    i like this case cause it’s proves just how good of a lawyer phoenix actually is. he has to defend a client (who although is guilty) has a BUNCH of evidence implicating him as the killer and Phoenix uses the SMALLEST shred of doubt the judge gives him to completely flip the evidence on Andrews. He manages to make all the evidence that implicated his client implicate Andrews and the ONLY reason why she doesn’t get a guilty verdict is because Phoenix actively chooses to do the right thing. it’s why i really love this cases. phoenix is such a good lawyer.

      What makes it even better is when you realize that he could actually do this to anyone. Imagine is he was corrupt and used these tactics to constantly implicate innocent people. he could get away with it. Phoenix could actually become the strongest villain in this series.

      This message was not good for me. I never trusted any defendant blindly. At some point I thought everyone could be a murderer (except for Maya in both 1-2 and 2-2, Larry in 1-1 and almost immediately Will powers because he was too goofy and there was nothing in the game saying he had any kind of relationship with the victim other than coworkers)
      I think that to trust someone he has to cooperate and you have to have at least a couple reasons to believe them. And the thing is if you start every case by trying to think they might be the killer and then search for contradictions you can easily understand they’re definitely not guilty. (If they were they would not say a certain thing or react to an event in that way)
      Engarde not only was the least cooperative but gets incredibly suspicious very fast instead of less and less like any other defendant so to me there was no twist at all in this case.

    My favorite moment in this case (and in JFA) is the moment right before Franziska enters the courtroom. When you're out of evidence, you can't stall any more and you have everything you need to get a not guilty verdict, and the Judge asks you to plead and name Matt or Adrian the client. You have to choose between leaving Maya to die or framing an innocent woman, and there's no good outcome. Of course, the choice turns out to be irrelevant, but you still have to make it, and it's probably the hardest choice in the Ace Attorney series, and I love that the game forced me to do that.

    • @zs8934
      @zs8934 2 ปีที่แล้ว +95

      This part had the biggest impact on me, but it was more at the end when you're presented with an interesting view on it - sure the choice you made didn't affect the outcome, but _you_ know what choice you had picked and you know what the result would have been, and maybe that can tell you something about yourself. Phoenix getting "betrayed by the magatama" was a really great move. They spend the entire game lulling you into being comfortable with the idea that no one can hide anything from him because magic... and then just pull the rug from under you all of a sudden.
    As for the Godot twist, I agree it comes from a mile away (he's basically suspicious from the time you meet him after the bridge is fixed) but I DO feel that case makes a better instance of just getting the player very very confused (the extra case for the first game, with Ema is probably the best one here (played 1-3, Edgeworth 1, going through 2). In a spin all of the time). Even though it's easy to get that Godot is very directly involved, the twists with him and Iris are so wild that figuring out how the pieces fit and exactly what happened and why becomes the thing. Seeing the end helps you very little in understanding the details

    • @michaelgum97
      @michaelgum97 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      I don't really see it as being "betrayed by the magatama" but rather Engarde didn't do the act of killing Corrida, so the locks didn't appear because of a technicality.

    • @VileLasagna
      @VileLasagna 2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      @@michaelgum97 What I mean there is that the player is betrayed by a mechanic they were led to rely heavily on. Even in-game this is weird, though. Magatama doesn't expose lies per se, but it's described (at least in the translation) as "revealing people's secrets".
      Matt definitely had some huge secrets regarding hat whole incident, that they didn't trigger the Magatama when asked around it, IS a bit contrived. But the payoff is good so we roll with it =P

    • @justinalicea1590
      @justinalicea1590 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @Vile Lasagna The problem with the Magatama is that it requires the user to ask questions at all. This means that it will only reveal secrets of the target based on whatever the user asks. So when Phoenix Wright asks his clients, "Did you kill the victim?" and gets the answer of, "No," it is confirmed that the client didn't personally kill the victim. But if the question was, "Did you have any involvement in the death of the victim?" then Matt Engarde would have been caught then and there, as his involvement was hiring the person who did the actual murdering.

    I had my suspicion of Engarde being guilty when Shelly asked to defend him and made sure Engarde wins the trial by kidnapping Maya, this action implied that they were somehow suspicious. However what made this twist great for me is how it made me second guess everytime. The first half where they made him look innocent was well executed, I would go back and forth between believing he is innocent or is he guilty making it harder to commit to one until the reveal was made.

