    Thank you Susan. Two weeks ago my dog and I were attacked by 2 street dogs. I was on my scooter ( I am mobility disabled) with Buki on my left side. A passing car scared the dogs away but I was traumatized. Today on our walk we passed 3 street dogs but I had pepper spray with me and this raised my confidence. I am in Home School your dog and this course has taught me so much. My neighbors are AMAZED how much Buki has changed in the past 2 months.

    You do not even know how much these videos have been helping me with my almost 10 month old Australian Shepherd /poodle mix puppy. Queuing into her behavior has helped me separate her 'fear/anxiety' response to new humans, and her overarousal at seeing new dogs. Initially I lumped them together as reactive, but one is truly excitement, over arousal and immature self control, the other is anxiety and fear. Taking two different approaches to working with these, we have made so much progress! Thank you! ❤

    Thank you Susan. As always, what a brilliant podcast. I had so many AHA! moments while watching that I immediately got so many ideas on how to improve my dogs reactivity. Every time I see a dog that I think my dog may be reactive towards in a rather close space with no quick exit, I slow down and/or even turn my back to the other dog to shield my dog and nervously get in my treat pouch. On the other hand, when I walk my dog when there is a bit more space and potentially room to make an exit, I let my dog recognize the oncoming dog, click and treat. It makes him more relaxed, like with the "Look at that" game, knowing there is something approaching. He then is able to focus on me and I can give him cookies for the focus and not reacting towards the other dog.

    We are a zero kibble feeder. Our rescue Shepherd/Mali only eats raw. We rotate all foods, add leafy greens and I feed home grown sprouts. I study canine nutrition and took my dog from stressed to extremely low key and affectionate. Raw with knowledge changed his life.

      I feed raw as well. Pastured, organic, grass fed, but always wondering if I can improve. Which sources do you use for guidance on vegetables and ratios of meat to veggies. Do you use fruit? How much is too much? My pups are 8 and 13 lbs so everything seems like a lot. I would love any info you can pass along. I hope I’m not breaking any rules. 🫶

    • @jannellmeagher638
      @jannellmeagher638 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @deborah1012 I feed very little fruit. Berries are perfect. Fruit feeds yeast if too much is given. I grow all my own organic sprouts from seed. After 3-5 days I incorporate them into meals. Vegetables are not high in the nutrients like sprouts. Sprouts are 20-100 times more. Only jars, water and seeds are needed. Check out any video from Doug Evans. Changed my life and our dogs. Allergies are done! I feed up to 25% veg. We rotate all organ meats. 5-10%

    This all makes so much sense! I was seeing some of the symptoms This! had in my 12 month old puppy and decided to replace a quarter of each raw meal with “veggie smoothie”. I see so much of a difference! It’s amazing! I also totally agree with energetics/emotion part. My puppy pretty much exactly mimics where ever I am feeling, down to breathing pattern. I was walking him the other day after a long stressful day and he was acting super anxious for no apparent reason. His tail was tucked and his hackles were raised. I rarely see him that scared(and I’m rarely that stressed.) I just stopped a took a deep breath and from 6 feet away from me(on a long line) he spun around and stared at me. I acted relaxed and spoke to him confidently and he visibly relaxed. I love to do mindful breathing and meditation with him, even though it sound silly!😂❤

    This is excellent. With my first Beardie, I decided to jump into the show ring. He was my first show dog & I underestimated my ring nerves. They went straight down the lead to my dog. He, sensing my anxiety, became MORE of a clown, as that's a Beardie thing. They're natural clowns & love to have fun. He was trying to make me laugh by acting like a clown in the show ring. Bless his heart. It locked us into a bad loop of me being anxious & him being a clown and because I knew he was going to act up, it made me even more anxious. I ended up handing him off to a handler to finish him. 😞 I worked on myself & by the next show dog I no longer had my ring nerves. They definitely feed off our energy.

    I adopted a rescue dog (female cocker spaniel) that is approximately 4years old this past June. She is very fearful & a runner. She is more afraid of my husband than me but still runs away when it’s time to go for a walk (which she loves) or just to go in the backyard to do her business. I think she at first was not comfortable on grass but is much better. She lets me love on her & is very well behaved (except for potty training but improving) and not aggressive. I’ve only heard her bark twice since we got her so she’s very quiet. You’ve given me something to consider regarding her food & treats. Since she is friendly with other dogs & cats I’m considering taking her to a doggy daycare so she can learn how to be a dog.
    Any recommendations you can offer are welcome.

