“I’d rather be applying a visual brand than creating it.” That’s a clear distinction between Marketing Design and Brand Design right there!

My title is UX Director, but since we’re a relatively small company (~70 people), I end up wearing a lot of hats and oversee aspects of the brand, marketing sites, content creation, overall digital experience, etc.
We didn’t have a mature design team, so I’m also somewhat of an unofficial design ambassador w/in the company…and your videos have been a huge help 🙌

This distinction is super interesting to me. In my past roles I've always been on the marketing team (if the company was big enough to have one), but I think to your point, "brand designer" is the preferred title for me. "Brand Designer" implies the responsibility of maintaining/creating the brand and gives me authority to change and expand it where necessary. Growth/marketing design projects are of course a big part of my responsibilities and I have become fluent in marketing metrics/strategies and designing to achieve those goals. I think brand gives you the opportunity to think bigger, as you can also encompass company functions beyond marketing like internal culture initiatives, which are some of my favorite things to work on, and perhaps even influence product design if that's an area of interest.

Great video Charlie. Had never thought about it. I always would just group them, but separating Brand strategy and performance metrics, makes a lot of sense.

I’m officially called Associate Product Designer while I have marketing work but I’m in a small startup (like 6 people!). I like the split because I’m really weak at branding but I can use what the branding direction to create the marketing materials

Thanks for going through this. Very confusing, but only because they overlap sometimes. I like the idea of having both a Brand and Marketing designer.

Your video really helped me! I was struggling by searching for a video that explain the role of graphic designer in the marketing area. I consider my self a brand designer by the Instacar’s meaning and I think marketing designers are the most requested on the market… How you think I can gain more experience of marketing aspects where my clients come to me for re-branding or packaging projects? I want to work for a commpany now, no more freelancing (well less freelancing)

Discovered your video while searching for the meaning of marketing design. You're really amazing and I like every series where you compare and contrast between brand and marketing designs.
I love being marketing design, I feel that's my forte. I want to contact you for more advice.

    Here's the thing.
Brand designers do the work of understanding the vague responses and ideas of the executives, breaks it down into simple terms and creates messaging and communication guides for the marketing department, the brand designer first and foremost must answer the questions why do we do what we do, who are we, what do we do and how do we do it? And these then create the underlying concept that the visuals of the company are created on.
So, the brand designers do the hard work to make the work of the marketing department easier. After that, the marketing designers are much more specialised in the visual aspects and can create more stunning designs consistently when given the initial direction but when asked to create the system from scratch they struggle. A marketing designer mostly is the gun you point to shoot, the brand designer is the one putting the guns in their hands.

Interesting! I’ve not come across a company with that setup. The majority of companies I’ve interviewed have EITHER brand designers or marketing designers, not both. And the terms are used interchangeably. Where do you work? I’m interesting in learning more and possibly featuring your company on my podcast!

My official title is Brand design head, and I obviously work mostly on the Brand equity side of things. However, much of my KPIs is actually trying to raise up leads and aqui numbers for our products.

Currently my title now is "associate digital art director" before I was a " digital designer"
My day-to-day is to create all marketing designs for our digital platform. Ie: banners, homepages, emails + anything else that they may need for the marketing event.

So what does an art director do then? I would think it's the same as a brand designer right?

currently a marketing designer for SaaS company. My manager makes me do both brand and marketing design but all have to be under his approval. I have little to no creativity for campaigns and it's driving me nuts. Wish I went more with a company/ manager that was open-minded or would accept ideas/concepts that weren't his own. Feel more like a bird with clipped wings in this role sadly

Love your videos! May I ask how did you go from a UX Designer to Creative Director instead of a Product Manager?

    • @charlimarieTV
      @charlimarieTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I have never been in a UX design role. Before being Creative Director I was a marketing designer. And anyway product management is a totally different role to a design role! It’s not a promotion from UX designer to product manager, it’s a different career entirely.
