    I have been apart of the goth subculture for about 7 years and have just now realized that to some extent, we do conform to the origins of the subculture in regards to wearing black and listening to goth music, however, I think outsiders don't realize that there are a lot of different styles to the culture as well. Such as victorian, vampire, romantic, pastel, trad, and many others. LOVED THE VIDEO THOUGH!!! :)

    To me, wearing band shirts/the typical metal style is about showing where I belong, what I like and finding other people who like the same music. It's not about showing the world that I'm "different", it's about finding people who are like me. I don't care what the rest thinks. (Well, and also I want to support the bands I like). Pretty sure I'm not the only one who thinks like that.
    Also: nice video, as always!

    In my experience, the reason I got into metal was because I was exposed to it early in my life and the people that liked pop and rap music shunned me as a kid even when I liked that stuff.
    I'm not just 'tryna be edgy' or whatever that stupid shallow statement means. Being different out of passion is not inherently bad, case closed.

    Great subject, but there are a couple of key things missing. One of them is time. Back in the 2000s and before, the "norm" wasn't as tolerant as it is today. Now, there are makeup products at Sephora called "Heavy Metal" and "Slayer". H&M sells edgy jackets, and many other examples can be listed. Therefore, nowadays it is difficult for fashion to reflect anti-conformity because there has been a blend during the past decade between the mainstream and the underground, hence the idiocy of people wearing t-shirts of bands they don't know. Also, a lot of gamers wear video-game shirts, so many people confuse band shirts for video-game ones.
    Secondly, I don't remember if this was on your video or someone else's whom I commented, before we say "average" metalhead, punk, goth, or so on, we should say "visible" instead of assuming that all of them look a certain way. That's because the base of these subcultures is their individual genre. Some people are non-visible punks/goths/metalheads/industrialists, meaning that they listen to their core genre that they love the most, but they won't dress the stereotypical part. "Incognito" is a term you'll hear sometimes for people like that, and I almost always see them at concerts. They may look like a normie, but their taste in music may not be the most conforming while they are amongst their peers. 😉
    When I'm out in nu/trad-goth attire, including full makeup, I do get people staring, but they're usually people from second and third world countries, as well as children. They don't do harm, so I just look away. When I used to dress like a metalhead (picture yourself but without the bracers), some people looked at my t-shirts, but not many. And, when I wore my leather jacket on top, some people thought I was a biker (and that's where metal took the idea from, anyway).

    Great topic BMW. I have noticed over the years, that certain sub genres of metal attract different political types. I find that OSDM , Thrash and Nu metal generally attract those on the right side of the political spectrum. While those who listen to BDM, BM, SLAM and any of the grind sub genres are generally lefties. If metal was a political movement and not a social one. I believe it would be "post apocalyptic tribalism" .

    Speaking about musical conformity.
    Nobody even knows that I love metal unless they specifically ask. Though people very rarely ask. I think only one time in my life somebody asked what I'm listening to when they saw me with my headphones. Nobody even considers that someone might have different taste of music; people assume it's the same usual stuff we hear on radios and in media. I laugh when I see comments in Facebook saying "please, share a good song list" or "share your spotify list, people". Not even in specific musical group, just our city or other FB groups. As if everybody just has same taste of music.

  • @nikolaik4579
    @nikolaik4579 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The problem with the South Park quote is that it doesn't recognize that you can be both at the same time. So you can conform to your chosen group while still being anti to society at large.

    I guess I'm just naturally a non-conformist. My friends all used to call me the time traveler. I guess they just got used to it over time and stopped calling me that. I guess it adds something to do with coming into school one day wearing a Tandy a.m. headphone radio with protruding knobs on the one side for off on volume and station selection.

    What someone usually means when they say "They're a non-conformist" is: "They don't look and ACT like us, so they aren't ONE of us." Conformity itself is a concept of those in power, or who imagine such, as a means of determining/segregating those who are part of their clique and those who are unworthy. It is the opposite of inclusiveness.

    It is odd. In the 80s I was into DRI, Suicidal Tendencies, Dead Kennedys, Crumbsuckers and I got a lot less abuse than my friends who were into Savatage, Iron Maiden, etc. This could be due to the crossover fashion being a little more accessible to the 'in crowd', despite the music being arguably more extreme

I don't know how many times I've heard "she'll grow out of it". Well, here I am, 35 years old and a mom and I still am and look the exact same. I don't think you can "grow out" of being yourself.

