I don’t care either, but I’m always impressed by how comfortable people feel to insult your musical taste when it happens to be metal. If I would react like that to someone saying they like, say, R&B, the person would legitimately feel offended and everyone in the room would condemn me, no matter if they like R&B or not. But with metal it’s like there is a consensus that it’s bad and that it’s common sense to hate it.

I'm a metalhead. I've been into metal for 40 years or so. I'm, also, into jazz, classical, rock, blues, rap, etc. I don't like everything in any genre of music. I like what I like, for my own reasons. I dislike what I dislike, for my own reasons. I DO NOT like/dislike music because someone tells me to. I listen, then decide. In my experience, most metalheads do the same. It seems to be the mindless, mainstream drones that hate on music, and anything else they are not specifically told to like by "THE MEDIA".

Indeed - I'm 49 at the time of writing, and even though metal is my favourite genre, I can appreciate music from many genres - probably due to the amount of metal that has actually included things like classical, opera, blues, rap and other genres into it. For ME metal is THE most inclusive genre out there, with influences from all manners of musical backgrounds.
Hell, it all goes back to European folk music and American blues in the first place.

I feel like there has been negative media surrounding metal for a while, so a lot of people feel like it is wrong or bad. What I find interesting is the societal phenomenon of celebrities/influencers picking up small pieces of a subculture (like band shirts or combat boots), making it mainstream or trendy, and only then does it become "ok" or less polarizing. I've seen it through TikTok and Pinterest, trends coming and going while actual members of the community are ostracised before and after the thing, whatever it may be, is popular. The world is full of sheep :)

It's always easier for most people to stupidly say "I hate" without any source of knowledge or understanding than to express and accurately formulate what they actually enjoy, like or love and why. I believe it's also part of the modern times to quickly express what passes for an opinion than to actually take time to give it some thoughts and confront their preconceived ideas.
You know the overused expression "haters gonna hate" - in this case, it is relevant. Just pay negative people no mind and surround yourselves with folks who will bring out the best of you.
The rest is background noise and a genuine waste of time.

I was raised by my dad who was a boomer rocker, very into Chicago and the stones. I was raised to hate metal the irony is that my musical vocabulary was pre-disposed to be more open to it. I've been listening to Broadway and rock music since infancy. So I became musician. Being a musician made me so open to new sounds that I naturally fell in love with it much to my dads chagrin He mocks the vocals and down-tuning that's about it though he doesn't care about the imagery.

100% agree with you on this.
The few people I have met that don't like metal have the most basic understanding of radio rock/metal and use that for their point of reference. They'll just see edgy and satanic where as everyone else actually know the bands we're talking about. It's the imagery that metal presents too. I've seen a few of those crappy reaction channels, one was this woman who was saying these bands are so violent after watching ONE Cannibal Corpse music video.
But it also goes for us too, a lot of us have a general disliking to country (modern country for me sucks), rap, pop, etc.. I am somewhat informed when it comes to the genres I don't like but I could see where they're coming from.

  • @pietrayday9915
    @pietrayday9915 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

