I just rescued a Malinois who spent the first 14 months of her life in a crate. Apparently when they did get her out her life wasn't very pleasant☹️ her first reaction to everything is she goes into survival mode. Poor girl. We have a long road ahead of us but I will not give up on her. Thank you for posting this. 🐾🐾

Hey Susan, ty. Confirmation bias is a horrible thing in a trainer's world. I had retired from training and recently came back. These Covid pups are in desperate need of someone to say, "yo...let's start with some bond and trust building, help elevate confidence, then we can level up and work on the fun things you dreamt about when you picked your pup out." Much love from A round of Apawz in Utah
Thank you! That is awesome insight. I do have a confident Covid pup thanks to Susan's programs but I never considered that the bond and trust building was the root of Min's confidence. I simply thought it was because I was intentional about it
My new rescue puppy has become very confident in the house. Going upstairs was a big scary thing but now it's a game. He loves the yard to play and now is getting braver on small walks on the street. But meeting new people is scary to him. He is better when there are other dogs, especially older dogs. I was so concerned and trying not to label him. Now I can move on to help him build confidence in each situation. Once again thank you so much Susan! I feel like every TH-cam video is steering us in the right direction.
Hi, sounds like your puppy is doing great, we're so happy for you! Here's a podcast with help for the challenge you're seeing: th-cam.com/video/-QDtHTbpHpY/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
I have an older dog 9 (Neptune) and his best friend (Nala-Airedale) passed away suddenly last October. Neptune (Husky border collie mix) was a rescue (parents were ferral) and was in vet quarentine for approximately 5 months. So he missed several socialization milestones. When we got him we tried to do obedience, dock dogs, and agility. In each setting he was attacked at least once by other dogs for a total of 5 times. So now when he sees another dog he reacts first aggressively. He is doing better but still is unpredictable. He was much better when Nala was around. We have gotten another puppy and they are currently separated by a large child gate or a crate. Bindi is very jumpy (Airedale) so I know that would send him over the edge. He is interested in Bindi. He has been nose to nose and was ok. He has been nose to nose and the hair stood up and teeth came out. Bindi is oblivious to everything and just wants to bounce and play. How can I handle this so it will benefit both. I acknowledge they may not be the best of friends but so Neptune will accept Bindi and Bindi won't want to jump in his face. 😢🐾❤️🐾❤️
Hi @dimples1863, so sorry to hear about Nala. It sounds like you are doing really well to help Neptune and Bindi. We have a playlist for multidog homes that includes a lot of information on integrating a puppy and what to look for in dog body language. Here's the playlist link for you - th-cam.com/play/PLphRRSxcMHy2ee0fquucowgCTcl1kCdO-.html
Ha! I'm that lady with all the journals too!! In all seriousness...this is a great video, "grow your dog's confidence" really helped me see training in a different light. Thank you!
Awesome! I always learn and re-vist Susan's training tips. Zena is now 5 and we still step back to build her confidence in certain areas! Thank you Susan!
This hit the spot. I adopted a chinese crested a couple of months ago and he is afraid of his own shadow (litterly) the sun, wind, people well about everything. The first weeks I was on the "he'll get used to it" but yeah, no he didnt. in fact it got worse. Now i take it slow as slow as he needs. He is making great progress but has a long way to go. And me as well. It is hard but it's teaching me a lot as well. Together we grow!
For context he was nearly 3 and had never walked outside, always lived with other dogs, he was the insecure one so was picked on. He than was placed back with the breeder where he was severely bullied, and after 2 months at the breeder I picked him up and now its just him and me. So his whole life was turned upside down over and over within months. He isnt the most secure to begin with so its hard on him!
I can't think of anywhere that my English bulldog isn't confidant in. he always has his chest out head up. he's been helping my rescued doberman come out of her shell.
After this episode I have been trying to put my dogs’ barking out the balcony window on cue with “who’s a brave dog.” Yesterday, while I was in a different area of the house I heard my mom complaining about one dog barking so I instinctively said “whoooooooo’s a brave dog” and the dog decided that was a recall 😂 Not complaining, since the barking ceased because she was so excited to run to me while I was out of sight. The accidental recall was feedback and I think she needs a new cue for barking 😅
Oh man, i wish I'd had this video with some of my past dogs, Preparing for new puppy, and going in well-armed this time to get things right for her, no matter who she turns out to be!
Super awesome podcast. One to keep on repeat ❤️ feels nice to know it’s normal when still building confidence. It also helps me to remain positive and create a plan when I take my dog to new environments
Thank you Susan. I have this problem with my 2 yr old malinois girl . She jumps with open mouth again and again, really scary , when there's s fireworks or shooting noise. A few times I fell over and then where in a struggle fight, very dangerous even though she won't bite me intensionally it still hurts. I get all brushed and scratched.
Wonderful information! This really helps me think of different locations and situations to grow my dog's confidence. Thank you again for a wonderful podcast.
My Dalmatian shows fear and lack of confidence very differently than my Australian Shepard. I wish I had recognized her fear and confidence issues as that, but it looked like confidence to my unknowing eyes.