  • @tierefuerimmer9635
    @tierefuerimmer9635 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think the thing is that true non conformists don't even label themselves non conformists or rebels. They just do what they want for no other reason than that's what they believe in, regardless of how society will view it . As soon as bands such as Beatles , Queen and Black Sabbath started experimenting with and creating their own style of music, they were automatically considered non conformists since they had dared to do what no other group done before at the time. But now fast forward several decades later and now the chances that most people in mainstream society have heard those artists.

    I've never considered myself anti conformist but I have and still do, for the most part deliberately avoid "mainstream" and blockbuster-esq media, games and art. The part I find odd is, it's not a big 'F-you I'm not going to check that out', it's more of a 'meh sounds lame maybe some other time' kinda thing. It's a strange behavior of mine I became aware of years ago. In some ways it's fun and rewarding looking into the dark unfettered corners of humanity, but in time I find myself landing on those titles once recommended. Are metalheads anti-conformists?"
    It really just depends on the person. There are a lot of metalheads out there (and a lot of people in general). Conformity is defined as "compliance with standards, rules, or laws".
    Technically, following this definition, everyone is a conformist in some way.
    Even the people that say "screw the rules, blah blah blah" are still technically conforming to something. Again, this is all going by the "official definition" of the term "conformity".
    I'm being very legalistic here tbh.😆

    I actually love metal but I wear pretty standard clothes and I think that's because I don't really like black clothing personally. They get washed out in time and idk. I mean I'm all about the bracelets, the patches, the posters and all that. But it's annoying that I'm considered unworthy of listening to metal like wtf. So I guess my problem is quite the opposite from most of you guys :)))) At the end of the day you just have to be yourself and do the things that make you happy

    I was into a lot of interesting music growing up and I mean really out of the way stuff it was right after my super stupid pop everything phase I mean we all went into it we've all had the super stupid everything pop is awesome phase and when I finally surfaced I was like oh no. So I began looking around for all different kinds of music to listen to and I heard ax offering, then I heard kiss destroyer, and I was like what's this cuz you got to remember I'm coming out of Pop everything like current pop everything phase. Then I heard icon self-titled album and then night of the crime and then king kobra then the scorpions then ACDC then accept then lion then Raven then grim reaper then Slayer and then roxx. Then after that wildfire and a hole bunch, of kind of out of the way stuff that really sounded like pop rock from the seventies eighties and early nineties and then I discovered the Michael schenker group . Creeeeeek went the archive door and I haven't looked back since. Here's a short list of bands that I really think rock. Van halen, the rods, Judas priest, iron maiden, kicks, LED zeppelin, Molly hatchet, angel, Uriah heep, Ted Nugent deep purple, black sabbath, night ranger, twisted sister, metallica, iron butterfly, Grand funk railroad, the Jimi Hendrix experience, bonham, the Jeff Beck group, nazareth, tesla, Cinderella Def Leppard rage the UK metal band stormbringer the 1980s metal band silent rage, fastway, waysted, skid row, dio, rainbow, alcatraz, yngwie malmsteen, etc

    Fun fact: we are all conformists.
    Even if you are anti conformist, then you are conforming to it.

    Tbh i think some of us kinda like being anti conformist. It makes look cool or "superior" because with things like tik tok and cardi be in the mainstream and these people doing stupid stuff for fame, we're thankful that were not doing that.

    Metal is naturally anti-conformity, but that doesn't mean you can't find conformity in metal crowds.

    Us metalheads are kind of like biker gangs, in the sense that we look different & don't belong to mainstream society but within our group we are just like each other & we share great passion for great tastes.

    It may seem that metalheads are non-comformits to outsiders, but in my experience, once "inside" the community, the level of conformity and close mindedness of metalheads is on par, if not higher, than in the general population. That South Park quote you made is unfortunately true in a lot of places!

    I am anti conformist. I am a metal head. Can you be a conformist and still be into metal? Yes. But they are only cool if they are a military, or a weight lifter. If you are wearing a suit and tie have that short hair cut. But when no ones looking you listen to ghost.............
    I look at being into metal, punk, goth, and alt sub cultures are just that a sub culture. I would like it one day. That we had our own country.

    True non-conformists just don’t give a shit. I think a good example of this is Jack Grisham from the Punk bands TSOL and Joykiller who never followed punk style, really doing his own thing which was unlike anyone else. I don’t listen to Metal, or for that matter Punk or Goth, because it is non-conformist. I just like it and don’t give a shit.
