    I saw this film this afternoon...im still thinking about it. I thought this was a really beautiful poetic film. David Lowery really understands images and manages to make them overwhelmingly cinematic without much happening. We need more directors like him. Brilliant film, my favorite of 2017 so far

    It's was the only real film that moved me and made me think in very long time. One of the most interesting thought driven films I ever watched. When the movie ended I just sat quietly for a while just meditating on the feels the film gave me. The Director truly understand human nature, be very interesting to see him make a horror film, it could be mentally terrifying.

    i got overwhelmed by this movie, the song is just fiiting into it.
    left me speechless from the begining to the end powerless just staring at the screen.
    i won't forget this movie

    The film is a masterpiece A real work of art.
    I've only watched it once. Its a hard film for me to watch again, due to the experience. I listen to the main song now and then and I flood into tears, as it takes me straight back to the film. So Ive never been brave enough to watch it again. Its not because its sad, but its metaphysical journey that can take its toll.

    A Ghost Story is a romance story for the intellectual, philosophical cosmonaut. A philosophical statement on love, life, loss, and meaning.

    I think the sheet is a cinematic device meant to make the ghost visible to the audience. The ghost is invisible to the characters in the film so the sheet is not literal but plays to our cultural tropes and oddly the sheets which are used in morgues. Very clever.

    I could be projecting my own thoughts and beliefs onto this film, but there were many attributes of this movie that really stuck with me. One scene, the one with the most dialoge, was of a guy at a party word vomiting his philosophical views onto everyone. Much of his speech was directly taken from Friedrich Nietzsche's philosophy of nihilism. Also, in one scene the ghost knocks the books off the shelf and one of the books was clearly a Nietzsche book. Just wondering if you think the movie was heavily influenced in this way?

  • @dkarras

    Finally got around to watching this one & loved it. The only part I found aggravatingly long was the infamous pie scene.
    But something that really struck me was the DESIGN (of all things) of the sheet(s). It was gorgeous and conveyed so much w/ so little. The pleats & folds, they way it fell and moved. It’s beautiful. It’s simplicity enables us to project whatever we are feeling on it. It’s such a simple but powerful thing that can be easily overlooked but so important to making this beautiful film work.

    He must have REALLY wanted to know what that note said. He waited around for 156 years, just chillin', roamin the streets, watching hundreds of thousands of other beautiful ladies come and go. Never took to any of them or fell in love with anyone else. All that waiting. All that time. All that patience. Just to read that homemade fortune cookie his wife hid in the wall. That takes commitment

    on second viewing i found the party guy's monologue really compelling honestly. i thought it was going to be really annoying rewatching it, but i was so in the big questions that the film presents that i was just loving his rambling about how thoroughly futile the concepts of time and legacy are

  • @terencole1854
    @terencole1854 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think the note said “NOTHING”. Earlier in the movie she explained that she would write notes everytime she moved & hide them so that if she ever returned she would remember why she loved the place. She actually hated living there and wanted to move away, he loved the house and didn’t want to move. So when he read the words “NOTHING” his reason for staying was over. Or it said “Rest in Peace”. What do you think?

    • @ImpressionBlend
      @ImpressionBlend  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know people have tried to ask Rooney Mara what she wrote, but she says she doesn't remember-she wrote something she decided on in that moment. She also says that even if she DID remember she wouldn't say lol

    Andrew HarrisI just watched this movie tonight, and boy did I love it. What a great, ORIGINAL, beautiful, and beautifully moving film. I have NEVER seen another film like this one. I think the only other film that comes somewhat close to this is Personal Shopper, which I liked very much as well, but this was MUCH better. I highly recommend this, if you have a very open mind when it comes to films.4

      +Impression Blend It's a gorgeus movie, but it is slow paced as well and full of imagery and dreamlike concepts. It also deals with the meaning of life, death and trascendence.

