I love how Phil was smiling like Eddie when he was playing the solo for him. It ends up being a happy tribute, instead of a solemn one had it been recorded today.
Eric Johnson absolutely blew it out of the water. I played back Eric's solo dozen times. He is just a monster player. The way he uses octaves is so sweet sounding. No one sounds like Eric.

Incredible coincidence to have EVH on Stairway to Heaven, but it was like a premonition Rick. This video will remain forever as a tribute to the passing of a great artisan, creator, ultimately innovator talented musician. Hat's down....
Rick captured the essence of Frampton 👍 Phil captured the essence of EVH 👍 Eric was his own sound 👍 ❤️ this concept, so creative, so talented, more like this please!
What is Phil X and Eric Johnson played Eruption? What if Eddie and Eric played 'Show me the way; What if Phil X, Rick and Eric played... The solo to Detroit Rock City... the possibilities are almost endless. More Eric....
Eric's tone is simply unmistakable: melodic, elegant, goosebump-inducing. You can always hear him out among hundreds of guitarists and he doesn't even have to follow the maxim of many guitar heroes, which often follows the motto: faster, shriller, more spectacular. For me it's definitely the best of the three solos.
Can you imagine this video was posted less than 24 hours before Eddie Van Halen entered the true stairway to heaven. Unbelievable. Rip to the legend. And an amazing Job from Phil X
Affirmative, less so on the drums. Admirable attempt but the kit was lacking. No hate for the attempt though. Playing anything that Bonzo did perfectly is a mountain that most folks would simply choose to pass on. The EVH needed some more tapping, harmonics, and a dive bomb or two IMO. Eric Johnson has always made me want to throw my guitars off the Cliffs of Dover as I once again realize how much more I need to improve to possess one scintilla of the skillset Mr. Johnson possesses. Wow! Makes me really miss another TEXAS boy SRV. RIP Stevie! We will never forget you and I am positive the chorus upstairs really appreciates having you blazing through solos playing for the Big Guy! Quite a retinue of players there now but it would have been nice to have had a few more years prior to your far too early exit stage left. Us native Austinites were so blessed with regard to how many times we were treated with your myriad of performances across central Texas that I (for one) took it for granted. I miss those halcyon days of SRV, Eric Johnson, Ian Moore , W.C. Clark, Jesse Taylor, Buddy Guy, the Sexton bro’s.,etc, etc. That was when Austin really was the live music capitol of the world! Those days have faded away like an Aquafest poster or the graffiti on the the little bridge you drive under on Lamar heading towards 6th street. Man, I miss Austin 1975-1990. Thanks for moving away from your shite hole state and changing Austin into the same crap hole you left trying to escape. Yeah California, I’m talking about you!!! But I digress...🥺
So I am recovering from surgery and I was in quite a bit of pain. For 12 minutes I forgot about that. And I am still buzzing from this. One of the coolest things I’ve seen on your channel. Much better than drugs. Thank you!
It's interesting that no matter who is playing my brain still hears Jimmy Page, as if the original notes are so indelible they exist even when they're gone like a phantom limb. I wonder if anybody else had this experience. Fantastic video, Rick.
Yeah , I kinda had this comparison track running through my head throughout all 3... It's indelibly implanted in whatever area of the brain that stores that sort of thing I think...it was a fun little experiment with maybe the most iconic guitar solo ever...I think it's important to note how accurate they got the rhythm track, that in and of itself with the attention to detail, right down to the twelve string fender was remarkable..but like a phantom limb, expounding upon that metaphor the body was so close to the original , that I could hear it too...I wonder if it was tough to overcome that for the 3 guys, to not get dragged out of Frampton and into Page would have taken a certain defiant concentration...I will continue to ignore it, I won't think about it ...tricky to strike the balance I'd Imagine... staying true to the experiment insists that you think about it, but not so much as to forget your playing in the style of whomever you're supposed to be imagining their interpretation might have sounded like... except of course Eric Johnson for obvious reasons lol... overall that's 12 minutes well spent for me, of course I haven't counted the time I'm spending commenting, but I'm finished so Coda if you will☮️
BrotherDevious Let’s face it, Page’s solo has been playing in everyone’s head for 45+ years. So unless you had truly never heard it before, it’s tough to just ignore it. It’s no different than lyrics for songs that you haven’t heard in decades yet still remember when the song is played
Rick, the synchronicity of you putting this out and then the world learning of Eddie’s passing the next day is just over the top. And the song Stairway to Heaven makes it even more significant. This was no mere coincidence, my friend. 2020 . . . It seems this was a perfect inadvertent send off for Eddie. May he Rest In Peace. 🤘🏼
Very, very nice solo Rick. If I closed my eyes and heard you play that solo... I would have thought it was Frampton. You hit his style perfectly. Just as easily as anyone could recognize Carlos Santana guitar sound. 🎸 Very amazing 👏 and profound!
It certainly gives an extra dimension to this video - brilliant! - And there definitely will be some 'less peaceful' guitar solo's from now on in heaven (RIP EVH)
I was stunned by how completely you replicated that backing track. Such an impeccable sound, yet still as if in 1970. That was almost more astonishing to me than the actual solos (any of which are worthy of listening to over and over again so it can all to sink in). Damn.
For sure, such a treat. His music has been on my mind lately so I pulled out a transcription of Dover. Turns out it’s still very much out of my reach, haha.
Okay nevermind that you got stylistically different players playing the solos (including Eric Johnson who made the song sound like one of his with his playing) but the sheer effort of "recreating the backing track" with the electric 12-string shows a herculean effort for this. Bravo all.
If Rick gets this series going, how long before one of the big-name artists calls up and says THAT's not how I would play it, HERE's how I would play it!
@@andrewlorenzlong Are you somehow thinking I'm dissing Eric Johnson? How on earth....???? He's obviously not going to call up because he already played it like he would.
This is probably one of the best videos made, about anything, ever. The dedication to a craft, the respect for the original artist and the passion of the people involved is all so rare. Amazing. Just amazing. Thank you.
That EVH was exactly what Eddie would have done, my goodness. Getting Eric Johnson on board was beyond brilliant. So cool to hear this and observe such high art. Then today, Eddie is gone.
RIP Eddie - the world lost an incredible genius, person, and hero. My heart goes out to his family.....that being said....as much as I love Phil X and Eric Johnson, I liked your solo the best Rick....it fit more with the essence of the song. Great video!

