Regarding the Holocaust survivor's families who are insulted and thrown garbage at, I have this information first hand from prof Ilan Greilsammer (Bar Ilan university, Tel Aviv).
I did some digging to find if there was anything in the press or else. After the war, Holocaust survivors and their families were deemed "weak Jews" to be laughed at by the diaspora, people who didn't do enough to resist at times where Israel was seen as (again, a symbol) the embodiement of strength. This culture has been perpetrated with the younger generations until this day, as Prof Greilsammer mentioned in a lecture that they are called "soaps" and suffer other kinds of abuse.
Here is a list of interesting resources:
THE SECRET SUFFERING OF ISRAEL'S HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS, Washington post
    www.washingtonpost.com/archive/lifestyle/1993/04/23/the-secret-suffering-of-israels-holocaust-survivors/82c1a7ba-3233-4351-b4b8-f7387e291335/
The Seventh Million: The Israelis and the Holocaust by Tom Segev

An adaptation of the book I found on TH-cam:
    th-cam.com/video/sn_Bhe4BCws/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=BennyBrunner
Also, how the State of Israel abuses holocaust survivors:
    www.tabletmag.com/sections/israel-middle-east/articles/israel-abuses-holocaust-survivors
And how the state perceives Holocaust survivors are a financial burden:
    www.haaretz.com/opinion/2013-02-06/ty-article/.premium/amos-rubin-waiting-for-shoah-survivors-to-die/0000017f-f969-d460-afff-fb6ff8540000
    www.jpost.com/opinion/article-729069
And one last thing: if you justify the killing of women and children as necessary or unavoidable, or the hitting of Israeli citizens by negligence, you're no better than terrorists. But thank you for boosting my engagement rates. Every hate comment reshares this video 10 times with the algorithm.

Yes I've heard this before, on history programmes long time ago, that Jews coming from Europe post WW11 , who survived the camps, were often treated with disgust, and told things like, why didn't you fight back...no empathy!?

... I have listened to a part from professor Ilan Greislamer's lecture (the only part I could find was about settlers and the ultra Orthodox, unfortunately i couldn't find his remarks about the holocaust). I found it interesting, can't say I agree about the notion that settlers remind Israelis of the Israeli pioneers (maybe settlers tell it to themselves?). I personally attribute the "tolerance" of the Israeli public towards them to a misunderstanding on his part. Meaning, the public at large doesn't really like the whole settler movement, the largest party in Israel has a primaries system, therefore it is risky politically to go against the movement (and so the politicians rarely do).
In terms of the holocaust I think what is conflated here is what was the attitude towards the survivors at the beginning and what is the attitude towards them now (I heard there was something like that, though I am too young to have experienced it).
I find it hard to believe the attitude towards those who survived was different than it is now (but of course it could have been).
Nowadays, I think most people think that the survivors have gone through horrors unimaginable to any of us, and therefore they are respected.
There is such a wide consensus about it many politicians pride themselves on helping them more than the others (being most of them are very old, the sums of money diverted into that cause get lower with time...).
As for Haaretz, since there is free speech in Israel, they can publish whatever they want, and they do (if they outright lie they can be sued, but usually they find a way to legally mislead). Sometimes the titles are misleading, sometimes they base their op eds on imagined Palestinians (meaning the international polls and the research say one thing, they base it on the opposite). Their articles are used in NYT iirc. They are considered ultra left leaning in Israel (meaning most Israelis can't handle the pro Palestinian, at times pro hamas bias the paper has). This is not to say they are necessarily bad, just to say that when people quote Haaretz as an Israeli paper, most Israelis find it odd, it is probably considered more of anti Israeli paper...

My father told me, about 50 years ago, that I was a “self hating Jew” when I said that Palestinians deserve human rights too.”. He was propagandized to dehumanize Palestinians way back then because their dehumanization was, and is, necessary for the settler colonialist project, still underway. Zionists would say “it was empty land and the Israelis made the desert bloom” sort of thing.

Jews with no homeland, no nationstate,
are weak and 'generally' have to assimilate.
And Jews can assimilate incredibly well.
Alternatively, Jews with a homeland are strong and independent.
They thrust their unapologetic Jewishness in your face.
Non-jews tend to prefer the weak and assimilated variety.
Unfortunately many Western Jews who've accepted weakness and assimilation.
Are annoyed at being confused with those having a strength of conviction in who they are.
To not be 'purely self interested individuals' …but belong,
and want to fight for a homeland.
And how scary that can be,
for those that had to always defend themselves alone.
It is a great internal embarrassment at their inauthenticity,
and an even larger outer embarrassment... with being ‘even remotely',
associated with Jews that own 'authenticity' outright.
The 'weak' are then wheedled into the media spotlight by progressives,
to validate that Israel is a fascist oppressor.
The timid and afraid, being told to oust those with strength,
is as old as time itself.