  • @MsAnimefan95
    @MsAnimefan95 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +22

    As someone pointed out elsewhere, it also tricks you into thinking it'll be a rehash of Turnabout Samurai. You've got a samurai actor accused of killing his rival, a distant woman acting a witness/possible suspect, and even Wendy Oldbag making a reappearance. Then it hits you with the twist that the good-looking Matt Engarde is nothing like intimidating-looking but good-hearted Will Powers (who also shows up). Conversely, the cold Dee Vasquez is nothing like the vulnerable Adrian Andrews. Hell, even the conflict between Phoenix and Edgeworth gets flipped around.

  • @DaShikuXI
    @DaShikuXI 2 ปีที่แล้ว +122

    I very much agree. This is one of the strongest cases in the entire series, to the point where it almost feels weird within the game. It's like they poured all of their creative resources into that one trial.
    Subverting the Magatama was a genius move. Something I don't think we've seen since. The next closest thing would be Bobby Fulbright subverting Athena's psych exams.
    Throughout the entire series we chase the people who we know are guilty of murder. In this case however we have to accuse someone we know is innocent, and have to do everything to prove them guilty. It's not just Phoenix who has to deal with this, you as the player are actively participating. It makes you uncomfortable and you feel guilty yourself. For once you feel like the bad guy, even if you know why you're doing it. The game asks you to make a real moral choice. Do you put someone innocent in jail, probably for the rest of their lives, to save your friend?
    Then there's the overarching tension of Maya's kidnapping. Obviously we all know Maya is not going to die, because there's no way she would, but that doesn't mean nothing really bad can happen to her. So it does add stakes to the trial. We already know she has no food and water, so at the very least we want to get her out of that situation.
    We also get to see genuine growth in Edgeworth, who IMO is just as important to the series as Phoenix. He realises that something is wrong and actively works with Phoenix, instead of getting the easy win. In his past he would have never done that. Like you said in the video, this is a great parallel to PW1.
    De Killer is also a great sub villain. The fact that you actually meet him face to face several times, and the cast has no idea who he is, makes him pretty powerful in his role. He is committed to his clients and it shows. He actively embodies the morality and standards he sets for himself, unlike many other villains in media. One could say he is arrogant, but if so it is well deserved. His "loss" in this trial mostly came from Maya being a spirit medium, and still being able to communicate with the outside through Mia. Something he could not have reasonably expected. He basically lost to magic.

    I have to say the best moment in this case for me is the reveal of Matt Engarde being guilty of the crime and showing his true colors. If you do play this case again and pay very close attention there are subtle hints and clues that he is they guilty person. One thing is the kidnapper Shelly De Killer asking Phoenix to defend Matt and even Adrian Andrews behavior sort of hints at it too if you pay close enough attention. I can’t wait for you to do reviews for the next game “Trials and Tribulations” because if I am being honest here all the cases in that game are amazing.

    I really really like this case, as do most people. Adrian Andrews is probably the best witness in the whole game and Shelly and Engarde make for such a tense atmosphere. Edgeworth is yet again a standout here, and so is von Karma (for the first time if you ask me). The only thing I would change is Lotta Hart who does so incredibly little, and if her screentime waa removed and Oldbag’s trimmed, we could have had another new character that could throw us off, maybe someone working at the hotel? Also the photo where you need to select the trousers of the samurai is pretty dumb. Otherwise this case is incredible, and is the best case in terms of tone and intensity throughout the series imo

    Not just this case, but the entire 2nd game in general made me really question whether we (the player and Phoenix) were doing the right thing.
    In the second case, we were convicting Pearls *mother* into prison for trying to frame her niece for murder, probably effectively ruining her relationship with her daughter forever. Not to mention her mother was almost all Pearl had, and now she only has Maya. That’s not to mention convicting Mimi Miney in this case. She did a bad thing yes, but you can almost understand why she did it.
    The 3rd case was a clusterf*ck to the entire series, but I legit liked Acro. I hated Regina Berry with A PASSION and when I connected the dots on what she did to Bat and Acro, I was mortified. When she was telling a disabled man that his brother was now a star, when he was actually in a coma for MONTHS, and it was completely her fault… yeah I can understand where Acros coming from. And the fact he accidentally murdered the person who saved him and his brother when he was trying to get blinded revenge just added to the horror (despite the murder being stupid). I was heartbroken hearing what Acro went through and I was so split when we convicted him of murder. When he started crying, I wanted to cry too. I was legit thinking for the first time in the series “Should I really do this?”. He was the first person I didn’t want to convict.
    And then, of course, this BANGER of a case. The stakes were high, and the morals were low. Phoenix was almost 100% setting up to convict and innocent person of murder. Everything about this case was morally grey. There was even a silly joke made by Will Powers, when he was questioned, when he asked Phoenix if he was gunna accuse him of murder like he did to the witnesses in all his other trials. It was played for laughs but I legit reflected on that a bit. Everything about this game made me think…
    “Are we the good guys…?”