If we're being fair, we'll have to admit that metal really doesn't make itself very easy for "normies" to like - that's part of its appeal for many of us - while as time goes on, metal pushes itself to further and further extremes distant from the pop music norm.
I mean, consider the ways that metal has evolved over the decades: early metal was practically indistinguishable from more radio-friendly rock, with bands like AC/DC, Blue Oyster Cult, Led Zeppelin, KISS, and Van Halen straddling or crossing the line and being a regular part radio rock playlists in their time, and even today appear under the catch-all category of "classic rock", even thought they had a number of songs between them that wouldn't have sounded out of place alongside Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Saxon, and the like... and even Black Sabbath sounds more like "normal" classic rock than the music that appeared in the wake of punk and metal crossing over each other's genres into what would become thrash, death, black, industrial, and gothic metal, driving metal into directions that many fans of classic punk and metal might barely recognize as music, had they suddenly discovered, say, Napalm Death, Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, Mrobid Angel, Darkthrone, Cradle of Filth, or whatever via time-warp to the 1970s!
For anyone used to what passes for pop music today - that autotuned R&B dance stuff - the now ubiquitous heavy metal growls and shrieks alone are a gigantic hurdle to clear before they can even give the music a chance. Even the instrumentation is strange and harsh - buzzsaw guitars, thundering drums, etc..... And that's before you even begin to get into the bizarre costumes and imagery, the absolutely alien subject matter (the average pop song about insipid and obsessive sex and teen crushes finds no real parallel in metal's tendency toward songs about history, politics, religion, philosophy, the occult, fantasy and science fiction, etc.!), the weird song structures, the emphasis on a gloomy and anxious minor key sound palette (vs. pop's tendency toward major key), the use of strange jazz chords and exotic note scales, song lengths that fall short of or (more often) exceed a radio-friendly three or four minutes, an so on.... Put all of the different ways that metal says "don't like me!' together, and it's a wonder that metal gets any new fans at all!
Ithink a lot of us who have listened to metal for decades have forgotten what this music must sound like to anyone who isn't used to it, and maybe a lot of us don't quite realize anymore (if we ever did) just how much of an investment of our willingness to give metal a fair chance it took for us to embrace those weird vocals, strange noises, goofy costumes, odd musical decisions, alien influences, morbid subject matter, and so on, before the whole thing 'clicked' and we got it... many of us who were around since the '70s and '80s got into this thing gradually, moving across the spectrum from harder rock styles like psychedelic, shock rock, hard rock, prog rock, punk rock, goth rock, New Wave, original heavy metal, and so on, into NWoBHM and speed metal, then thrash, and on and on until extreme metal just seemed like another sort of rock music to us.
For those "normies" who never grew up on actual rock music, let alone had the benefit of working their way through 50 years or more of rock's gradual evolution into the metal we know and love today, a cold jump into modern metal must be quite an extreme shock: an extreme sensory overload of unfamiliar and jarring things that have no parallel in more popular music today!
Meanwhile, metal shooed out all the clowns a long time ago: metal ballads, hair metal's party songs and pop-style love songs, the occasional dabbling in popular styles like disco and so on, the all-but-extinct shock-rock or metal novelty songs (you can still find that sort of thing on the occasional retro-thrash metal albums, but it's getting rarer), and so on - all things that might break up metal's usual doom-and-gloom with a little accessible sunlight - are pretty far out of fashion today.
Add to metal's self-conscious efforts not to be liked by normal people, the fact that metal even today still struggles with a decades-old stigma and stereotype as simplistic and talentless caveman noises that will somehow make normal people drop out of school, do drugs, sacrifice animals, kill themselves, become misogynistic racist homophobes, and grow up into sociopathic man-children with no jobs or friends, and it's readily clear that metal has a gigantic P.R. problem to deal with, before getting any "normie" to passively listen to it by accident, let alone try to give it half a chance! It's something most people have to be predisposed toward ignoring or embracing before they'll even try to listen to metal and decide whether they like it.
After all, most of us who do like this music, like it in spite of the stigma, or even because of it - the bad reputation surrounding metal is for us a feature, not a bug - but try convincing "normies" who want no part of that reputation of the charms of a style of music that has outsiders convinced you are an unpopular, sociopathic, angry, depressed, suicidal ghoul!

Some people simply can't handle a lot of loud notes and the others are ignorant and never dig deeper.
My other favorite music genre is EDM (Electronic Dance Music and some of its sub categories) I'm really big into The Prodigy for example. I know a lot of metal heads dislike it, but its the complexity of different samples and sounds that can be taken and created and mixed to form a cool beat is what makes it enjoyable to me. It does take a level of skill to do from scratch. If you get to be a pro at it you can work as a sound engineer, producer and more. Useful stuff for resumes lol
I do listen to some hip-hop and rap still, however I'm very picky. Some mainstream "rap" today only has 8 or less words max in it. You're only listening to the track for the beat the producer created and not the artist who's dropping "fire" 🔥 bars lmao
I'm aware crossover metal and grindcore/goregrind has little to no words in the lyrics sometimes and the songs can be really short, but that isn't the point. These few "rappers" are putting in no effort, they don't help make the beat either so they're useless as musicians. Only useful to the record companies that make bread off them. When they are put on the spot to actually rap outside the studio they fall apart lol

Fortunately my dad had Marching out, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, Somewhere In Time and Powerslave on iTunes, to which I added The Book of Souls, Piece of Mind, The Number of the Beast, and Brave New World. When my parents bought an Apple Music subscription I downloaded Slayer's entire discography.
Now my family must live with the fact that they allowed me to buy a turntable and stereo.