In 1982 I am a Christian travelling around India with a bunch of Armenians and a Palestinian. I loved the times we spent together. It was hard for the Iranian Armenians as the Ayatollah was making life hard for them. And the Palestinian was nervous about things going bad for his people.
Before the Palestinian left to defend his people back home we had a big argument where he ended with “You know nothing!!”…and he was right. I came from a background of being defensive towards the Jew and their prior traumas.
I am still a Christian 41 years later. Now I look at Matthew 5,1-12 and wonder how Israel could lose itself so terribly. The empathy towards these Muslim brothers and sisters that are sacred souls before them is lost in their blindness.
A Jewish Rabbi leader came out with the same above comment about Israel, and how they have forgotten and lost the path to humanity and God.
I wish I could go back 41 years to that Palestinian and hug him, call him brother, and say Yes, you are right.

My friend yes I do not condone human abuse towar palestenian civilians from the Israel security forces. But I surely can understand why they are wary of palestenian since they were dealing for 75 years of war and terrorism. All of them took them of guards including October 7 attack from Hamas, and any step to prevent or taking out future terrorist in their mind is justify, vas many palestenian believe that terrorism is a form of resistance. Yes any civilian death is a disgrace but you also have to see the total context in order to understand who the real culprit is. The only example in the USA that I can relate what is happening in Gaza is the kike Rittenhouse cases that yes he killed two person but it was in selves defense and the mob narrative find him guilty without even consider the context on why it happens, and as the court stated it was a case of self defense that the three person shots were the one who initiated the attack on him. And likewise Hamas provoked the israelíes lure the to attack them, and setting the civilian to be bombed by the israelíes, by setting their missiles launchers, weapon deposits and command center within or under those civilians infraestructures. Yes Israel pulled the trigger but it was Hamas that provoked Israelis and the one that put the civilian Infront of israelíes bombs...

You are assuming that Palestinians are oppressed - rather than victims of their own poor judgement and criminal leadership. A Palestinian state has been offered them time and time again - from 1947 on, and their refusal to recognize the Jewish people's right (recognized by the League of Nations, UN and every real democracy on earth) to live in peace in their own state and their choice to choose violence and terrorism has prevented them from having one.

“I will make you into a great nation,
 and I will bless you;
I will make your name great,
and you will be a blessing.
I will bless those who bless you,
 and whoever curses you I will curse;
and all peoples on earth
 will be blessed through you.”

      Genesis 15: 18-21
18 On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram and said, “To your descendants I give this land, from the Wadi of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates- 19 the land of the Kenites, Kenizzites, Kadmonites, 20 Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites, 21 Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites.”
Genesis 26:2-5 (promise to Isaac son of Abraham)
2 The Lord appeared to Isaac and said, “Do not go down to Egypt; live in the land where I tell you to live.
3 Stay in this land for a while, and I will be with you and will bless you. For to you and your descendants I will give all these lands and will confirm the oath I swore to your father Abraham.
4 I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and will give them all these lands, and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed,
5 because Abraham obeyed me and did everything I required of him, keeping my commands, my decrees and my instructions.”
Genesis 28:13 (Promise to Jacob son of Isaac)
“There above it stood the Lord, and he said: “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying.”
Exodus 23:31- God talking to Moses
27 “I will send my terror ahead of you and throw into confusion every nation you encounter. I will make all your enemies turn their backs and run. 28 I will send the hornet ahead of you to drive the Hivites, Canaanites and Hittites out of your way. 29 But I will not drive them out in a single year, because the land would become desolate and the wild animals too numerous for you. 30 Little by little I will drive them out before you, until you have increased enough to take possession of the land.
31 “ I will establish your borders from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean Sea, and from the desert to the Euphrates River. I will give into your hands the people who live in the land, and you will drive them out before you. 32 Do not make a covenant with them or with their gods. 33 Do not let them live in your land or they will cause you to sin against me, because the worship of their gods will certainly be a snare to you.”
      Deuteronomy 11:24
Every place where you set your foot will be yours: Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and from the Euphrates River to the Mediterranean Sea.
      Calls for Genocide:
      Ezekiel 9:6
Slaughter the old men, the young men and women, the mothers and children, but do not touch anyone who has the mark. Begin at my sanctuary.” So they began with the old men who were in front of the temple
      Jeremiah 48:10
A curse on anyone who is lax in doing the LORD’s work! A curse on anyone who keeps their sword from bloodshed!
      Joshua 11:10-12
10 At that time Joshua turned back and captured Hazor and put its king to the sword. (Hazor had been the head of all these kingdoms.) 11 Everyone in it they put to the sword. They totally destroyed them, not sparing anyone that breathed, and he burned Hazor itself.
12 Joshua took all these royal cities and their kings and put them to the sword. He totally destroyed them, as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded.
      Ezekiel 9:5-7
“ 5 As I listened, he said to the others, “Follow him through the city and kill, without showing pity or compassion. 6 Slaughter the old men, the young men and women, the mothers and children, but do not touch anyone who has the mark. Begin at my sanctuary.” So they began with the old men who were in front of the temple.
7 Then he said to them, “Defile the temple and fill the courts with the slain. Go!” So they went out and began killing throughout the city. “