      Can i sympathize with Acro, Yes. Was the reasoning good and morally correct, NO. I can understand his anger but he cant hold his brother's condition over regina especially since it was an unfortunate sequence of events that bat kinda caused that led him into that situation. lets not forget bat started it by making regina sneeze with the pepper and then she decided to get revenge by a pepper laced scarf. then he volunteered to put his head into the lion's mouth to impress regina. i can see the hostility towards regina especially since its his brother but no one's really at fault, it was just a freak accident, definitely not warranting murder. And about the star thing, you gotta remember that's how russel taught regina about death, she's sheltered and naive, the wording could use so work but to her that is the same as saying "dont worry their in a better place now/heaven". About Engarde's twist, I've had my suspicions. The first time is when de Killer intervened to get Wright to defend, and the second time is when we see the door in his apartment leading to the cellar, which looks oddly similar to the door Maya seen when she's kidnapped. Then, the psych locks and I knew what's going on. I like the twist because of how much foreshadowing it has that you can see if you pay attention, but it still makes you question if it's real before it happens.

    For me, my personal favourite case in the original trilogy is this one, while BttT is definitely amazing in how it ties literally everything in the trilogy up and makes you realise all of the ways it foreshadowed everything,
    FmT just handles the high energy pacing so incredibly and really makes it feel like everything is on the line and that time is running out

    I think they played the twist very well by throwing curveballs. When Maya gets kidnapped to force Phoenix to get a non guilty veredict for Matt, I think probably everybody though "that's it, this is the case where you finally have to defend a guilty client". Why else the kidnapping? By this point, the fact that Phoenix never got a guilty client was too notorious, I think most people would be expecting to get a guilty client at some point, and the finale of the second game seemed a pretty good time for it. But between Engarde coming off as such an airhead and being able to fool even the magatama, it throws enough doubt that it seems that the kidnapping might be a red herring and he might be innocent, plus the fact that he's being framed as fuck. By the time of the five psyche-locks I think it's more obvious, or at least there is less room for doubt, but then, no one before had 5 freaking psyche-locks, so it still feels like the writers are making it stick out on purpose to throw another twist. I think that the issue of the real culprit would have remained more ambiguous if Andrews had looked more the part of a possible culprit, but she was too obviously (from the player's POV) innocent. Even if that made Engarde's guilt more evident, it made the plot way more emotional. It was fucking scary to see from Phoenix's POV how he could have totally get her declared guilty, based on the evidence, despite knowing that she was innocent. In fact, there was no actual evidence against the guilty party because, technically, he didn't commit murder, and he even managed to convince himself of that fact hard enough to fool the magatama! No evidence against the real guilty party, the evidence pointing to an innocent instead, and said innocent forging evidence, like the previous culprits and prosecutors did with the previous defendants, but this time against the real culprit... it really hammered for Phoenix the fact that he could look at the facts, the evidence, make the right questions, and still reach the wrong conclusion, or even worse, get to the right conclusion but drive everybody else to the wrong one. Not having Maya around really made the case feel heavier, but that little note where she says to Phoenix that he better gets Engarde found guilty was inspiring enough. Honestly she and Pearl are quite strong for all the stuff they got through, having poor Pearl around while asking Andrews about her suicide attempt or revealing Engarde's true self made for a way darker story. Gotta give credit to Gumshoe and Edgeworth, and even Franziska, for being so freaking good in a case where getting punched down by the prosecutor on top of the kidnapping would have been too much. Edgeworth and Phoenix trying to stall the trial as much as possible was genuinely funny at some points.

