As a balanced trainer, I agree 100% with you that subscribers don't indicate proficiency. I could, but I won't, name a positive-only, force-free (although that term in itself is a lie) trainer that is WILDLY popular and has 20 times your subscriber base, and he is nearly useless and is leading SO many people estray. It makes me so ANGRY. There is another with a huge number of subscribers that is FANTASTIC. There is another with a similar subscriber base to yours that is my hero. I really like your content. Wow! Tried this!! I'm out of pocket!! As far as lying down is concerned, this confused the heck out of her!! And she thinks the sit and down cues are also recall cues, no distance downs except with a hand up. We have a lot of work to do. Susan, I agree and understand your theory, I am struggling with repeating the behaviors in all the different environments. Environments. For example, recall. Do short distance recall with no distractions but I am not getting the same behavior on long distance. Recall with distractions. How do I overcome these obstacles?
hello, my 6 years old rescue dog still has some issues with people. as a stray dog, she was beaten by people and she was very fearful when we took her in, her way to keep her safe was to bark and lunge. She even bit once a man's ankle who approached her cottage too much (before we adopted her). we worked hard with her to build confidence and keep her safe. She is on a leash in public and wears a head holder. we played many games for brain and sports. The COVID time wasn't useful for socializing with people, so her fears are still there. she likes hiking and there are no problems with people on the walk, runners, bikers, or skaters (we desensitized her for more than 2 years of proofing). now we can talk with strangers on the road but we are not confident to go to a restaurant or crowded area and have her relaxed. Rarely there are lunges to a person or other for no obvious reason. what can I do more to reach the point of taking off the head holder? unfortunately, we are living in an area where the neighbors are not interested in helping her as part of the exercises. on the walk, she rarely accepts treats, or toys at all, but she responds to cues. only if the person is extremely unpleasant from her point of view she lunges once (on a short leash there is no danger) and then she is ok. more like a bad habit than an aggressivity due to fear. most of the time she prefers to find something really interesting in the grass instead of looking at the trigger. this is desirable and better but I prefer to help her be not triggered as long as she is with us. She is confident but not relaxed all the time. unfortunately, she was labeled as anxious and was not allowed to learn agility. we play games agility-like but is not the same. thank you for your advice. Cues. Consistency. Yeah. I am consistent. My husband says, "Oh, that's okay...." which how my Beagle learned to door dart. Because my husband absolutely will not insist on consistency.

I'm late to this video but the 5Ps is *exactly* what I need to do to *efficiently* get my 2yr old Aussie x Maremma to internalize her basic training as thoroughly as I want her to be able to exhibit. I've been struggling to find a way to teach her to respond consistently in "odd" situations and it hadn't occurred to me to plan training sessions this way. Pretty sure it's the fast-track way to break through to the next layer of understanding for her! And it's such an easy training exercise to incorporate!
I also appreciate SO MUCH the way you talk about accountability - to yourself, and to your dog - and that you bring it up again and again through your videos. Yourself and McCann Dogs pointed me in the right direction in regards to that before I even brought my dog home 2yrs ago (which is part of what made me incredibly excited to train a dog - it flipped all the bad feelings I had about failure on its head), but I think it's your specific commitment to getting owners to shift their mindset that's helped me explain what I'm doing to other people (family, neighbours, friends) when they think I need help or advice based on their old school views of dog training. Speaking of "efficiency of training/fast-track training," lol, your ongoing discussion of accountability helps me fast-track explaining to people in my life why I'm uninterested in taking their advice. I mean, I don't put it in blunt/confrontational ways like "I'm uninterested in taking your advice" lol but you gave me the vocabulary I was missing to reduce how frustrating I was finding those interactions to be.

I was surprised this morning that my 5 mo old puppy (aussie shepherd) headed for the front door from the end of the front field when I told him to "go get Sophie"(my black lab). He seems to grasp sentences not just one word cues. He sat for his food by watching Sophie do it the 2nd night he was at my home from the breeder. Thought it a flook but he kept doing it so use that to teach him that was a "sit"

8:40 and just last night my husband was stomping through our house screaming at our dogs “Who did this when he found a pee spot on our living room carpet. And tells me he’s done with the dogs. He thinks he knows more about dogs than the professionals. I really love my dogs and my husband is threatening to “get rid” of the dog and I don’t have anyplace to go. I’m desperate. I don’t want to get rid of 1,000.00 dogs

I cant wait to try working with my dogs to do these commands without hand signals. My tainer had us use hand signals to learn stay and sit. I already know when I ask my one dog to sit she wont until I move my hand for her to do so and actually I do find that kind of annoying. Thank you for your videos!

Question, do you need to train the specific cue in every position and environment or do you think that it will spill over to other cues if you train some? I’m thinking training tricks are easier to train inside with 5 Ps, but will that training transfer to for instance recall or stop to flush (gundogs)?

I have a 5 month old Shepherd/blue healer mix (from what I can tell) I have been trying to train him to come for 2 months now times a day and he still does not get it all the time along with relentlessly bullying my golden I am ata loss and feel like a failure what can I do to help him. I am 67 and have trained a lot of puppies in my lifetime but this one is a challenge I have singed up for for life I love him so much.

