior styling is a deal breaker. Looks too much like a minivan now. While the old styling was in fact boxy, it was also unique and more masculine. There was no mistaking a Pilot for anything else on the road and that really cant be said for the new one.

SUVs getting less and less versatile to those of us needing to carry things, big solid shapes, more than people. Think my dog kennels on vacations or big box shopping. After an 830 mile road trip in my 2011 Honda Pilot, (which road well, was comfortable & spacious, but had terrible road noise), I turned in the Pilot for a 2012 Toyota 4Runner, which rode much quieter. The new pilot sucks!
    I'm NOT coming close to the 20/27mpg. 7 inches wider than a CR-V Yet I could fit more into the CR-V!?! Has signacantly smaller glove box & door storage is narrower & swallower.
    Radio sucks. NO CD player!?
    Engine labors way to much on mountains.
    Jerks forward when we put it in drive & jerks back when it's put in park.
    Driver seat area is the most confined we've ever had, making it very uncomfortable.
    It technically is bigger than CR-V, but CR-V is set up far better. Pilot while it seems ok upon test drive....Upon regular use it is NOT the beach, camping, full size it claims. Back doors are positioned so you can't get coolers out & in with ease, the hatch opening is narrower than CR-V making loading difficult for bigger items.
    Oil changes are more expensive & more often !
    1st vehicle we have had that we hands down hate.
    We don't feel safe in this. We have had numerous issues & we hear others are noticing Honda is pulling away from their reliable pass.
    So incredibly disappointed.

That front end is sooo much like a van it kills it. You went from an super nice design that was much more upscale, even in the visual comparison to Range Rover, but you just KILLED that! Wheel design looks like from the 80's. So the push button trans is for space? really? At least its not a CVt trans! The interior lighting is nice. Cargo config is great. Headrest fold is handy. I would likely take the Highlander.

    "they need their storage space... they have their electronic devices, their coffee cups.... the center console is a stylish shelf to place your fast food bag or purse....." This reminds me when the sun visors first became equipped with mirrors and THEN lights. OMG that was ALWAYS the very first thing the dealer pointed out to me back in the early 90s. I'd roll my eyes and check out the audio system instead.
    I'm wary of the safety of the third row seats in the event of a rear end collision. The seats are too close and even with any other type of collision, how will young children be able to get out when there are others in the second row seats? This is a disastrous idea all of the crossovers are designing.
    Either buy the Suburban aka school bus or the mini vans with more room for better protection and easier means of escape.

    Not really sure that there would be a justifiable reason to spend the extra money on an MDX when you get a top-line Pilot with a torque-vectoring AWD system and 9-spd auto, in addition to the dual sunroofs and all the other amenities, not to mention more space. I'm sure the MDX drives much better and has LED headlights, but I'm not sure how many buyers would require that.

  • @MrStandingO

    1. Er, um, as a man, I don't carry a purse. So the must-heralded "purse shelf" is not a positive for me. But far worse, the absence of a proper center arm rest is appalling. That dinky little fold-down is a joke. Question is whether they will offer a suitable alternative--I can imagine something that would have two holes and slip over both dinky armrests and create a stable padded platform on top, similar to what we're used to.

    I really don't see the usefulness of the 9 sp auto with a 6/3 VCM engine. I own the first VCM application in a 06 Oddysey and quite honestly 5 gears is plenty due to the motor barely having a enough power to push the car in 5th on 3 cyl much past 70mph. The slightest hill and it has to light of the other 3. The 6sp seems to be plenty enough.

    Honda ruined this video. Every time Mark Ernst talked I wanted to stop watching. Just let the car reviewers review the car. If I wanted a commercial (which I never would) I would watch ESPN.

    this is a load of horse done and the 2016 looks like a Buick how sad is that. Honda has killed the pilot hands down. just glade I bought the 2015 loaded touring 4X4 before it went out. hey how about that push button trans! that was in the old 63 dodge cars back in the old days that's not new. plus the loss of head room is also a sales killer. out of 10 I give it over all a 3. it just plain ugly.

    The Touch Screen infotainment system is a deal breaker. Ive tried it in other Honda vehicles, and I don't like it. Esp the Volume Control Slider. The choice of a push button gear selector is also a big turn off. That thing is going to collect crumbs, debris, and is in a perfect place for spilled drinks to ruin it.

    I would've asked for less plastic lower trims, sort of like the 2016 Kia Sorrento SXL and a wood like pattern or brushed aluminium interior trims rather than that piano black.

    Is Honda going to address the FM radio issue that everyone is reporting? Lot of static and fading in all channels. Will Honda provide a firmware update to permanently disable the Idle-Stop function that is too slow and annoying?

    As much as it looks like the rest now, for some reason this Pilot is actually starting to grow on me. I just didn't like the previous 2 generations. It was like this guy said. Had no personality, it was just a box with barely any tech features and alot of cheap, hard touch plastic all over the interior.

    I don't understand why Honda doesn't offer black interior on all their exterior colors.
    Especially on this crossovers & SUV .

    Two things. 1. That instrument cluster display is horrific and would be such an annoying cheap looking out place crap for the life of the car. 2. That display looks like they put it at best buy after purchase. Why can't u integrate it better.

    Have you ever wonder why they did not show the third row? Well, 'cause the biggest disappointment in this model is the 3rd row seats. I was at the dealership to take a look at this one and the seats are almost leveled to the floor, they are totally unusable on a long trip, even with the kids. I still love my boxy styled 2014 Honda Pilot.