Due to the inability of traditional confessions to respond to the current global problems a new religiosity will eventually emerge. But since life is not only existential but also symbolic, it's precisely these great symbols that Democracy can't defeat & abolish & will have to step down before them. *Money, Militarism & Democracy as they form today in Western Civilization are fighting the last & greatest battles against man. Let me pose my question again. How should a country respond when it is attacked by a group that wants to destroy it and murders 1,200 of it’s citizens and foreign workers and takes hostages. Hamas knew very well that Israel would respond with bombing. That’s what they intended. They built tunnels to protect themselves and nothing to protect ordinary Gazans. They also knew that they could count on ignorance and latent antisemitism to turn public opinion against Israel. Nobody protested the humanitarian catastrophe that resulted from the Saudi war against the Houthis nor against the ethnic cleansing of the Rohingyas. Only when Israel tries to destroy an organization that tries to destroy it do we see massive demonstrations in Western capitals. I think you're missing plenty of things, some claims in this video are false, for example Israel gets no money anymore, it gets credits for weapons and you're seeing Israel as a collective.
Regarding the war it's not about lack of empathy or compassion, I never saw anyone giving the reasons you're assigning to them.
The problem is that Hamas is an obstacle for peace. Pretty much everyone hates this operation. It's not as if no Israeli dies and most people agree that as few Palestineans as possible should die despite them hating Jews and Israelis, to a point where they celebrate them dying.
Which is why plenty of measures are taken for limiting civilian casualties!
But the problems right now are Hamas and that there are still hostages.
Hamas and Palestinean Islamic Jihad constantly launch rockets towards Israel, of which thousands hit Gaza and always prepares the next attack.
In addition to that it oppresses those who are against it. While there are many Palestineans in full support of October 7th, there are also many who can't say what they really think.
But many who celebrate it and hate Jews are simply indoctrinated.
And where's the empathy for the Jews? No Jew on any campus should live in fear! But on the "anti Israel" protest there are active calls for killing Jews! But "It's depending on the context" wether that's fine or not! How can you defend murdering an innocent person in ANY context?
And why are most hate crimes targeting Jews?
Where's the empathy for the Israelis? Don't they deserve it too? No one says anything about Ocober 7th or says that it doesn't justify this operation.
It's worse than 9/11 for them, because it's a small country and nearly everyone had a connection to those who are affected. 100s of thousands are are also internally displaced.
The US started a war lasting over 20 years after 9/11! Most people in Afghanistan don't even hate the USA and were completely innocent civilians!
Just as a comparison what another country with a strong military did after such a massive terror attack.
Heck the protesters even ask for the expulsion and murder of all Jews from Israel! That's what "Free Palestine" stands for. Where's the empathy? Or aren't Jews deserving that?
Regarding the casualties I say that every single death of a more or less innocent person is a tragedy!
However we need to see that the number is pure propaganda. It comes from Hamas and on top of that it doesn't differ between legitimate targets and civilians.
But at the end of the day the number does not really matter.
What matters is that Israel tries to keep it as low as possible! And against all the claims Israel does A LOT for reaching that goal!
I mean the Hamas is DISSAPOINTED over the "low amount of casualties" amongst Palestineans! Their goal is to maximize them!
But civilians are dying in wars, especially when they are forced to stay in the warzone. That's not unique to Israel.
Where's the empathy for all the other wars in the middle east? Where's the empathy for the Kurds? Where's the empathy for the Yazidi?
And I think some things are a sign of less, not more, empathy.
For example asking for a ceasefire. That would lead to more suffering and death in the long run!
Both amongst the Israelis, especially the hostages, but I guess they are mostly Jews, so they don't matter, but also the Palestineans! If Hamas stays, they will keep on being indoctrinated into hateful humans and everyone who doesn't follow will be punished for it!
And Hamas will attack again! Israelis will die, but they don't matter and Palestineans will die too!
In which way is a ceasefire helping anyone, but Hamas?
Regarding the refugees it depends who you're asking. The problem is not the lack of empathy, the problem is that many are not good people.
They want to push Islam, which is an incredibly hateful and oppressive ideology, onto us! They are incredibly ungrateful!
Not wanting these types of refugees has nothing to do with lack of empathy!
And why is there no empathy for the Christians in the middle east? There are regular progroms! Why does no one take those in?
Oh and then there are the Jews, but they don't matter and most _were_ already murdered or expelled and had to flee to Israel!