To be honest, I met and saw countless people who actually hate metal even with hearing metal or rock. "Oh HoW cAn ANyboDy LisTen To THis ??" they ask. Always.
I see smug, cringeing faces of disgust when people hear metal or rock song and then loudly exclaim "This is not my thing! I don't know who can actually listen to this." They sometimes belittle you and look down upon you, because "HoW cAn ANyboDy LisTen To THis ??"
I'm so tired of seeing this, at least in my country. I'm so tired of people thinking that they are so much better then me and other metal lovers, just because they deem metal low. Then they turn around enjoy freaking Beyonce or anything that's on Eurovision (though there had been a few solid rock songs in past years and I saw lots of hate on those songs precisely from the usual Eurovision type of song lovers).
Pathetic. Metal is usually dark sounding, deep, harmonic melodies with heaviness and strength on them. Casuals simply cannot stand anything that they deem "negative". They hate minor key, they hate heaviness, they hate harmonies and darker lyrical themes. They love rainbows and clouds and unicorns... Because enjoying something darker and stronger requires sitting down and thinking, while many casuals simply don't try to achieve that.

I've had so many experiences of people trashing rock music in general, and people definitely distance themselves from metal.
I think you previoulsy covered a similar topic and I commented about a co-worker that stated that she "liked a bit of everything apart from metal because it's just screaming". A few weeks later, shortly after Chester Bennington's death, we were basically having an office party and someone put Linkin Park on the playlist. Then she said something like "I was in tears when I heard Chester died, he was my favourite singer, I even liked his screams". I was face-palming at the hypocrisy.
I have a friend that mainly listened to Pop and Indie rock, and was quite negative towards metal. I later found out one of his favourite bands was System of a Down. I think some people think about the perceived negative reputation of the genre, so distance themselves from it; which then just perpetuates it.
After a social event at a nightclub, someone asked me why I hadn't been dancing/singing along with everyone else. I said it wasn't my scene, but referenced I was into rock and metal. She then said she understood, but that style of music was definitely not her thing. I looked at her confused because the club did play a few rock songs like AC/DC, Guns and Roses, and The Killers - and these songs were ones that got the biggest reaction from her. I think people often ignore the "rock" part when you say "rock and metal", and just focus on the "metal"; then falsely believe there's no crossover between your music tastes.

I think even metalheads “hate” (probably not hatred... too strong) some forms of metal or some bands. I find metalheads can often at least explain why a particular sub genre isn’t their cup of tea. People outside the genre often can’t go much beyond the usual complaints about the harsh vocals. I think why there are so many “haters” is because the more extreme sub genres are very much an acquired taste. The path for for someone to go from listening to something outside of metal... say Duran Duran or Drake... to acquiring a taste for a band such as Drudkh or Darkthrone is not going to happen quickly. Too many little steps up the metal mountain for most people to appreciate those metal bands.

1:14... Absolutely. I've experienced this so much in my life. I got into Metal in high school about when Iron Maiden released Number of the Beast.
There's a popular idea to bash Metal. At that time there were people who knew nothing about Metal and would talk like they had knowledge about it.
It's the same today, only now the old Metal has become an acceptable art form by most people and the newer stuff gets criticized.
I have an opinionated friend that will go to all the stereotype answers in conversation. ... he'll say country is relaxing, things like that and he'll criticize Metal without having a frame of reference to draw from. I'll make specific reference but he has no idea who it is. One day he was riding with me and I was humming lyrics to Black number one and he's like what? I'm like yeah, type 0 ...and he's like, never heard of it ...so, something from thirty years ago that is history to people who listen to it, he doesn't know it.
    Thanks great vid.