@@RickBeato tnx rick .yes so very not by chance. Another Channel did the same yesterday Oct.5 ""Produce Like A Pro"" title ""Guitarists That Changed Music:: E.V.H"" . thank you i look fwd to your tribute
This was a really worthwhile exercise. All of the imagined solos were good in their own right. Rick's 'Frampton' was obviously the closest to the original in the sense of following the original structure, which I thought was appropriate. The real difference between the solos for me was that in the original you hear Page reacting to the bass and drums, and leaving space for them. That's the big difference between a band, and a star soloist with backing musicians.
Spot on. I liked hearing the different approaches, and maybe it's impossible to unhear Page's solo and think of it as anything other than the "right" approach, but the order of these solos (Frampton, EVH, EJ) made it progressively clearer that Page's solo was very "sympathetic" to the bass, drums, and slide guitar, with some nice give and take between them. On the other extreme, EJ's solo seemed to fight the other instruments. It made for some interesting tension, I guess, but not my cup of tea.
Dude, I was going to say something very similar. Page came up in the Yardbirds. Played frequently with the likes of Clapton, Harrison, and Hendrix... all guys who not only knew how to leave room for other instruments to do their things and add mood to it all, but would write in parts for them. He understood overall structure a bit better than lead guitarists who are essentially the entire band. Beyond this, As Rick states, there are 3 different Page solos. This means he made several takes to get the right one recorded and produced. I doubt any of these 3 did anymore than a a couple of takes, and didn't sit for a day or two listening to every detail while determining the best outcome.
@@smackela Absolutely agree about EJ's solo, though I love his tone and think he's a wonderful player. (People rave about 'Cliffs of Dover', but I think that the next track, 'Desert Rose' actually gives a better insight into what he can do.). The tension was obvious: it sounded as though he was forcing it against the constraints of the form. Phil X, on the other hand, just went for it, and the result was a ton of fun, without necessarily being 'better' than the others.
Yeah, you captured the essence of it. They where all great, but to me Jimmy Pages solo just fits better for me. Might be because that is what I'm used to hear, but man, Jimmy is great.
"how does one create top notch content while simultaneously giving a giant middle finger to copyright trolls? I'm Rick Beato, and I approve this message" 🤘🤘🤘
The middle finger comment is kinda moot since the majority of the proceeds from the ads that you have watched on this here video actually do not go to Rick lol 😂 so in essence those trolls you so kindly speak of are the true winners here
@Jonontoast just listen to your local radio station and think of how many songs and tracks they interrupt with ads in the middle of the music. They don't.
Eric Johnson’s playing is just so pretty. I find it incredibly interesting in the second half of the solo, when the slide guitar part comes in, he didn’t use it as a “call and response” type figure, like Page, Rick and Phil did. Instead, he just soloed over it and really used it to harmonize what he was playing melodically.
Eric Johnson is an absolute monster of a player, bit such a calm and down to earth guy in person. You can tell through his playing that everything he doesn't emote or say outwardly, he says and expresses through his guitar. This was a great video and looking forward to more!
First of all RIP to the great Eddie Van Halen. Hope he's banging away on the strings of his favorite guitar wherever he is now. Rick I can't thank you enough for this video. Attending college in Austin in the early 80's I was blessed to see SRV and Eric J. in tiny venues first then on to greater gigs as their musical careers climbed. I truly think EJ is one of the most under-rated guitar players on the planet by almost everyone who is not a musician, even with him winning a Grammy in 1990. His level of cerebral and passionate playing are nothing short of miraculous and he is truly one of a kind. So to see him included in this video with the likes of Eddie, Jimmy Page and Frampton is refreshing and a tribute to the phenomenal musician he is. Thanks again Rick, this made my week and soothed a bit of the pain that came with losing EVH to cancer. Rock on everyone!
Some hours later, this Eddie style solo has a totally diffrent color, meaning. Thank you gentlemen for this, respect PhilX and, rest in peace Mr Van Halen. 😔
Eric's choice of notes over this backing track and his phrasing are sublime. His solo is highly melodic and really is representative of his style. Brilliant!
Eric's version was so good for all the reasons you just said. I think the 12-srtring kind of disrupted the end of the story Eric's solo was telling, perhaps in a live setting the 12-string wouldn't have done that. I really just wanted to say, I like it.
The sheer joy Phil X exudes as he's holding the Frankenstrat copy and as he's playing is testament to Eddie's power over so many players...it always starts with joy! Your solo was killer, Rick, natch! Eric Johnson...just wow! Those uplifting notes hit the heart. Thank you!
I feel like Rick could have said anything to Phil and he would have said "hell yes!!". :) This was an absolute treat. And yes, i vote for more of these.