    My favorite case of all of the games. I love how all of the plot points (minus Edgeworth's revival) are all self-contained.
    I was on the edge of my seat on the Day 1 Trial. DeKiller promised to kill Maya if Phoenix didn't get a not guilty verdict in the first day, and Phoenix, in sheer desperation, did everything he could to get Andrews implicated, and going as far as pleading with the judge. My favorite part was ehrn the judge called it a day, everything went silent, and the screen fades to Phoenix burying his head in frustration and agony. It was the only time in all of the Ace Attorney games that you saw the protagonist have their own breakdown (I don't count Athena Sykes in 5-5 because she wasn't the real protagonist of that case). It was truly gut-wrenching too see. Nick was at his absolute lowest point in that moment. No other case has ever come close to putting the protagonist through the ringer as much as this one.
    This single case, to me, is the Spiderman 2 of the Ace Attorney games. In Spiderman 2, Peter Parker gets put through so much shit to the point where he breaks, and he still manages to pull himself together and do the right thing.

    I think what makes me love this case so much is that it KNOWS what people expect from an Ace Attorney Case, and is able to use that against the player.
    Even when DeKiller kidnaps Maya and demands an innocent verdict, I still felt like Engarde was innocent due to the first interaction with him. Besides, AA is a game series about overly-convoluted murder plots, so there has to be something more to this, right?
    Then, in the first day, you get so wrapped up in trying to blame it on Andrews that for a minute you believe it: Surely she’s the killer, and concocted some strange plan with DeKiller that needs Engarde innocent.
    And then the reveal hits you like a truck: It was never that complicated. Engarde WAS guilty, and hired DeKiller to do everything. The twist works so well because the case weaponizes your expectations about the games writing, and makes you gaslight yourself into thinking there has to be a clean easy solution to this messy situation. And when it reveals there isn’t one, it makes the stakes oh so much worse for Phoenix.
    Honestly the only other cases I can think of that even attempt this kinda meta-subversion are 4-1 (subverting your expectations of how first cases usually play out) and 5-6 (subverting how you view NPCs and potential killers)

  • @ladyofrandom8616
    @ladyofrandom8616 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    This case is so fucking stressful to play, but that's exactly what makes it so good. You're literally running against the clock to get that not guilty verdict by the first day when normally trials last a minimum of two, and this is also where the heads-down Phoenix sprite is first shown, exactly when he thought Maya had died because he didn't manage to wrap it up. Sure, you can know the story from the outside, you can know that Matt Engarde is the villain and you can know that Maya lives anyway, but that desperation and anxiety you feel while playing it is on a whole other level. It's a case so desperate even *Franziska* is willing to help you, Franziska von Karma, whose only interest before was to crush Phoenix in court. Once it starts to ramp up it's really difficult to put it down, I pulled an all nighter to finish it, best few hours I've ever spent staying awake.

    As Manfred von Karma is the most dangerous opponent that Nick ever faced, Engarde is more of a psychotic opponent who also the client whom Nick ever had. In truth Nick faced the "first" defeat because Engarde is his client and he is guilty, but at the same time it's also a victory because he was forced to defend Engarde but he also wanted to defeat Engarde and unwillingly to defend Engarde.

Maybe even have Godot as the prosecutor for when Franziska gets taken out of action.

    It was obvious near the beginning, when he said he did not kill him and the game made note of him not having any of those locks. That he was negatively involved, what drove that point home was his reaction to hearing De Killer for the first time and accepting Wright. Obvious when you put that into a game perspective. Sadly this twist did not come as a surprise for me, and thought it woukd turn out that way near the start. It helps that since the first trial I was anticipating for on of my clients to actually be guilty. That suspicion lingered.