Love this. My dog is confident with kids, people, water, anywhere at home, inside and out but not so much in a different or more urban environment. I will take your advice and try to build her confidence in new environments.
Thank you for another very helpful clear podcast. Its made me think as my dog is often not confident in the evenings when all 4 of us are watching TV and also if there are noises outside of the lounge. I need to observe and write down all the situations in this room that cause her to bark and look stressed. Then I can work through them with a plan.
Thank you for this podcast! This is so helpful! My 18 month old puppy is very confidant in most environment and he loves to play with most dogs. However, if food becomes involved he can get very possessive and guard it from other dogs. My question is weather letting him play with a dog he knows well, and just managing the resource guarding (until I work up the confidence to work on it) will help grow his confidence around dogs or grow his fear of his resources getting stolen. He's only resource guarded towards one dog (that I know of) and it's also the dog he loves to play with and plays intensely with the most. What do you think?
I have a question you said when you were talking about getting your dog used too water you wouldn't use the same method for getting her used to dogs I'm just curious why and I love most of your videos keep it up
Decaf is beautiful! Interesting that she is white. I've read that white dogs (animals) are genetically more prone to anxiety. And I have an anxious white terrier mix and you have been been a blessing to both of us!
Wow super educational I really appreciate it I just got a 8 week old chow puppy and he’s 4months old now. He lacks confidence when I take him to work with me, but has confidence everywhere else. I work with a girl with severe autism and he barks and growls at her parents. I was shocked and sad because I thought maybe it’s just his breed. I need to try your tips otherwise I won’t be able to have him with me everyday and he’ll have to be alone while I work. I do socialize him a lot and he goes to dog parks. Also I noticed him resource guarding with treats with my other dog at home. So I need to figure out what to do about that too because I don’t want a dog fight. Do you recommend I bring my chow to hang out in the parents room with me. I feel that they might need to spend more time with him. They are very private people. Let me know what you think thank you. ❤
Hi! Thank you, please let us know how you and your dog do with Susan's tips! Here's a playlist with help for Living with Multiple Dogs , including resource guarding: th-cam.com/video/XO41pfU_Us8/w-d-xo.html&pp=gAQBiAQB
Thank you Susan. This really gives me a great deal of insight into some of my dog's outside behavior. It gives me a starting point to work on what appears to be some lack of confidence.
We went to take our service test and did not do well at all , but we had not been out in the stores with other dogs during the last 2 years BUT on our own we done quite well Sharon
Susan - I'm asking this because you have built trust with me and I don't trust any other trainers right now. I have a boxer/hound mix rescue that I adopted (after finding him on the street in 2018). We took him to a trainer recently and worked on reactivity around other dogs. We went to his farm and used another one of his dogs far off in the distance for practice. By the end of that training session, the trainer told us that our dog was the most EXCITED reactive dog he'd ever worked with. Our dog (Marty) screams and turns in circles when he sees anything in the distance while he's on a leash (dog, human, moving objects). All the other videos on TH-cam around reactive dogs seem to focus on harsher punishments, which I feel only make the situation worse. We are working on your basic games for reinforcement zones, etc. Should we remove him from any stressful situation until we get the basics under control, or are there any dog/dog interactions we could work on in the meantime? Like bringing a new dog over to our house to practice? Or going to someone else's house to practice with another dog greeting? My goal (which is far, far off is to be able to walk him at a dense public park or a dog park in future), but I'm worried to push Marty too far too soon. He's such a good boy at home, and I want him to be able to walk off leash and not react to other stressors, but I'm worried his time as a street dog and in a bad home prior will be too much to work through.
Not sure if this is fear or lack of confidence 18 week puppy (Kangal/Kuvasz) who is afraid of getting into the back of my SUV. I don’t want him to be afraid of the vehicle. He is fine once he gets in but he was 60 lbs at 16 weeks and eventually I’d like him to jump in the back of my car. Any tips would be very much appreciated! Thank you!
Hi Suzanne, thank you for wanting to help your puppy! We have a video for you that breaks down what to do so that he will come to love the car - th-cam.com/video/XXkPmR5am5U/w-d-xo.html
Sorry... You hammered the point that dogs (and people) are not equally confident in all situations. Got it. Now we want to encourage our dogs (and people) to be more confident in new situations. Got it. What I missed was the "how" to do that. You spent so much time talking about how things can go wrong, that I don't think I caught how to get things to go right. I'm less confident now than I was before I watched the video.
Hi I have a 18 months Ridgeback X German Shepherd and he was bred for fighting but he has not a hair of fight or violence in his body. he is afraid of everything that makes noise, or moves suddenly, he is not food driven, gets scared of toys and he tends to run away if something scares him. So I need help I've tried the John Wayne method, noise training, change leash, rewards, treats, toys but he still tries to run away by pulling on the leash and sometimes he had broken the leash and run into traffic

