Treat ADHD with Psychedelics?

  • Can you treat ADHD with psychedelics?
A revolution in psychopharmacology started on the first bicycle day, April 19, 1943.
That was the day LSD was first intentionally ingested by its inventor Albert Hoffman, (a few days after accidentally ingesting it).
By the 1960s, in reaction to the counter cultural movements, the government prohibited formal study of these compounds, putting research on hold.
After decades of quiet and persistent advocacy, research has been rekindled and psychedelics like psilocybin (the molecule in magic mushrooms that alters your consciousness) are once again showing incredible promise in a wide array of psychiatric applications.
    - Treatment resistant depression
    -Mindfulness training
    -OCD treatment
-Reducing Anxiety related to impending death
It’s a very exciting time and this subject is a private passion of mine.
I hope this video can plant a seed for some researchers to explore the question : could adhd be treated with psychedelics ?
I’m Liam Danger Park, psychonaut and ADHD coach.

Thank you. I watched your videos about a month ago when a friend suggested microdosing. I was nervous. Your videos made me curious, so I did it. My life is completely different. It feels like my brain has been recalibrated. I have done things that I couldn't get done for 3 years. It's contentment without apathy. I was diagnosed with Adhd at 17 and it took til 35 to find a beneficial treatment. I have started sharing this with my fellow ADHDers. (I was also in a deep depression and suffered from PTSD which it also helped tremendously) It's like all the resistance/mean voice in my brain is gone. I can function in a healthy way without constant effort.

I’m terrified of getting medicated but my life is literally falling apart because of my suspected ADHD. I really appreciate your perspective and the clarity with which you represent your insights and you have helped me process and accept some things I'm struggling with. Please do continue to explore this further. The world, I feel, isn't as deprived of intelligent people exploring these considerations as some might misanthropically presume BUT it certainly does need more people able and willing to courageously explore, advocate and discuss them in very real tangible ways that we can interact with. A critical piece of the ongoing actualization puzzle.

I have ADHD and microdose shrooms for when I need to be productive (currently completing a Masters course in clinical psychology) so will take about 0.1g on the days I am studying and I find it helps with concentration (not entirely, I still get distracted and procrastinate but not as often) and the overall mood boost I find gives me the motivation to drag myself to my desk and begin working. I've not taken an actual dose of shrooms or any psychedelics before due to anxiety and a family history of personality disorders but I definitely want to experience a trip at least once in my lifetime!

I also have ADHD and an actual trip instead of microdosing I find more beneficial HOWEVER AND A BIG HOWEVER IT IS.
I found that my personal ADHD symptoms fuel extremely rapid thinking and a very strong root in conscious reality. I find mushrooms to be very very trying mentally because I tend to fight the altered state of consciousness. It's very anxiety inducing and fear becomes an issue. BUT battling this internal necessity of being in control of my mind gives the opportunity to practice letting go and learning to relax control over what you have no control over. It's literally a mental battle vs my fears in many ways. The trips never seem to get easier or less uncomfortable but I take away so many new understandings. One of the biggest lessons I learned, I like to describe as "let yourself vibe to wavelength of the vibrations that life around you is vibrating at instead of trying to make life vibrate and the wavelength you want to vibe at" ......if that makes any sense.
Sidenote: at one point I had a revelation and now understand why ents (from lord of the rings) have beards

Then I went to a Psytrance party aroud 18 years old and danced myslef into ectasy for hours (no drugs involved, I didnt even drink that night) from then on when the music was right I could dance without inhibition and express myself freely. If you struggle with dancing go to an event where your pumped about the music, let go and just shake off. 🕺

Glad found this, I'm been strugling for a long time with depression, bipolarism and anxiety, recently I realised I have adhd, I have had treatment with antidepresants and stuff for bipolarism but all they did was making me feel like a vegetable and feeling nothig so I stoped. While being on that treatment I took a full dose of lsd, but it hit me like 60-70%, no visuals, only if closed my eyes because of medication that stoped the efect, I looked up on the internet about that and there are studies that show that the medication that I was taking are stoping the efect of psichodelics in a 30-60%. Anyway I felit amaysing at the moment but after s couple days all the bad feeling come back. Now I'm off the medications for at least a year and want to start microdosing mushrooms and I will for sure after this video, thanks for giving me confidence. After a copule microdosing I'll try maybe a have or a full dose I feel good to see how it is :))

@@LiamDangerPark I would often get stuck in the negative thought loops that are common with ADHD. I had never been able to recognize when I was in one, and how to take a step back. I recently had a psilocybin experience where I was getting caught in very deep and emotionally intense negative thoughts loops, but while tripping I learned how to recognize poor thought loops and how to step away from them befoer they even start.
I really like in the video on how you explained the default mode network and the task positive network as been linked together on a seesaw. It made me understand the frusturating emotions of having broken seesaw; wanting to get things done, but being quite literally incapable. It's like I realized it's not my fault.