    Thanks for posting on this topic! A couple things…
    1. Kim… I have found out that a fear of heights can actually be genetic, meaning it’s just how some people are wired. It has more to do with proprioception and then vertigo. A lot of people afraid of heights have a hard time stabilizing when there is no horizon, so she had the right idea by blocking the view.
    2. I rescued a mini poodle mix 6mo. ago. I had to get him completely shaved and it has really opened my eyes to his anxiety postures bc I can actually see his body and feel him when he shakes, when before I couldn’t sense those things bc of all his floof.
    3. What is your take on SSRI for dogs? Especially rescue dogs that one may not know there past & if they’re older it may be harder to train fear out of them with behavioral modifications alone?

    I'm with Kim on heights -- I would have been hard pressed to walk that bridge. Getting yourself under control is so important...and sometimes rising to the occasion for their benefit can help you too. Also, I found the watermelon study very interesting -- who knew that a fear can persist for generations. Looking forward to Part II. 🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪

    I had an incident in my yard with my dog Roxy
    A dog was loose in the next yard
    then it started walking along the sidewalk to come see me and Roxy Being cautious of how Roxy would react i said No in a confident way not yelling, and the dog went back into the yard next door- i felt bad because I would have loved to pet that dog but I was amazed that the dog listened to me 😊

    ❤ Excellent ! Makes me more aware of how I or the influence of others and the environment could be affecting my dog. Can’t wait for part 2! I feel for Kim! I have a fear of heights and I can feel like I’m swaying and going to fall even sitting in a balcony at the theatre! My rate was racing when I saw her on the bridge. Huge high five for her to face her fear and walk it!
    Three weeks ago, we switched to giving our boy a balanced raw diet with the proper supplementation. What a difference, like you have stated, overnight! After three weeks, he has been able to chill out on the floor during down time for the first time. Yay. Others have noticed too. I’m also thrilled as I can now play more games with a higher success rate (had to stop because of being overly nippy and not focused); he’s more attentive and agreeable! Over arousal has been an ongoing issue. It’s been better with the raw diet, but it can rear its ugly head! At first I was overwhelmed with learning nutrition but then I found a company in Ontario Canada… Big Country Raw that carry’s all lines of raw for however you want to feed your fur baby. Complete with balanced diets and supplements, IF required. It was such a time saver and it only costs about $50/mo more if I choose the less expensive protein options. It’s up to the person how much they want to spend on more rare proteins like Kangaroo and Bison etc Just wanted to share that option to others who may feel overwhelmed too.
    More on over arousal would be greatly appreciated! Thank You for all you do Susan and Team!

    This is very interesting! My miniature poodle is sound sensitive. We've been able to work through most of his thunder fear with playing and tugging. He can run agility with thunder, no problem. However, I can't seem to work through his fear of air brake noises from trucks and big rv's. This is a big problem trying to potty him on the side of the road and at truck stops or rest stops. I can't seem to make progress with this, and I would love some insight on how to help him cope.

    Curious as to the impact of 9 weeks of high progesterone with each heat cycle. I've been told that they can become more hyper aware of the environment, protective of toys and even locations with each heat. Generally more crabby. Currently have a 9.5 year old girl who is intact and she struggles with this with each cycle. (She won't be spayed due to heart issue) Thanks.

    • @DogsThat
      @DogsThat  ปีที่แล้ว

      All bitches react slightly different during their heat cycle. I believe any “crabbiness” you will see is more related to the high levels of FSH and LH rather than progesterone. Either way, expect your girl to sail through without an issue, but be prepared to help her (as a nutritionist or herbalist about organic raspberry leaf) if you see a change of personality.

    Can anyone help me!? I have a beautiful Siberian husky her name is Nova, I have her 3 years she came to me from a crappy home, I believe she had been there 6 months max. She had been in one other home before that😔 I will never understand how or why she was not treasured, Loved & cared for from the minute she was brought home to her first home. However she is home now with me.
    So my concern is that I feel as though she shows signs of anxiety/sadness, and I can't think of a single thing that I can do that I am not already doing for her😢, however I obviously have missed something or have something wrong and I hope someone might know... She will be in great form for hours and then her ears might go back her eyes look sad and she will lick her lips, she will look at me and sit with me so I am so unsure 🤔😔🙏🤞
