    The Toyota's suspension has Steel front lower control arms, which are strong and proven, especially for a heavy vehicle that is supposed to have off road ability. The Honda's Aluminum control arms look small for a vehicle of this weight and type. Aluminum has it's place on modern vehicles with it's lower density and lighter weight, but not on control arms tasked at taking extreme hits and keeping your wheels on, unless on a lightweight sports car.
    Toyota may seem to be advancing more slowly than some, but you can't argue with their proven reliability and durability.

    I just got the 2016 Highlander and I cannot understand people's comments here, my Toyota is extremely comfortable at 6' 2" I have plenty of room and the new lumbar support is amazing, my suv is fast smooth and extremely quiet, so I don't know if this a bias room towards Toyota or what.....Certainly none of you people know what your talking about.....oh before I forget my brother in law works for Honda as a technician and he tells me that he has replaced "several" of that 9 speed transmission you people blab about and he has 2 more setup for next week, I will take a RAV4 over a CRV any time any where.....but you go ahead and keep your Hondas, Toyota even with recent problems still sells more cars than Honda....lastly my vehicle was built in Indiana keeping good paying jobs right here in the USA.

      Alberto Riezgo I just test drove a 2017 highlander last week and automatically new that's my final car that I'm choosing. In my opinion it drove feel smooth, strong and very comfortable. I didn't find any issue with the third row seat though. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to test drive the Honda Pilot, although I did get drive a Honda CRV, Kia Niro and Sportage, Hyundai Santa Fe and non was to my liking.

  • @mykullee
    @mykullee 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    It was no surprise that Pilot won from the beginning when the specs showed up in the first 30 seconds... Honda's V6 is more powerful yet AG observed better MPG from their testing, and it has more cargo space. They wouldn't care about it being more expensive since all they're gonna say is: "We'd pay just a little bit more to have an overall better car with better usability and better performance"

    • @mykullee
      @mykullee 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wildman Sure, but I believe Toyota doesn't have DI in their V6. This is the same V6 also found in Camry which doesn't have DI. Also, Honda used their 6-speed auto in the Accord before.
      I'm not a Honda fanboy (rather, a Mazda) but factually, Honda has fairly good reliability as much as Toyota does. I'm not on either side, but just stating the facts.

    I hate comparisons like this because nobody buys $45k versions of these vehicles. The Pilot performance changes a lot with a 9-speed over a 6-speed most Pilots use. In the real-world, this is somewhat useful, but two $35k vehicles would be more helpful. The Pilot being bigger and lighter still wins.

  • @Roaming50
    @Roaming50 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    I own the 2016 Pilot Touring and it is mostly a good car but is has several significant issues that detract from it.
    I disagree with the reviewers comments about the 9-speed and being smooth. The 9-speed has smoothness and surge issues and mine is supposedly not affected by the TSB that allegedly fixes such issues. Its not exactly bad, but it's not good either. It is worse than just about any other car I have driven. It makes the car quite twitchy to drive.
    The infotainment system is horrible. The subwoofer does not work properly, the sound is lacking and the touch screen, as the reviewer mentioned is lacking from physical buttons. I would not buy another Honda with such a system. It is also slow to operate and the bluetooth is not ver good either as it can only handle one phone at a time and can't switch between two (unless you are prepared to wait a minuted).
    The FM receiver/antenna set up is defective on the vehicle. FM sound fades in an out as you drive. I have had a TSB done on mine that supposedly fixes this and it did nothing. It is a design fault, and Honda has not yet got this right.
    The auto/start stop is intrusive and impacts drivability out of t-junctions. It also cuts of a/c when the engine switches off. Yes you can switch it off but it has to be done every time you start the car. There is no option in the system set up to set a time delay before it switches off or deactivate it permanently.
    I have not be able to find anyway to switch the car off but leave it in accessory mode. Seriously Honda? You have to switch the car off and then press the start button to put it into accessory mode. This cause a huge delay in the infotainment system to restart and anything you were playing typically gets forgotten and starts from the beginning again. What a crappy system. I now hate push start systems (at least Honda's) and wish for a normal key ignition.. Call me a retro grouch.
    My wife and I hoped to keep the car for 10 years but in six months of ownership it has annoyed us so much with these niggles that the many good points are over shadowed. We will be selling the car and replacing it long before 10 years is gone. Shame :(

