    Nice video, thanks for the info,i started doing this 5 years ago with two crowns from the pineapple,last year the first started to bloom and now the second one is blooming,i live in Holland so i take them indoor in the winter,beautyfull to see it grow,only bad thing about the plant is the very very sharp points on the end of the leaf,i cut them off.

    Manure is feces from a cow, goat, horse, sheep, chicken, duck, or burro that has been composted with straw. Green sand is a mineral that is mined from the ocean floor.

    I use fertilizer, but not pesticide. I use a nitrogen fertilizer when they are small. I switch to a more balanced fertilizer when they are older so that they get the phosphorus, and potassium that they need for fruit production. I also supplement iron at all stages.

    It's actually a little odd to have any pups forming before it blooms. Like all bromeliads they form right after the flower emerges. When it does happen it is usually a sign of distress, but your plant looks healthy. Your plant could bloom at any time. Mine usually bloom in the Spring, and occasionally in the Fall. I prefer suckers to ratoons, for secondary pineapple growth, since suckers produce bigger fruit than ratoons. I remove ratoons and leave one strong sucker on the plant to grow.

    Is there anything special you feed it when watering?
    I have a sucker growing on my plant, when should I pull it off ? And after removing it from the plant do I put it in soil right away ?

    Great video Randy! I planted a pineapple top recently, and for a while it wasn't doing anything, then it started to grow a couple of new leaves at the top, but the growth is really slow. Then the other day I turned the pot round and I noticed two tiny ratoon growths from the base of the plant. When is the best time to separate them?

    I planted a store bought pineapple directly into palm soil in late April of last year. I live in SE Louisiana where it stayed outdoors until November, now still inside as of today. I'm watering it today and I notice there is a pineapple growing!!! The pineapple is already about 1.5" tall. I truly was not expecting this for another few years. It has been a warm winter and I do not have central heat in my house, only fireplaces and radiant heat. I suppose the soil and the weather conditions allowed the plant to flower in less than a year? Can you give me any insight on it's quick production?

    Randy, I live a stone throw from you over in Winter Haven. I'm taking my first shot at growing pineapples, I'm curious how your plants did this winter? I've only been down here for a couple of years and was told this winter was unseasonably cool. I'm interested to hear your thoughts.

    • @Sheikyerbouti8
      @Sheikyerbouti8  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +canuck20 They do fine in Winter. The only year I had any problems was 2010 which was a record year for cold. That year I had a lot of frost burned leaves, but they still pulled through. All you should ever have to do where you live, is throw a sheet over them on freeze nights. I don't even always do that much.

  • @Sheikyerbouti8
    @Sheikyerbouti8  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I amend it with fertilizer, compost, manure, and green sand. I mix those things into the soil.

  • @Sheikyerbouti8
    @Sheikyerbouti8  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Try going to feed stores or to the places where farmers get their fertilizer. It will be much cheaper than at regular retail stores. You can also build a compost bin and make your own compost. A worm bin is another way to make your own fertilizer. There are ways you can do it for cheap or even for free.

  • @Sheikyerbouti8
    @Sheikyerbouti8  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks Peter! It sounds like your plant decided to more or less abort the original crown. I'd wait until they are about six inches long, with a decent rosette of leaves. ie big enough to be planted and survive. Then choose the smaller of the two ratoons to remove and leave the stronger of the two. If the original crown changes its mind, and kicks into growth, then remove both ratoons. Leaving too many rosettes on one plant, spreads its resources too thin to produce good fruit.

    The best way is to build a compost bin, but you don't have to. Just pile it up, water it, and turn it every week. Once it is all black and broken down, it will be ready to use.

    Ok. They take several months to ripen, and like I said in the video that will be in the Winter, so I'm not sure how they'll do. Normally they bloom for me in the Spring and ripen around july. Hopefully they'll sweeten up even though it will be cooler weather.

    • @richardmyers9609
      @richardmyers9609 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jacqueline Dawson I use 5-10 gallon pots usually, but you can get decent pineapples from three gallons as long as you feed them regularly. Five is better though. I do grow my pineapples in partial shade, but not by choice. My yard has very little full sun, and those spots are spoken for by lychees, mangoes, bananas etc. I give them as much sun as I can, but full sun would be best. As long as they get a good solid four hours of direct sun they will produce well.

  • @Sheikyerbouti8
    @Sheikyerbouti8  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes you can urine, but you have to dilute it or there will be too much salt (NaCl) which will burn the roots. The ratio of nitrogen to other macro nutrients (P&K) will be very high though. This would be good when the plants are younger, but they will need a higher ratio of phosphorus and potassium when they are blooming and growing fruit. I myself have never used human urine as a fertilizer, but I have friends that swear by it.

    • @Sheikyerbouti8
      @Sheikyerbouti8  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Brian. It depends on the climate in which you are growing them, and how much sun they get. In the tropics where it is warm all year, they bloom in 12-18 months. Here in Florida, they take two years. You should be seeing flowers on your plants by next Spring. The fruit take about five months to grow and ripen.

      @@Sheikyerbouti8 I'm giving bacillus amyloliquefasciens a shot this year--so far it looks like it's knocking back the fig rust, but hasn't made a dent in the root knot nematodes in my jalapeno plants yet.

    • @Sheikyerbouti8
      @Sheikyerbouti8  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wiesejay Lemme know how that works. The best way to deal with nematodes that I've found is to cover the soil with thick mulch. Remove all grasses and weeds to eliminate roots for the nematodes to reproduce in, and don't let the soil get too dry. Nematodes prefer sandy, well drained, bare earth. They don't like soil with tons of organic matter in it. The healthy bacteria and fungus found in compost is repellant to them. These measures won't eliminate them, unfortunately, but it reduces them to a level where they are no longer a noticeable problem for anything other than the most nematode susceptible plants.
