    • @_mrdance_
      @_mrdance_ หลายเดือนก่อน +51

      Well I won't say you're wrong, but you're exaggerating a little bit. The right wing politicians and sympathizers use the Viva España frequently because they're spanish nationalists, just as the right wing in Catalonia (Aliança and Junts) who are catalan nationalists, and the right wing in Euskadi (PNV) who are basque nationalists. But for saying Viva España it doesn't imply you're a nostalgic of Franco or a right wing sympathizer, maybe you just like your country (Spain) or are proud of it for some reason.

      @@plizard873 Maybe the other person won't say you're wrong, but I'll do. "Viva ***" is a normal way to cheering for whatever you want. "Vivan los espaguetis" as in "long live the spaghetti" is just an expression of love for spaghetti. So is "Viva España". Our left might be hung-up, and our right might try to make that shout as its own, but "Viva España" is just a patriotic saying, as normal as "Vive la France" or even "Visca el Barça" and "Hala Madrid". Have a good day.

    • @plizard873
      @plizard873 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@cuellas1338 you know perfectly that it's not the same thing, and I'm not afraid to admit that all comes for political reasons. There's never been a popular revolution in Spain, not even in the past centuries. Typically, the spanish nationalism (as it happens with many other European nationalisms as well) has found its best representations in the bourgeoisie and the rich people, defending the private property and the existence of social classes, and using all of this to justify the poverty and the labor exploitation. That's why millions of working class people in Spain will never feel represented by the red & yellow flag, and they will always relate "Viva España" chants to the fascism and the conservative side of our society. Thanks for the debate though.

    The Spanish anthem (3rd oldest in the world) was created as a ceremonial music peace with no lyrics and it never had official lyrics. Never.
    Primo de Rivera (not Franco) asked Peman to write lyrics for the anthem in the 1920s, but Primo de Rivera ended his rule before those lyrics were made official.
    In the 1940s there was another attempt.

    José María Pemán wrote the lyrics in 1928, years before Franco's dictatorship and his lyrics didn’t say anything related to fascism or Franco. During Franco's dictatorship the lyrics were slightly modified and with democracy completely eliminated.
    They could and should have kept Pemán's version, it’s the most popular, the best known and the best version which, I repeat, isn’t fascist and doesn’t allude to fascism or Francoism or any other political movement or figure.

    Viva España isn’t associated with Franco’s dictatorship. It’s the same as “vive la france” or “God bless America”. It was said before, during and after the dictatorship.
    The issue is that the left (broadly speaking) frontally oppose any sign of patriotism. You can see it happening in the USA nowadays, with leftists (again, broadly speaking) having all kinds of problems with the national anthem (kneeling, creating an alternative one for blacks, etc).
    Btw, I’m completely apolitical. I don’t care much about this issue, but let’s call a spade a spade: it hasn’t been until recently that saying Viva España has become controversial and it has nothing to do with Franco or right-wing politicians (even if they feel more inclined to say such things).

    I've always thought that singing an anthem lowers its status all the way down to tavern song. An anthem without lyrics sounds more elevated and doesn't force a particular point of view onto anyone. Sadly for me, many of my compatriots don't think like this and often try to push on the direction of creating words for it, what I consider a rape of our beautiful and iconic anthem

    Good video. There are really several reasons. The first as you noted is that it's associated with the Fascist government. However the reason they have never been able to get new words for the anthem is there is a huge split in society in Spain. The Spanish left and centre don't like still having that anthem as it replaced the democratically chosen anthem of the second republic before the civil war. Added to that many Spanish people dislike the king and don't want him mentioned. Added to that a large number of people in Spain don't regard themselves as Spanish. Being Catalan, Basque, Galician etc so it's seen as possibly divisive to have an anthem that half the team refuse to sing out of principle anyway.

      Primo de Rivera (not Franco) asked Peman to write lyrics for the anthem in the 1920s, but Primo de Rivera ended his rule before those lyrics were made official.
      In the 1940s there was another attempt.

    The lyrics are taboo because they made references to imperial Spain. As you noted, even viva España is considered fascist by the modern left. Some people sign the anthem, but it's controversial.

      The spanish anthem never have lyrics. Is a military march. The lyrics you refer were added during the franquist regime, and were never official. In democracy, the anthem returned to its origins

    Fun fact.
    I am from Spain and when I was growing up during the Franco government the anthem did have lyrics and we used to sign them at school.
    These are the lyrics we sang: th-cam.com/video/Ue4p3CoNjv0/w-d-xo.html
    Here's an even older set of lyrics: th-cam.com/video/BTFLVsNbYzg/w-d-xo.html
    The latter are much more beautiful, in my opinion (See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcha_Real#Lyrics_during_Alfonso_XIII's_reign).