    • @inductivoc
      @inductivoc 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's an issue with most push to start vehicles. In my sister's toyota camry, if you leave the car in neutral instead of putting it in park, then press the engine stop button, it leaves it in accessory mode.

    • @williamcrews1525
      @williamcrews1525 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Colorado Biking In two push button start vehicles I've had, both Toyotas, not pressing the brake and just the start button puts it in accessory mode. Pressing the brake tells the car you want to start the engine. I can't speak on Hondas but, might be worth a try if you haven't already.

    • @Roaming50
      @Roaming50 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It only puts it into accessory mode if the car is already off. If the engine is running you have to put it in neutral, brake the car with the parking brake and then press the start button to switch the engine off but leave it in accessory mode. If you push the park button then the accessory mode will switch off. Also another annoying thing is if the engine start/stop is enabled when you come to a halt the engine will switch off. Then if you put the car into park, the engine will restart and will not switch off again unless you press the start/stop button at which point the accessory mode is switch off as well. This is really annoying.

    • @williamcrews1525
      @williamcrews1525 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      wow, the Prius V and RAV4 my wife has owned and owns now weren't like that. You could go to accessory from off or running. That would be annoying but, I hope I never own a car with the start/stop feature. That IMO is the most stupid gimmick of all. It doesn't save any gas, is annoying at best and can be a problem in certain makes/models of vehicles. Way too much automation that is useless.

      @roaming50 Thanks a bunch for your detailed review. We bought a 2016 elite Pilot 3 days ago and the audio/radio system doesn't work. It'll start when starting the car but will quit in less than a minute. Also the sound from DVD player will only work with headphones not otherwise. Basically the infotainment system is a empty box with GPS. My husband and I are thinking to return back to carmax (we are in 7 day window to return) no wonder they sell insurance and we didn't buy thinkinh our 2003 Odyssey worked great for 18 years what can go wrong with 2016 with trustable Honda. Great review but I disagree on the infotainment system. I've also read plenty of reviews where they agreed with me on this. I guess this is largely a personal preference. We needed the space and we stayed away from the upper trim levels so we could get the more familiar 6-speed trans. The push-button shift select is not fun and hard to get used to. But I was more worried about having transmission issues with this new 9-speed. For us the EX-L AWD had all the features we wanted and saved us about 10k vs. the top spec model. We also noticed the accessories which used to come standard can now cost $$$$ more so we stayed away from them.

    Have to take issue with the reviewer's comments at 3:20 about Lane Watch Camera vs Blind Spot Monitoring. Blind Spot covers both sides of the vehicle. LW is only for the passenger's side. The Blind Spot Monitoring is an advantage in everyway over Lane Watch. I've experienced both and would take a true BSM system over LW any day.

The Highlander front seats are not that comfortable. The Highlander Platinum middle captains chairs have a weird gap between them. Cargo with third row folded down could be a problem. Seriously, avoid the Honda 9spd.

    Unfortunately the reviewers weren't given the exl with sensing, which IMO is what most people would look for. the problem with honda exl vs touring and above is the road noise. after careful reading it appears that touring and elite have better acoustic glass and more sound dampening material in door panels and carpet. This is very evident if you test drive the same road back to back a touring and exl. exl is very noisy.