You need to take more than that to have that which means macrodosing once in awhile and plus microdosing would be more usefull. Wish we had clinics in my country. I really do not want to macrodosing because shit can go bad. I have bipolar disorder and having a full blown manic attack would be terrible idea while on drugs which is illegal for usage.

I have researched a lot on the matter and found very few online.
I was wondering which “drug” may be best to help a person through ADHD?
    LSD? MDMA? Mushrooms?
I tried MDMA and it helped a lot… like a looot for me to get over depression.
Maybe different drugs help different patterns?
So I was wondering if you have tried LSD or MDMA as well… and if they had different effects compared to mushrooms and how?
As a student of psychotherapy I am interested in locating the effects of these on ADHD in theory (Jungian) and physical parts of the brain.

Pleaseeee avoid M for treating depression. It feels good on the night, then you come crashing down as you have used ALL your serotonin stores and it takes the brain a month to recover (Comedown). You could lead yourself into worsening depression from this routine. Mushrooms create new neuropathways safely and naturally, with long lasting effects and was the ONLY thing that cured my depression after taking them for 3 months at a micro dose level. Trust me, leave the M alone

When I first discovered psychedelics I took them somewhat regularly (once a month or so) for about a year. During that year I certainly felt a lot happier and never had any depressive or anxious thoughts. But after that year I decided I didn't want to rely on these drugs so I stopped taking them, it's now been about a year since then and my ADD feels worse than it was before, as is the depression and anxiety that often comes along with it.
I fear the psychedelics may have offered a short/medium relief from some of my symptoms but in the long run have somehow made things worse. Or perhaps it just feels that way because I had such a long break from my symptoms

@@AO-yw3gz hey so, I was in the same situation as you so I'll share my experience, hope it helps, I didn't exactly microdose, I bought 10g and ate a bit every now and then, and by the end of each day I felt like I learned a life lesson. I was diagnosed with ADHD but I'm not sure if it's just CPTSD that was messing up my attention, but I'm working on my traumas and feelings and it's been helping a lot too.
Shrooms do improve attention and 'happiness' levels, I just felt like singing and dancing to music and really expressing myself in some days. I'm really feeling like there's just so much repressed stuff and shrooms help you sit with them and process your feelings. Idk, I just felt like I'm safe in my body again, that I could trust it and be okay. But it's a different journey for everyone, even if it does not work the same way for you, it probably will be of value in some way, be curious about how you'll be feeling along the day and enjoy :D

I noticed when I microdose on mushrooms, I suddenly become super organized and start cleaning things up whereas it was hard to do before becuase I felt scattered by the mess. I guess that's an ADHD symptom. I also look at things that I couldn't figure out forever and suddenly realize how to fix them. Do you know much about how mushrooms make one more organized and productive?

I think I have ADHD, coz I tick most of the boxes and whenever I see someone describing their ADHD experience I always relate so much. Forming new patterns is really a tough job, coz we are sort of addicted to constant stimulation. Thank god I left pornography for good on my own, still there are various patterns and tendencies I want to sort out. I always thought psychedelics might help and here you are sharing all these studies. I hope to get mt 1st trip sooonnnn.

Same here, but my stimulation comes in the form of food. I’ve just made the connection that I’ve always been overeating since a child but I just never gained weight because I was active. I used to eat a whole loaf of bread in a day as young as 8 years old. Now I have gained 40 lbs in a couple years and lost it twice, just gained it again. It’s a vicious cycle that I never thought to tie to adhd

    • @ilikepingpong
      @ilikepingpong ปีที่แล้ว +1

I'm in the same situation. The last year in a new job has really highlighted and amplified an issue that I am realizing has been there my whole life. While I work on getting evaluated and diagnosed, I have been able to try different cannabis products (various blends of THC to CBD) and recently tried microdosing magic mushrooms.
I will say that it does increase focus and concentration, BUT ONLY on stimulating activities. So far, I have not been able to improve my ability to (for example) read and write emails, or organize my tasks. So far, I have only fallen deeper into distracting material, like learning something new, listening to music, etc.
But this is my own personal experience. I have other habits that I could improve, such as exercise or meditation, and perhaps the microdosing would be more effective. But I would suggest to proceed with caution. The more I look into it, the more it seems that ADHD stimulant medication might be the only drug that assists ADHD. But there are natural behavioral ways to improve that take much more time and will.
      Best of luck!
EDIT: Using THC/CBD and magic mushrooms has helped lift my mood. So if you struggle with mood, anxiety, depression caused by or along with ADHD, you might be able to improve that aspect as well as reducing stress. But it might not help fuel you to "get things done" that require concentration.

