      Bees really are! There is a LOT to learn about them, and a lot to go wrong. It's kind of enjoyable, but a lot of effort too.

      Glad you enjoyed it. It's interesting how those bee hives are almost like one living thing, instead of a whole bunch of separate bees. They work together as one.

    If you have single eggs at the bottom of a cell, you have a queen. I don't need to see her. We took around 30 pounds of honey from our first hive last week. The bees made most of that in just around 6 weeks. Good luck!

    Put ya out a swarm box with some lemon grass oil in it. Might get lucky & start a new hive.

    Interesting critters but why don't they sting? Is that what the smoke is for?
    Happy Father's Day Gary!

    • @MuskratOutdoors
      @MuskratOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Honey bees aren't as aggressive as people think. Most times, we don't get stung, in fact so far, we haven't at all with this hive. The smoke, for some strange reason, calms bees? We us, it's the opposite! If we smell smoke in our house, we panic!

    Based on performance relative to the summer solstice, that bee hive is looking very good. I haven't even started seeing hornet nests around here yet... meanwhile, I can't wait for the days to grow shorter. The other considerable variable is the fertilization factor from that huge wildfire you guys had last year which tends to contribute to more flower growth which ultimately leads to more pollen. More importantly, I hope you find the queen, she's probably somewhere in there.

    • @MuskratOutdoors
      @MuskratOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว

      It has been a good year for the flowers. That was part of the problem when we lost the last hive. It was too rainy and windy when the dandelions were out for the bees to fly, then it got hot and dry. Not much pollen for them. Hornets were terrible that year too, and neighboring bees robbed our hive. Lots of things went wrong that year.....We should have gone through that upper box all the way. I bet she was in there....I hope! I need to find my magnifying glass...the eggs are too small for me to see them without it.....I used to have good eyes.......I miss that!

  • @reginaldwinsor2759
    @reginaldwinsor2759 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am no expert but isn't splitting a hive a natural way of bees establishing new colonies & it is an indication of a healthy hive. Have you ever retrieved a swarm.

    • @MuskratOutdoors
      @MuskratOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว

      It is. They can make a new queen if one is lost. We haven't had good luck with that though. In the past, we have bought queens, and made splits. From our first hive, we had 5 hives over several years time, but then one at a time we lost them....I've never caught a swarm. Last year, I heard of one in a guy's outhouse, but someone else beat us to it.