The Eddie Van Halen solo literally gave me shivers; sounded just like something Eddie would have done (RIP). And honestly, your solo Rick was spot on to what Frampton might have done too....it was uncanny really. Loved Eric's version of himself too! :-) All in all this was amazing.
@@rgwak I did´nt mean that he was a better than Eric Johnson. But I thought that in these 3 particular solo´s, Rick´s solo sounded better. But I love Eric Johnson and yes I woould agree with you that he´s the better guitarist of the three.
Please do the same for "November Rain" solo! Curious to see ... Nuno Bittencourt and Kiko Loureiro doing their own signature in this song would be something blue sky! Thanks!
This has to be one of the most difficult things to do. Unhear the original and play a version with feeling. Seems like you'd have to compose it first, then learn it.
That was really, really great! But I honestly, actually shouted HOLY S@%& and cried when Eric Johnson took his shot. It was exactly what I expected, pure, silky, melodic precision.
I thought that Eric Johnson's version was the overall best of the three. Simply fantastic. My only surprise is that he didn't play off of the slide guitar, just played through it as if it wasn't there.

All right I got to say this one thing. I think Phil did a good job, however at 8:44 I feel like Eddie would have gone for the higher octave for the tapping. He like to have more space in between his hands and do the taps on the high frets. For me when I listen to Van Halen that's something that's always stuck out.
@@brokeboypokemon7077 Agreed.Phil did a phenomenal job but that is exactly what I was waiting for too. Also more of a split(with all due respect),of the tapping in general.Eddie had a way of doing phase 1 and phase 2 of his tapping that built the climax for the end in which Phil nailed! I have to say it is the best EVH sounding solo Ive seen that was made up solely by the artist. Kudos to Phil.

Thank you, Chris. You took the words right out of my mouth. So cool to see artists coming together in a time of much needed comfort. Art is a gift we give to the world.