    I think describing Andrews as a "closeted lesbian icon" is something harmful in character analysis. Dependency is a real thing, and while making jokes about Wrightworth is lighthearted and almost encouraged by this series' writing (see: my TH-cam recommended showing me "Gamers react to Edgeworth's unnecessary feelings"), here all this reading-into does is take away from what is the truth and paints over something deeply complex and emotional with an oversimplified, romantic coat of paint, and it is not even humorous. It also doesn't make logical sense, because there ARE no romantic implications between the two, especially considering Inpax dated two different men in the course of her mentorship towards Andrews.
    Something I think you missed out on in this video is emphasizing how important Andrews is not just as a character, but as a narrative device in this case. If it wasn't for her, there would BE no tension, because Wright could exonerate Matt in order to save Maya without negatively impacting anyone else; because of the fact that there is a delicate balance between painting Andrews as a suspect and not pissing off De Killer who'll think you're throwing the case. In this respect, there is also fantastic characterization from Edgeworth, because he has the chance to absolutely destroy the credibility of De Killer's testimony with the contradictions Wright had pointed out, but he cannot do so because he knows that the assassin is holding Maya hostage, so he, along with Wright, almost gives up Adrian as well as his case. It really hits home how he had changed since the first game; seeing him struggle to make a decision based on factors totally separate from "winning" or "losing."
    Lastly, I was severely disappointed by how you practically glossed over the fact that Corrida is just as much of a scumbag as Engarde. Juan, just like Matt, participated in these petty feuds with his rival, using anything and everything to try and win over him; he abandoned his soon-to-be wife simply because he could not stand the fact that she had dated his rival previously, and when she commits suicide because of this, he then proceeds to use her own death as a TOOL for his rivalry by forging a suicide note and lauding it over Matt's head. They're both disgusting, and it's a shame you did not do so much to cover his characterization as you did Engarde's.
    Overall a very good video, I just feel as if you could have done better in your analysis.

      I think you're forgetting that her being gay and her dependency are NOT mutually exclusive in the slightest. You're free to have your own interpretation of course, but there are definitely bits and pieces that could support Adrian being a lesbian (or at the very least into women).
      When it comes to codependency (I kind of consider her as BPD, she fits the criteria quite well), very very often (if not almost always), the other party is a romantic partner or at the very least of romantic interest to said codependent individual.
      She showed no interest in any men let alone Juan Corrida, her relationship with him was purely utilitarian in nature on her end -- he was merely the means to an end. We've never seen her display any interest in men in the slightest, and everyone we've seen her form attachments to/dependency on has been female -- not just the woman who killed herself, but also later Franziska. You say the other woman dated men -- and sure, but it doesn't erase the possibility of Adrian having a crush on her anyway.
      It could be unintentional, but I have reason to believe it actually did intend to come across as gay -- The creators of this series are known for taking inspiration from BL/yaoi/whatever you call it, and they've talked about that. Basically, they're no stranger to gay undertones lol.

    • @analysissel
      @analysissel ปีที่แล้ว

      @@netherworldfiend Most of it is conjecture, and you're hard pressed to find a mainstream japanese artist who didn't take some sort of inspiration from a doujinshi at one point. Though your interpretation is a lot more measured and considerate than Tbone's, I still stand my point that this sort of extension of her character is harmful, especially the attempted use of Franziska as evidence for her dependancy linking towards sexuality, because that demeans that whole arc. There are ZERO romantic inclinations between Adrian Andrews and Franziska von Karma, and to treat that interaction as such takes away from (1) the interaction's illustration of Franziska's controlling nature and manipulation of the case, and (2) the interaction's whole point of demonstrating the harmful nature of Adrian's condition and how she needs to trust in something other than herself to feel grounded.
      Positing Adrian's sexuality more like a headcanon than anything based on real evidence, and is a lot like talking about Kanji Tatsumi's sexuality in Persona 4. Sure, they COULD be gay, but it's not the point of their characters.
      Additionally, the original point of my comment was to criticize Tbone for a shortsighted, unfounded, and harmful aspect of his analysis, which he himself backpedaled on, regarding it as a joke. Unlike you, he seemed to have no basis, real or imagined, for the observation.

    Pearl’s role in this case was the most prominent, the only case Pearls was Wright’s primary assistant, she channeled Mia Fey and used her spirit to establish communication with Maya while she was being held hostage. Pearls accompanied Phoenix Wright during this case

    4:57 I saw that! You hide a Franziska x Adrian fanart in there, I had to slow down the video’s speed to 0.25x just to see it!!!! Clever.

    I don't like the 2nd game so much, but the 4th case is an exception, it might even be my favorite. When it was revealed that he was the true murderer, it was the biggest shock in the entire series. The fact that you have to do so many questionable things to try to save Maya, and even talking to the killer himself, it's such a climactic experience. The case turns from your usual job, to something entirely different, and Phoenix has to act much differently than usual, same for Edgeworth, while trying to not to "break the rope". The ending is also incredibly satisfying. You mentioned many of the good points of this case, great video

      @@abridge2 huh, I didn't know. I might've never encountered this in-game. That's interesting to know. But then again some real Gay-Energy is Phoenix and Edgeworth (albeit not necessarily). Larry is always chasing women so he really doesn't strike as gay