I've been teaching my 6 year old Swiss / white shepherd to bark on command and her bark in house realy is much stronger then during walks. Since she is scared of dogs (and reactive) i suspect her confidence is lower during walks. During walks there might only be a puff of air or a small whine /bark when i tell her to "speak". I wonder if this is a good gauge of her confidence as well?
Hi Guys I’ve got a red 5 month old bc and she is a bit loud and not confident around other dogs when at our dog club. She has only been there two times haha. My 16 week old German Shepherd puppy is nervous of new people or people he doesn’t see very often. He runs and hides. When I take him to the pet store, he’s fine, except for if a person wants to say hi to him, then he hides behind me. Do you have any tips to help build his confidence around new people?
Hi Victoria, its wonderful you notice and want to help him. Our video about the bubble of pressure is a really helpful: th-cam.com/video/E8nSFiqTalM/w-d-xo.html We have a playlist all about the emotions of dogs with many tips and strategies: th-cam.com/play/PLphRRSxcMHy29pv3_9b7DZdMFJL9ZJPMy.html
I just want to know how to minimise my pup’s anxiety without listening to other peoples stories. It is frustrating to not get straight into the “how to”.
Once again ring wise or ring shut down happeneing with my BC that is a 200 dog at home in CDX..failed BJ and Ret over HJ that never happens in training..as you suggested need more "other areas to train i "..hard to do when you live in the country...grrrrrr..think i will give up on Dog Obedience and feed goldfish!
Why DO dogs run around pools and bark when kids are playing in them? I've never known whether it was just out of excitement or are they terrified everyone's drowning?? 🤔
Hi @CamilleGG451, thanks for the question. Most likely the dogs are very excited to see all the kids splashing around and "amping them up". Of course, this can vary depending on the situation and the dog. Here is a great podcast Susan did about decoding Dog Body Language th-cam.com/video/t1Zcqp8IwnI/w-d-xo.html which can help further identify why your dog may be acting the way they are. 💛 (Sarah - DogsThat Team)
@@DogsThat Thanks Sara! I'm ALL into dog body language right now and reading through the Turid Rugas book and to the others that Susan recommended. Definitely watching all of Susan's vids on this aa well so thanks! (Becoming a dog trainer here so lots of studying! :) It's been a long time since I witness the dog and pool behavior but remember always wondering! Thank you again 😊
@CamilleGG451, that's fantastic! Have you seen our podcast episode where Susan speaks with Laurie C. Williams about becoming a dog trainer? th-cam.com/video/-kQZPUP1KFw/w-d-xo.html. Susan did another podcast all about becoming a dog trainer here: th-cam.com/video/2h7DqVILt00/w-d-xo.html. With your interest in positive reinforcement training, we have no doubt you will be an awesome dog trainer! 💜(Sarah - DogsThat Team)
I don't want to bring a sad note to this video, but you just mention one of the most costly situation for a dog in a shelter , confirmation bias, I spent a few year working in shelters in the US and in the UK and I can tell you that most of the dogs put down were never bad when they came in the center, they were turned and shaped by the very employees that work as care givers or trainers , I spoke to several shelter managers at the time trying to explain the situation but the cop out is always safety, but I can confirm that it happens inside your local shelter anywhere, they should listen and watch videos like this one before they do the intake assessments , great video thanks.

When I take him to the pet store, he’s fine, except for if a person wants to say hi to him, then he hides behind me. Do you have any tips to help build his confidence around new people?
Hi Victoria, its wonderful you notice and want to help him. Our video about the bubble of pressure is a really helpful: th-cam.com/video/E8nSFiqTalM/w-d-xo.html
We have a playlist all about the emotions of dogs with many tips and strategies:

@@DogsThat thank you!

My border is reactive. Definitely the opposite of submissive 😢
Many dogs are reactive and very submissive. Reactive often = lack of confidence.
How do I stop feeling sorry for my rescue pit