This is not about Hamas and the IDF. It's about ordinary people justifying blindly the killing of civilians. Whether they are Palestinian or Israeli. I think it's hard to judge this based on one incident. Yes, it's a problem, but we don't know all the details.
But it isn't very clear cut, because it happened after a battle. And hesitating in close-quarters combat can cost a fighter his or her life.
Regarding "blindly killing civilians" I don't see how that is doctrine. Even if you'd take the Hamas numbers and count every casualty as a civilian you'd end up with less than 1% of the population. A population which is not allowed to flee, both due to the limited space and due to causing trouble in the past. Every Arab country supports Palestineans.
      From a distance.
Egypt could easily save all internally displaced refugees. Did you ever ask yourself why they don't?
Regarding the doctrine the opposite is true. Civilians are a reason to _not_ engage and to perform risky operations.
Are civilian casualties acceptable? Yes, they are. When the casualties not too high, while the value of the target is high it's normal to attack a target. It sucks, but that's the case for pretty much every military.
Did you ever ask yourself why Israel did _not_ bomb Al Shifa? Did you ever ask yourself why they're using Caterpillar D9s instead of just bunker busters? Did you ever ask yourself why they don't carpet bomb?
That's why. It's simply not true that Israel targets civilians.
Of course it can't be ruled out that war crimes are commited and I saw at least one war crime, which showed lack of discipline (trashing of the store of a Palestinean for no reason), but I don't think you can say that the whole IDF is like that based on this. I mean you don't say that all Palestineans would commit the crimes of October 7th, when given the chance, either. I think too many would, but that's besides the point.
However all this is just the Israel portion of the problem. It ignores a lot of misdeeds which are happening in the middle east, for which next to no empathy is shown.
It also ignores the situation of the Jews who don't have anything to do with Israel and the fact that even prior to this most hate crimes targeted Jews.
I mean there are even college presidents defended, who fail to say that calling for the murder of Jews is "harrassment".
No one like that should be defended. No matter wether center, left or right.
I think at the end of the day this is an effect of Qatari money though.

They just articulate their own point of view and shout over anyone else disagreeing with them. It's never a true discussion where both sides can rationally make a point. I have witnessed such arguments between narcissistic people who are only interested in winning and not resolving an issue whether its political or personal. And their greatest ploy is to reduce any kind of rationalism to pure emotionalism by employing unsubstantiated allegations, citing unproved atrocities and outright lies to gain the upper hand. He said that all of my arguments concerning the war don’t accept the fact that Israel is a „Schutzstaat“. I then told him that if a Schutzstaat could ever exist, it would need to protect ALL its citizens the same way and not deny some people streets, forcing them though checkpoints, deny access to parts of city’s and in the worst cases even food and water. He did not respond to that ever since. So basically yes, I agree. Not everyone is unkind. Mom taught their children when she was in college. (1950’s) the US wrecked less powerful countries, established military “bases.” In our name. In the name of Democracy. Promoting fear of socialism, communism. Still, despite our hostility, terrorised, displaced people from these very countries come here hoping for a life of peace. I have sponsored a refugee family in the 1980’s. Tutored another family in English (the Western New York dialect.) The rhetoric is that we are overwhelmed with refugees. Yet we are sparsely populated. Many of us DO have room in our hearts to welcome the dispossessed. Personal interaction with the “other” humanises them. Listening creates understanding, sympathy, and a road to solutions. Worldwide, millions of people are influencing governments and public discourse supporting Palestine, permanent ceasefire, rebuilding people’s lives, and a road to hope. I am ashamed that my government is killing Palestinians. I feel helpless on the sidelines. Yet, I will speak my heart to everyone. My Palestinian flag 🇵🇸 arrived in the mail yesterday. If or when the interests of the dominant class requires a change of mass opinion, the people will change their opinions accordingly. Despite the worldwide protests and outpouring of criticism of Israel's actions and policies, the majority opinion, particularly in the US-dominated West, is pro-Israel and views all Palestinians primarily as terrorists.
This is why I believe that the current slaughter in Gaza will just blow over and become the 'new normal'. It's simply not in the US interest to let go of Israel, as it's too strategically important. The Western media (the megaphone of US hegemony) is already losing interest. I can't remember the last time I saw a Gaza story on the front pages. Weeks ago, it was a major talking point at social events I attended. Now, it's never even mentioned.