    One should note that the "redesigned" Toyota Highlander is two years older than the 2016 Pilot. This comparison isn't necessarily apples to apples since there is no change to the Highlander from 2014-2016. One can say Toyota won in 2014 against the 2014 and 2015 Pilot, but I agree, the 2016 Pilot now has the upper hand in most categories. Regardless of what the pundits say, I love my 2015 Highlander Limited Platinum AWD. I just did a road trip of 2,600+ miles over the holidays and I never got uncomfortable or tired of driving the vehicle. I also averaged 24.6 mpg @ 75 mph with 3 other passengers, a dog, and the vehicle fully loaded with suitcases and presents. Finally, the Highlander is one of the most reliable vehicles made, period.

    Don’t bother buying a Honda Pilot. My pilot steering wheel leather started to peel at one corner and seat belt cover became loose at the holding clip. Dealership said all repair now must be approved by regional Honda rep and guess what they denied the warranty. Honda rep said steering wheel is a normal wear but my car barely has 30,000 miles. The seat belt cover they claimed we must have removed it and broken it when putting back together. I seriously don’t know where Honda came up with all the excuses. Do a search on the internet because you make a decision. Especially when a car manufacturer won’t stand behind their warranty.

    I really like the Honda overall is probably a BIT better.. But the driver side controls, displays and dashboard are far better in the Toyota, especially since Toyota stuck with a traditional Tachometer and speedometer - huge plus for the Highlander. I think Honda unfortunately chose a weird, strange dashboard design. When driving you spend so much time looking at the dashboard, I would have to go with the Toyota Highlander for final purchase. Oh, one more thing that I did NOT like on the Honda is the electronic shifter. At least you can still get a traditional shifter in the lower level Pilot. That's another reason, I am going with the Highlander - better traditional shifter.

    Honda haven't fix their automatic transmissions. They just don't last. Hope with the new CVT transmission that problem get solved. In my opinion both are good choices but in SUV I give Toyota the edge. Honda in small cars all the way specially if they are manual transmissions.

    The width of the 3rd row in the Highlander is excellent but the height is laughable. You can adjust the 2nd row to get some legroom. Spending 35K plus for one of these better fit an adult in the 3rd row. Avoid the 9 speed in the Pilot. Long drives and punching it off the line is great but in stop and go traffic you will learn to despise a DCT very quickly. The Highlander needs cylinder deactivation.

    Hyundai Veracruz, although now obsolete, trumps both. Designed almost 8 years ago offered luxury and tech unheard of at the time in mainstream import non-German brands. Lamda 3.8 V6 was powerful and smooth and with AWD ran a 20MPG avg in 2007!! With 260HP and 257 lb-ft it was no slouch. Its a shame it wasn't marketed as well and at that time people were reluctant to forge over Acura MDX - Lexus Rx350 money for a "luxury-esque Hyundai" All that is about to change when the GENESIS brand will be launched. Can't wait for the GENESIS LUXURY SUV.

    The Pilot is a great looking car, no doubt about it, but it has one feature which I think is awful, and which not many car reviewers show you. On the remote key fob, if you hit the unlock button twice and hold it in, the windows and sunroof all open, to let the hot air out of your car in the summer, apparently. Why you would need this with remote start, I don't know. However, you have to take the mechanical key our of the fob and put it into the driver's door lock to put the windows up. What's wrong with that? Let me tell you. Talking from experience, if you have the remote in your pocket, it's possible for the button to be pressed in without you knowing it, and all your windows will open - without you knowing it! I went to my car (not a Honda) the next morning, in January, to find all the windows open. Now, if it had been lashing with rain, the interior would have got soaked. The Acura MDX also has this feature, and I think it's time Honda removed it. It's unnecessary and annoying. For me, I'd take the Highlander. Just my opinion of course. Otherwise, the Honda is a cracking looking car.

    I don't understand why people would use these cars if people actually need a third row. If your family is 5 or over, these vehicles are not great. They are ment for a family of 4, who occasionally uses the third row for carpool duties. And also, the pilot looks just like a minivan, so I don't understand why people would do them selfs a disservice and by one over a minivan.