I don’t know, I think RASH might sell better..lol..I’ve realized even before this vid my dog is getting away with a lot of blending of responses just because he’s hungry and wants to get to the food as fast as possible, (use his kibble at mealtimes for training) so he runs through another one if I’m not fast enough with the reward.
14:21 how do you recommend moving away from touring? He’s only 5 months and would love to move away!
When do you start to feel like your dog could do a trained behavior "anywhere"? Obviously if your dog has never been in an airport then we wouldn't expect 100% understanding, but how long will it take to build a generalized behavior in pretty much any normal city park? Maybe how long is the wrong question, but it's the natural one. Maybe my real question is how do you know they are ready? What does your bank statement look like when you feel comfortable walking your dog off leash on a hiking trail? I ask because I often think I have more in my bank account than I really do (not on hiking trails! Even just in my backyard). I can read the bank account when my dog hands it to me (fails to recall), but otherwise I feel like I'm a bad judge at guessing what my bank statement really looks like.
I've been thinking about this a bit. I think the answer is that you don't know how much is in your bank account, which is why incremental progress is so important. Can I afford something worth $1? How about $2? And you just keep working up until you know how much you've got. Once you figure out where you are at, you have to put more in the bank to make that value go up, but you still can't see the balance so you have to keep moving slowly.
Have a 14 week old puppy that I am training myself. Second dog. I have always used bribery and want to get away from that. What are some reinforcements that we can use after a behavior? Or are training treats still a valid option? However I can already tell he only tends to listen to me if I have my training treat pouch on or he knows I have treats on me somewhere. He does listen pretty well inside the house for 6/10 times though. Outside... not so much.

So, when I want her to come in the house, she takes off. I got her used to leasing, but I don't want to go out with her right away she takes off. What do I do to get her to stay in the yard?
we love you susan garrett. the only time we fail with sit (hovering bum) and especially lie down is in the rain or when the ground is very wet. should we work this or is it reasonable not to make him? :)
I think it’s always fun to work on a challenge but when you use the phrase “make him” do it I want to share with you that the way I “make” my dogs do anything they don’t want to do is by making it so outrageously fun for them there’s no way they wouldn’t want to do it.
@@RaptorsGirl absolutely! i just wonder how lying down in the rain could ever be outrageously fun for the dog that really dislikes water. But I'm sure there's a way I just need to brainstorm it. :)

Wondering if you had any thoughts on why my puppy barks at me when I give her a cue. She doesn't bark much at all. But she does when I ask her to sit or down. I haven't taught her 'speak' for treats or meals because I don't want her barking. She has adopted this behavior on her own. Lol

I saw that video your talking about, I thought it cant be right, my 14 week old puppy gets her down and sit mixed up all the time, i have been letting it go as that man says, but i kept thinking shes never going to get it right. so thanks, I needed to hear this. I will listen to more of your videos. I also dont agree with all the treat and toy reward stuff. When we get in from a walk i ask my puppy to sit just inside when we get in and she does, no treat, just waits (albeit sometimes in a lie down by accident ) so then i get her harness off calmly which is probably reward in itself. The only time I use a treat for anything is when she gets the zoomies and starts trying to bite, so I can get her to be still and put her in her crate to cool off.

I am taking all your classes … so what is considered a good relationship. My dog stays so close to me … she sleeps on couch, on my bed … she relates to me more than hubby … what would be your definition of a relationship.

I have a problem that I haven't seen you address in a podcast I got a 5-year-old dog from the humane society. She is a Dutch Shepherd. It seems like a previous owner has beat her or abused her. She is so skittish and nervous that it's difficult to train her. She doesn't like to play with toys she's afraid of them. Her background was living on a farm away from people. She is extremely nervous around other people and obviously has no social skills. Do you have any ideas. Thank you

How to maintain connection with dog in very difficult environment--agility ring with dog pee everywhere? My dogs find it more valuable (somehow) to go off sniffing all the stinky spots. I need to be more interesting than a dog pee spot on the mats, which shouldn't be hard, but....drives me nuts!

i used to have a dog for 15 years (white sheperd), but today? i don't think i want another one. it's too much to deal with and i'm not willing to train another dog to stop every bad behaviour they display. people, be ready and prepared when you get an animal. this is nearly as educating a little kid, with alot of similar frustrations. think before you put your dog in the pond when things aren't going easily

Look. I don't remember if it was in this podcast that you said it, but I'm sorry, I have to point this out.
When you call yourself a "kindness based" trainer, that's very offensive to anyone who isn't 'positive only'. Really, really offensive. You imply anyone who doesn't train the same as you is not a kind trainer.
I don't know who you're thinking of when you imply that, because almost every trainer I've ever seen who is a balanced trainer does everything in their power to train with kindness. In fact, the reason they use the other quadrants of operant conditioning is BECAUSE they think it's kinder to the dog.
So please don't imply that about us. It's simply wrong, and it's rude to boot.
I was in the middle of typing out a lengthy response, but realized you, like all strongly defensive balanced trainers, wouldn’t read it with an open mind. You’re easily offended by what Susan Garrett said and felt the need to vent it here because deep down you know what she said is true.
I hope that one day you will step back, assess your approach to training with an open mind and with the latest scientific research (peer-reviewed and from respectable journals), and and consider a different path. I don’t have much faith this will happen, but I hope it will.

The reason I use aversives in my training is BECAUSE I want her to have the least stress in her life, and the most happiness. THAT'S why I was so offended.
Now, as for the methods I'm using, perhaps I am wrong. Perhaps there is a better way, but I haven't seen it.
I mean, the studies I believe you're referring to are, for a start, pretty much garbage.
If those scientists were actually trying to carry out sound science, they didn't have the funds or the time to do it right.
To be honest I'm not sure training methods can be scientifically proven to be more effective than others. If you can show me something that proves me wrong, of course, please do. But it changes from dog to dog, situation to situation, so I just can't see one fix-all method working better.
