i ain't gonna lie, as a kid in the early 90s, i remember feelin' anxious being drivin' through parts of richmond to get to the asian markets. It's MUCH better today, or at least the veneer looks much better!
Yeah it became better as the years progressed. A lot of that has to do with the size of it too. Richmond is the smallest mid-sized city of the bay with under 110k population. If you look closely at that, it averaged more than 40 murders per year back in the day and people were getting time from left to right. Add in gentrification which goes for a lot of the bay including Oakland, SF, East Palo Alto, Vallejo, etc the numbers start to drop.
When I was a kid I lived in the rich, saw the streets of the ghetto influenced my life as a ghetto millionaire. 30 years later I go back n look to see of what could of been my life without the streets of the town.

It was actually "nice" for a jail... big couches and big screen tv's,private bathrooms,private shower. almost like a freakin college dorm! but this part got me,they had in the main open area,by showers and bathrooms,a few sinks with mirrors and on the wall next to each one A CURLING IRON... like... how is that a good idea, EVER lol

Born, raised and left except to visit my parents. looks the same though. 1980-1993. It wasn't too bad then, the bay area still had quality jobs for people. Things started looking up when National Park Service moved in. That makes me happy. and We are home to the oldest and most famous park ranger.

Many hoods in California look that way in the day time, however at night it's completely, don't be fooled lol. I was fooled I remember living in Sacramento in nice apartment. I use to work a late night and one night I got off early to go home. I got home at 3am nothing but hookers, pimps, dealers and bangers were outside. I was shocked this was my first time seeing the neighborhood at night 😳
