I just realized that I said “I’ve been a content designer for about 3 years.” Umm hello?? I’ve actually been one for almost 4 years?! I’m not joking when I say I struggle with math 👋🏼😭
@@yvonnexiao Lol. Luckily, I don’t experience back pain. I recently started going back to running 4-5 times a week like in my early 20s. However, I do have vision issues. My eyes are so bad that things close up and far away are blurry. 😭
Hey girl, thank you for this video. As a Brazilian woman trying to learn English as my third language and at the same time not giving up my career in writing/UX writing, your video was such a relief and guide. I feel like I'm listening to advice from a friend, reminding me to keep calm and go ahead with my goals. Thank you again for that. ❤
Thank you for sharing this!!!! You were able to overcome a lot of bumps in the road. This gives me hope because I am a 61 year old African American woman who is just now considering becoming a UX writer. I'm certain I'll have bumps in the road too, but I am very hopeful because of your video!!!😊
Yvonne I watched your videos while I was interviewing for my first Content Design job, and now I'm two weeks in and loving it already! So a big thank you for making me feel like it was possible and passing on your experience.
Thank you so much for sharing your journey! I’m having a tough career moment and always leaned towards design during my studies. Didn’t know UX writers was an actual role!!
I'm so glad you saw this video then. I've also had many tough career moments so I understand the stress you may be experiencing right now (and all the layoffs definitely don't help). Let me know what videos you'd like to see in the future!
I love this story! And you seem like a nice person with great sense o humor :). It's actually impressive that you work with language that's not your native language. I have a 1 year experience as UX designer in creative agency, but I believe UX writing is my niche and I've always had a passion for words so I want UX writing to be my part time job, but I want to write in my language, English grammar was always hard to learn for me no mater how hard I was trying. But I am Polish and Polish language is highly inflected language, so many things that are quite simple in English in Polish are like 'ok, now we need to spend two weeks thinking about verb forms'.
Thank you thank you! I feel the same way with my native tongue vs. English. Although I don’t think I would be able to do UX Writing in Chinese at all-the principles of design are quite different.
I'm taking notes from your videos for a potential Content Design interview at Microsoft. Getting all the design lingo down... FaceTune... Came in clutch... janky I think i'm ready
Thank you love!! I majored in Creative Writing and Psychology currently working in higher ed as an advisor. I didn't even know this was a job until a couple days ago. Now I'm trying to find everything I can about it because I feel like I could actually do this and be good at it! I'm 24 and want to try something new. Thanks so much for this video I loved it.
The fact that I allllmost considered higher ed too haha. Your background and skills sound all transferable to have a great career in UX. Welcome welcome welcome :)
I came across content design via a couple of books I got from publisher A Book Apart. I was just looking for design book, and the content books were part of pack of other design books. I have been following the authors on LinkedIn and then saw an apprenticeship today that I decided to go ahead and apply for. As with any new thing I want to learn about, I came to TH-cam to get more details. I am about to sign up for the daily content challenge as soon as I finish this comment! Thank you for posting your experience!
Thank you sooo much for posting this video! As a front-end web dev ready to explore more of my passion for writing and learn how to use it to continue contributing in the tech industry this was an amazing find! I noticed there is not a ton of content on UX Writing and Content Design as it relates to getting into the field so I appreciate your channel so much!! Just subscribed!
Jess!! Thank you so much for spending the time writing this comment. I really appreciate it. If you become a content designer one day, you’ll stand out so much having a technical background. It’s not a must, but is such a plus. I wish I knew how to code hahaha. Let me know if there are any topics you’d like me to cover!
Thank you, thank you, thank you. This was one of the realest and most helpful videos I've seen about a journey surrounding UX Writing. I appreciate you being honest about your experience because it is so inspiring. Also, your personality is so kind, fun, and hilarious. I enjoyed quite a a few laughs while watching this. After watching this video, I feel encouraged to go continue learning, leaning into the fear I have and just keep going :)
That's so inspiring! I could relate so much to your experience as English is my second language, but lucky enough, I just got a job as a content writer recently, and would love to become a content designer one day! Please share more about how to become a content designer! :D
Wow! Congrats on the new job. I'm so glad you relate to my ESL background and even more glad that you're considering content design as a career path. We need more ESL content designers to craft content that's easy to understand and scalable for international markets.
I found your channel thru TikTok. I’m having career crisis because of my major. I want to know more about this realm thanks to you. Please upload more videos about the skills needed for this position ❤
Thanks so much for this video! Would love to see the video of you reacting to your challenge copy 🤗 Could you please drop a link for the 14-day challenge? 🙏🏾
Thank you for watching. I'll be sure to get to it. Let me link the daily UX writing challenge in my description. (It's now a 15-day challenge I believe).
Hi Yvonne, this is really good. I have been a content designer for 3 years and I didn't even know what to call it at the time 😂. I'll absolutely love to see a portfolio for content design I can use. I have searched everywhere for a template but I couldn't find one.
Woah! I took up the challenge too and am the part of the FB group too. Along with UX Wrinting HUB. So, I recently joined as an intern, but I'm the solo UX writer atm and idk what to do, I would like to get some pointers on how to manage things and be better at UX writing. Would love some guidance.
You are so awesome. You can find a career you love right after graduation. I would like to ask, are there any books I can read as a ux writer? I also like this profession, but I found that there seems to be no Chinese books or information.
Hi! Thanks for the comment. I’d say UX writing is still on the discovery phase in China. Here’s an article on it: uxcontent.com/content-design-in-china/ The article also shared that there are a few books from the west translated into Chinese. However, UX principles in China are quite different from the west, so it might not be as helpful.
i enjoyed to listen your story, i proud of you, about 3 years i really want to become a ux writer, so i need some advice to help me in my journey to learn a ux write
Hey Yvonne, I have a very important question to ask - at times I see jobs opening in the market for applicants as UX and UI designers and specifically not as a UX writer or content designer. So those currently pursuing their career in writing like I am a creative copywriter, do they need to prepare themselves as per UI designers OR UX writer standards. Plz show some light and guidance
So glad I found your channel! I'm currently a college student with ADHD, and I've been interested in UX Writing for a while now. I'm thinking about majoring in creative writing because I love writing so much. I'm terrible at math and science-related subjects, but I do well in my English classes. Do you think UX Writing will be more in-demand and have more job openings in the future? I checked on Indeed and it was only pulling up around 150 UX Writing positions. You have a new subscriber!
Thanks for the thoughtful comment, Benjamin! Great question regarding job openings. I’ll try my best to keep this brief hehe. Content Designer was recently listed as the #12 job in the “LinkedIn Jobs on the Rise 2023” (I made a short video on it: th-cam.com/users/shortsdnDoBGb5H6Y?feature=share) It’s also the #9 fastest growing role in the UK. Tech companies have been super cautious with hiring this year as a result of all the mass layoffs. I’m sure there will be a lot more openings once the economy becomes a bit more stable.
Key point I took away from this video: networking. It sounds like reaching out to the alum and getting that referral made all the difference. Do you have any more tips about networking?
Thanks again for watching and commenting, Tyler. I think this would be a great topic to dive deeper in a video. My #1 advice? Network without the intention of getting a referral. Spending time to learn more about the people and their stories is far more beneficial than asking for a referral.
Hi. Is Ux writer the same word as contents designer? Although Ux writers are not yet widely known in the world, I wonder if you think that over time, global demand will increase as much as Ux designers or programming jobs. I am currently majoring in statistics, but I have become interested in copywriting and now I am learning a lot about Ux writers. It is very attractive to be involved in the user experience through writing !😮