@@RickBeato Nice concept. Would like to see a part 2 that would be more radical, various guitarists playing in their own styles
1. Adam Rogers or Julina Lage (great jazz guitarists but who play multiple styles)
2. Charles Caswell of Berried Alive (Highly innovative)
3. Charles Berthoud (bass solo as fluent and melodic as a guitarist)
4. Yvette young (innovative )
5. Sean Angus Watson ( beautifully melodic and toneful)
this could be done with the given backing track or re-made one in different styles of Stairway, jazz version, metal etc or no particular style -open
- or perhaps another classic song not quite as over done as Stairway maybe Heart, "Barracuda", Steely Dan Josie or
Funkadelic - Maggot Brain (this one could also be a What Makes This Song Great? One of the best guitar solos in my opinion )

How true Barbara! ❤️
I'd kill to hear Jimmy's outtakes!

Eric Johnson absolutely blew it out of the water. I played back Eric's solo dozen times. He is just a monster player. The way he uses octaves is so sweet sounding. No one sounds like Eric.

That dude LOVES Van Halen.
Not enough props to you guys who created the backing: it's frickin spot on!
I totally agree. It is SPOT ON!! Beato’s solo was great also. He left the original out of the equation and made it his own (Frampton style).
@@kirkjones-orangutanorlion Beato had the best solo of the three, it fit the song better than the other two solos.
Imagine being so badass you could casually call Eric Johnson for a TH-cam video
And he joins it
All good, but after listening to the three of these I am re-reminded of how EPIC Jimmy Page's solo actually was. Perfection.
I did.
I agree
Totally! These guys are all great players, but Page wrote (and played) such a perfect solo for that tune.

I was stunned by how completely you replicated that backing track. Such an impeccable sound, yet still as if in 1970. That was almost more astonishing to me than the actual solos (any of which are worthy of listening to over and over again so it can all to sink in). Damn.
This 100%, he should show us how to duplicate it lol
Yes oh my Gawd. Rick you are a genius.
Agreed. Jack KILLED it on the drums.

This is my favorite episode to date. Please do more of this!!! Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, and Eric Clapton bring it.
Just heard the news about Eddie Van Halen and immediately thought of this video. What a treasure. May he Rest In Peace.

Very cool... this should be a new series.... I am thinking "Comfortably Numb" or "Sultans of Swing".
Hard to describe in words the beauty of Eric Johnsons playing. His touch, his tone, his approach. Ear candy.

The middle finger comment is kinda moot since the majority of the proceeds from the ads that you have watched on this here video actually do not go to Rick lol 😂 so in essence those trolls you so kindly speak of are the true winners here
@Jonontoast nope, not really.
@Jonontoast it's a Google grab of your money

Also, Rick is a killer guitarist on his own.
Old news... :-D
Yep. And the drumming was bang on the money 💰
There is only one Eric Johnson! Jeez, the musical pathways that he sees with his brain when he is playing a solo...Just incredible.
Emotional is the word i'd choose!
Eric Johnson is an absolute monster of a player, bit such a calm and down to earth guy in person. You can tell through his playing that everything he doesn't emote or say outwardly, he says and expresses through his guitar. This was a great video and looking forward to more!
“So I’m just gonna call Eric Johnson...” strong flex
This whole video is obnoxious. Constant name dropping and ignorance

Forget Eddie's brown tone. Nothing bests that Frampton tone. Bar none.
Thank you!

That’s exactly what I thought. Eric Johnson is “modern?” Only to a boomer like Beato. 😄😄 For real, he ripped though.
The Other Smith I think he meant style-wise, not so blues heavy
His style is very much modern and not traditional like jimmy page
Talking about jimmy page gave me an idea. I wonder how he would have gone about the stairway solo from led zeppelin???
I raised an eyebrow too, Eric Johnson is far from modern at this point.

If u want to remember Eddie and smile - watch the Hot for Teacher vid. It is still dope alllll these years later.
Eddie is smiling in heaven looking down saying: "pretty close Phil"
Phil crushed this. I am rather thoroughly impressed with this effort!
@@mariocampa4647 I highly concur!
@@brokeboypokemon7077 I think he just did too many things from eruption.
This is my favorite video on TH-cam. RIP EVH.
I feel privileged to have been able to watch this. Solos were great but I’ll be honest....just listening to you record the rhythm gave me the goosebumps. The solo is so iconic that each of you could not help but to use choice notes and pieces of licks from the original. Great concept for a video. Look forward to more. Thanks Rick, Phil and Eric for sharing your talent with us.
Look on Rick's face was priceless when he realized he'd slipped in one of Page's original riffs ;)
yeaaahhhhhh :) 06:28
Totally! And thanks for the heads up - I was looking out for it!
Priceless!
the "what this solo would sound like recorded by _______" series is honestly an amazing idea, please keep it going!!