    I feel that this movie is my cup of tea. I tend to like movies that not much happens lol I recommend Paterson for that type of movie. Interesting that I read Rooney Mara never eaten pie before filming the scene. I find it odd someone never eaten a pie before unless you're a small child.
    Update: I watched it an hour after watching Marianna's review. I loved it but completely agree this movie is not for everyone ( two people walked out after 20 mins ) im going to need some time to process it that's for sure.

    Liked and subscribed. The monologue is from William Oldham he's a musician known as Bonnie Prince Billy. I don't think there was too much to read into his monologue, the scene works as a kind of intermission and emotional release to segue into the surrealism of the third act.

    I get the feeling that sometimes directors troll their audience with these kind of movies though I'm sure it's not the case haha. I don't think they'll show it in my country but since it is getting great reviews I'll get around it someday. I heard the song you mentioned and it's great! If you liked the song out of the context of the movie, I would recommend Vancouver Sleep Clinic's album "Winter". Ben Howard's "Every Kingdom" starts great but gets more personal towards the end and Sufjan Stevens' "Carrie & Lowell" is also great. I'm fanboying at this point but sometimes we need to listen to music that makes us feel stuff haha, pop music tends to be really hollow nowadays. With these albums I get the feel that I'm kind of listening to someone's private recordings, like you mentioned with the movie, especially with Stevens.

    Saw the movie and was compelled to watch it a second time. My only issues were the dialog, Casey Affleck high pitched voice, not sure if it was intentional for the movie, had to use CC to understand what was being said. Also the bald dude ranting was a bit much, reminds me of an old boss who looked similar and would pontificate the same way. I'd highly recommend, however anyone going through any type of depression it could trigger some issues especially when the house was being demolished.

    I liked it, maybe need to think about it before deciding if I love it. Leaving many things for the audience to decipher is clever but also a bit lazy when there is no proper explaination. I am referring to the note, what did it say and why is it that whatever it says dosent matter but it manages to free C from the eternal circle? Obviously the attachment is to the house but retrieving the note M writing to herself shouldn't affect Cs journey, then his attachment becomes to the note and hence M and not the house. That ending just seemed a bit sleazy attempt at looking clever

    This was actually my favourite film of 2017 and I was sad to see it wasn't oscar nominated but kinda get it too. I kinda think it did what Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain aspired to be which is one of my all time favourite films but on a lower budget, tonally consistent, and kinda more everyday-ish. It's nice to see that other people appreciate a film like this where much like The Fountain, I feel like I mostly only see people who so adamantly and so ironically, pretentiously, crucify it as being pretentious and a garbage movie, waste of money and time. I also really liked the little detail of the scene where the ghost is upset and throws the books that there is a copy of Nietzsche which I think kind of acts as a safeguard against people saying that the time repeat in A Ghost Story doesn't make sense.

    I think it's an interesting and unique way in telling a story. Even though I haven't seen the movie, I think it'll effect me in a way that few movies have. I know it'll start me thinking about my mother, who I miss very much so. 😯😯😯

      Yup, I'm sure it will have a strong emotional effect on you then. Let me know what you think after you watch it!

      Well Marianna, I saw it over the weekend and it's the second movie to make me cry (The Elephant Man was the first). I"ll give David Lowery credit , he's told a very powerful story about grief and a person ability or inability to move on. I was thinking about my mother, who passed several ago, while watching this movie and imagining her, doing the same thing but making sure her 'Baby Huey' was OK.

    As a movie lover have you ever
    thought of making a film like a short film just for your own amusement ?

      Never in any kind of serious way where I actually tried. I've considered it, sure, but nothing beyond "what if"

    You should spell 'V A L A K' on your shelf, for subscriber/viewer 'impact'.
    hehe
    P.S. This movie made me cry, because of the sheer loss that the "character" goes through..

    A great film. I agree with this review, for the most part. The movie lags in the first half. But I did not object to the philosophical monologue.