I didn’t think I would like metal because of the stigma around it ( it’s Satanic, it’s for crazy people only) and the fact I thought it would be bad for my anxiety and anger issues weirdly enough. When I met a metal chick at work in 2016 that all changed she showed me King Diamond and Iron Maiden and my jaw hit the floor. I grew up around the era of Nu Metal and thought that was what metal was suppose to sound like so I was totally surprised it could sound that amazing. I started listening to lots of different bands and stuck with what I liked first then expanded my tastes to like all kinds of metal now. If your able to find metal on your own that’s great but it’s awesome when you can meet someone that changes your perceptions too.

most people have a filter when they hear harsh vocals that they immediately disregard every other musical aspect in a song and assume it's noise that doesn't go together, some people you just can't win but occasionally they'll overhear the right song and it will click or they will at least see the musicality in a song but overall it's my music for my ears, I won't force it.

I am a metalhead who enjoys a bunch of other music like old school rap, grindcore, electro, new wave, synthpop, jazz, classical, prog rock, post-punk, folk, funk, 60's garage rock, etc. The only genres I am not able liking is country and K-pop, I really tried my best listening to these but this is not my cup of tea. I understand where people come from when they say they don't like metal, it is not a popular music played at radio, TV, also they don't know there's a bunch of subgenres. They must not have people enjoying metal around them.

I listen to almost exclusively metal but there are a variety of reasons for people to not like it. Vocals are a big thing for people I know who don't like it.
I agree with your perspective that metal heads are kind of force-fed mainstream music. You can't walk into a store, turn in the TV, turn on the radio, etc without getting an injection of shit you don't like. And I agree that metal isn't baked into society like pop, country, and hip hop. But that doesn't seem to play a huge role in my experience.
However, in my experience, I've never really had people say they hate it for nonsensical reasons unless they're trolling because we are friends and they're just looking to talk shit. They pretty much always bring up the vocals and say, they could get into the music itself if not for the vocals. And this doesn't just apply to death growls and black metal vocals. Power metal and thrash metal often times have vocals that require and acquired taste. My wife doesn't like Iron Maiden because of the vocals.
That's just my perspective and what I've encountered.

  • @Greylan

I would suggest they try different bands or maybe different subgenres of Metal. Like JRock/JPop listeners may be interested in Symphonic/ Melodic / or Power Metal, more than doom or black metal. Uses that as a example since that applied to me. There are a few subgenre's that I've been able to get into and enjoy and some that I just can't get into like black metal. (and I have tried several different bands). Think it could be more of a pacing or beats per min type of thing, since not due to being unable understanding the band/singer isn't the issue, nor is it due to any "satanish" lyrics.

  • @drummerdude0515
    @drummerdude0515 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Number 1 reason anyone I've encountered dislikes or hates metal is the harsh vocals. Number 2 reason is probably the intensity and speed which they can't "dance" to. Both of those reasons are totally understandable to me and is why when the conversation comes up at work I don't go out of my way to defend Metal anymore, just shrug it off, life's too short for elitism and intolerance.

  • @MaryaleeScarlet

Coming from a strongly Evangelical Fundamentalist family I heard all the usual reasons: "it's Satanic, it's of the devil, it's intended to corrupt people." Of course they used the examples of bands that actually mentioned the devil/satan in lyrics, or sang about violent things. I've heard other people say "Oh, it's just a bunch of screaming and noise;" and, point, I don't personally care for what I refer to as "Scream Metal": gimme some thoughtful lyrics and a catchy melody plz. I've heard "Oh, it's just the same thing they sing about over and over." When I pressed for specifics the answer was usually "death/dying" and I was like "Ok, you don't like Death Metal, I don't really either. What other metal have you listened to?" Blank stares. So, there's a lot of anecdotal stuff that people morph into "opinions" without ever bothering to do any first-person investigating.

I think that most people just don't understand metal, and too many of them think that its all about Satan and demons and shit. But yeah, it is slightly irritating when assholes are too narrow minded to give it a chance. But on the positive side, things would be boring if we all liked metal.
Where I come from, I enjoy being one of the "different ones", because the rest of them are all the same.

They might have heard something super fast or super brutal and then they believe all metal is like that, or they think everything sounds like Maiden or Priest, or they think every metal and is all about satan when in fact there is this whole spectrum from melodic and catchy to the most brutal stuff you can think of and everything in between.
