  • Most puppies go through a ‘Fear Period’ stage, which can include fear of objects, adults, children, and other dogs. Unfortunately, many popular strategies taught to counter puppy fear are the absolute worst things possible. I’m covering three things you should never do when your puppy or rescue dog displays fear of people and what to do instead to create confident and empowered dogs.
00:00 When puppies are scared of children and adults.
01:10 3 things to never do with fearful puppies and dogs.
02:02 Definition and dangers of “flooding” frightened dogs.
03:33 The 3E’s of puppy socializing and overcoming fears.
04:27 Give the dog control vs controlling the dog.
05:28 Cues and games to grow puppy and dog confidence.
06:48 Refocus dog’s attention with a unique noise.
10:00 Change the environment by changing your appearance.
12:54 Create “training dens” at home to begin confidence building.
14:37 Signs your puppy is confident and joyful.
17:50 Testing your dog’s confidence in new environments.
19:38 3E’s Venn - Environment, Education and Empowerment
20:27 Training positive emotional responses near fear trigger environments.
20:47 How to handle houseguests when your puppy might fear them.
    In the episode you'll hear:
    * The bad advice given when puppies show fear of people.
    * What 'flooding' is and why it intensifies fears.
    * The 3E's of Environment, Education and Empowerment for puppy and rescue dog socializing.
    * About empowering your dog with choice vs. controlling them.
    * Cues and games that grow confidence for puppies and dogs.
    * How to use a distinct noise to refocus a puppy's attention when they're worried.
    * Ways to change the environment easily by changing your appearance.
    * How to set up "training dens" in your home and increase confidence for puppies or rescue dogs.
    * What body language looks like for confident and joyful dogs.
    * How to manage and train in environments with potential fear triggers for your dog.
    * What to do when you have houseguests that your dog or puppy fears.

Absolutely BRILLIANT!🎉 40+ years ago, while working on a remote lightstation, I used several of these tactics to help my new Sheltie puppy. I had noticed a change in her behavior and found out that the other lighthouse keeper had been hitting her for playing and taking his work tools! The idiot also said he was teaching her to shake a paw: when she didn't he'd hit her on the side of the head! 🤯🤬 That's when I built a kennel as a safe zone and forbade him to ever touch my dog again. It took work and time but she became an extremely confident dog, despite never leaving the lightstation and when we moved to the city she didn't need many experiences to become confident anywhere. Always believe the dog!🙂

Thank you so much Susan. I reached out to your team and they were so helpful in the replies.
We got a 12mth old from a show breeder, and have had such a lot of fear issues.
2 of the 3 things you said not to do is what our local trainer suggested, it didn't feel right though.

So much sense......I wonder whether we should encourage the word 'socialisation' to be scrapped in the dog training world 🤔 I think it has a different meaning to us humans, than what we actually want our dogs to experience....? We could call it something like 'environment adventures' with mum or dad or 'playing games in different places'....? I made my dog more fearful by following the wrong advice and 'socialising' in dog areas, when my puppy instructor noticed, my boy was anxious around other dogs....🤦‍♀️just one of the reasons I looked for help else where and found my people here!

I was going to take my fearful younger dog to a friend’s house for a very short (2 minute) visit to have the friend just throw some treats in pupper’s direction but I’ll save anything like that for much further down the road and stick to Recallers for now.

My puppy Zeke is almost 5 months. This podcast is so timely and valuable. We have begun Recallers and this explanation is a super visual aid for me to remember how to incorporate what we’ve learned into a healthy introduction to the world! Thank You! ❤We’ve had so many people who want to run up and love on him without asking and assuming it’s okay to get him excited and keep him at that state. He loves all people and dogs but we are teaching him not to go bonkers! We have had to politely ask people not to do that. Listening to your podcast actually reminded me that it is my responsibility to safe guard these interactions MORE and to teach Zeke the cues of what he can do or what I can do when things seem overwhelming (which has happened on a walk with too much stimuli - scents and sounds) or if either of us is feeling unsure.
    Looking forward to episode 200! 🎉 😊🎉😊🎉😊🎉

I'm in HSTD and recallers, and most recently, H360 and it is magic! :). I adopted my four year old when she was 2, who is super confident. When I looked at taking my puppy (now 6months old), I thought to myself that I will really have to protect his confidence as he tended to 'sit back and watch'. It has all been going really well. but tonight, just out training and playing in the field (I live in a field in a tiny house), I was playing tug with him and I made that 'schwwwoooosh' noise (like Susan does lol), and he freaked out - turned and ran all the way back to the house. He ran into his bed and doesn't want to come out. I am gobsmacked! So this video is timely and after scratching my head, I will observe and see how to get his confidence back. I won't make that noise in a hurry again for sure! He seems to be extra sensitive to a few things lately. So I will have to put my investigator hat on!

    Dear Susan Garrett
I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart, because finding your TH-cam canel meant that I am going to try to keep my 1 1/2 years old german shepherd with anxiety and reactive. We have 3 dogs which are 2 mixed races aged 14 and 4 years, and the GS. My ability as a trainer had been enough with the first 2. I had actually given up, but all your advice in every single video and not least your philosophy of being kind and that the dog deserves the best has given me new courage. So thank you, thank you thank you 🙏🏻❤️

This was so timely for me! I just had a bad experience with my chihuahua and was feeling quite discouraged again 😢. He nipped a friend as she was turning around to leave. He was barking and growling furiously when she came in the house. She bent down and offered her hand. He approached her cautiously and even licked her hand at one point, but kept guard barking at her. I gave her some treats to give him ( which I now know not to do). He took them, but kept barking. I crouched down beside my dog to try to reassure him, but he only backed up. When I stood up, he quickly lunged at my friend a grazed her hand with his teeth (she was still crouched down). I was so embarrassed.😢 I need to review this podcast a few times and put the advice to work! Thank you Susan and team 🙏🏻

My 4.5 month old rescue pup, Maremma, is terrified of everything. I walk her between 8pm and 9pm to avoid as many dogs, cats, people, cars, overhead planes, or helicopters, bicycles, etc, as possible. She is terrified of me leaving the house, her getting in the car, her being near a car, the vet, many types of music, TV, and movies. Almost everything I can think of scares her, even some of her dog toys scare her. She is fully vaxxed, so ready to socialise, but again, terrified of dog parks and other dogs. She's even scared of people she has met on multiple occasions. The 3rd time a neighbour met her, she still barked and tried to run and took a couple minutes to allow him to touch her. She's smart, though, and has learned to sit, down, pee, and touch commands easily. I've never had such a fearful dog. My last Maremma was a boy, and he was fine. I'm currently going through all your podcasts now in hopes that I can find something to help her.

Follow this protocol is the first step. Don’t allow someone to approach her until she is more confident. Get her confident in all the rooms of your home with all of them behaviours I’m suggesting in this video.

my dad was a police k9 trainer he used to say, use the first 6 months of a dogs life getting them learning and building a strong foundation an working on a relationship build on trust get the puppy walking in different places get them to follow you and eventually their confidence will increase in slices then just gradually start walking them closer to people make it fun like jogging dont force it then as the puppy grows it will just be conditioned an desensitize so various environments. now he manly worked with German shepherds. he didn't believe dogs accepting food from other people

    • @DogsThat
      @DogsThat  ปีที่แล้ว

Connie follow the exact protocal exactly as I've described it here. Allowing a puppy to hide between your legs is not at all the same thing as cueing a fun behaviour of driving in between your legs. it sounds like your puppy is going over threshold around men so I would take a giant step backwards and start growing confidence.