I'd like to play devil's advocate for a second. It feels like these testimonies of psilocybin are basically patching up the gaps of your personality that you're not pleased with.
You wanted to eat healthier you took shrooms and now you eat healthier. He wanted to focus better you took shrooms and now you focus better. You wanted to dance you took shrooms and now you dance.
What am I getting at? I believe that all of those things could be obtained with a sober mind and some discipline. I work as a web developer which requires long periods of concentration and problem solving which is really difficult for me. I throw myself at it and I embrace my demons of lack of concentration. I stared at myself in the mirror and wasn't happy with what I see. I switched to a carnivore diet. I went to a wedding and was embarrassed to dance until the groom called me up and actually danced with me. We look like dorks but we had so much fun. I danced the rest of the night.
I believe that taking psilocybin to change yourself is close to patching up an old tire. Forcing yourself and embracing the pain of reality until you start to see results is like changing the tire entirely. Eventually that patch is going to fail and adding more and more patches to a balding tire is not conducive to long travel.
If you're creative and your concentrate of mind start to fail again, if you're insecurities arise, if you start to eat poorly again the tempting thing to do would be to blame your medicine. Why did it fail? Do I need more?
If a sober mind breaks his discipline the only person he can blame is himself. Yet here's the interesting point. He started by himself so he knows he can do it again.
I'm referring of course to minor disciplines. If this is about addiction to drugs PTSD or repressed memories that is well out of my depth.

    • @LiamDangerPark
      @LiamDangerPark  2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Hey Joe, I love a good devils advocate and appreciate your insights and perspectives.
I guess one of the other things that I think has been valuable about the psilocybin experience is that it reflects to me things about myself that I wouldn’t typically notice. For example, In my conscious mind, I didn’t really admit to myself that I missed dancing or that there was anything wrong with the way I was eating. I didn’t know I wanted to change really.
Also, working with my own ADHD and clients with it, it can be nearly impossible to force yourself into a new thought path alone. One doesn’t need drugs, but some powerful external stimuli I think is necessary (could be an exceptional conversation even).
Especially if the mode you’ve learned and integrated over a lifetime is to force yourself to do something. I have leaned disciplinary practices over the years but they never came from forcing myself, the best ones came from loving myself better, and that also may have had some roots of influence in transcendent psychedelic experiences when I realized experientially that I am part of the all and not some separate being out of harmony.
      Thanks for commenting

Psychadelics shows you things in new perspectives you couldnt see before. Its like someone else telling you what you are doing wrong in a way you can take in, think about, and understand. And on top of that, it lets you feel and accept those things you learn you need to fix. The drug itself, doesnt help you directly. Its still up to you to use discipline at the end of the day to fix the things you dont like. People think psychadelics does all the curing directly, but in actuality its still all you, just a you that realises the things that matter and allows you to place them correctly.

Just to clear a little misconception here.
Neurogenesis (the growth of new neurons) in the brains of adult humans was pretty much debunked lately.
What he is referring to is a momentary boost in neuroplasticity. The existing neurons create more connections between
each other resulting in a thicker prefrontal cortex grey matter density.

Yeah this is somewhat true, but there is some evidence of slight global neurogenesis, but it remains controversial; However, hippocampal neurogenesis is definitely occuring across the lifespan. Additionally the mTor, and BDNF pathways that meditate neuroplasticity and hippocampal neurogenesis are possibly implicated in the impressive rapid antidepressive effects of psilocybin aswell as other rapid acting antidepressants like ketamine

I like what you’re going for in this video but I’d like for you to talk about the micro dosing more. It seems like the only story’s you have about shrooms helping with ADHD is when you had taken larger doses.

I’ve never noticed a significant change on my life from micro dosing, but I’ve also never put in the work to make it a real habit. But from personal experience I have limited insight and I don’t recall stumbling on good research about it that really excited me. Maybe I’ll try again

I want to microdose. I'm on loads of meds if it can treat me I could come off them.
