I know it will cost more, but when you redo the roof, if they use more substantial rafters and purlins and heavier grade roof panels, they will be far better suited against storm damage. Also, using screws to attach the roof panels instead of nails will hold much better. It also didn't appear there was any storm straps to secure the rafters to the top of the wall, which allowed the wind to lift the roof off the wall.

Yes you need to use also the thick flywood for the ceiling, it can never easily breaks, your place always have a big typhoon....use the stainless steel for the roof....hopefully you can build your house slowly make it more stronger materials.....your safety is more important...we will pray for Cebu, Bohol and Siargao...and all the places in Visayan region to be strong...

In Australia there are Cyclone (Typhoon) rated roof screws and importantly tying the roof battens to the rafters, tying the rafters to the beams, tying the beams to the top plate and tying the top plates to all the posts.

When building a house you must anchor the foundation to the ground putting deep Piers if there is concern for sinking. The walls must be anchored to the foundation and the roof must be anchored to the walls. Nails do little more than hold a piece of wood in place long enough to put bolts with brackets through major support structures. They must be used to hold wood in place against typhoon force winds. I imagine that the brackets are quite expensive when building the house but they are most certainly required. Alternative brackets may be made from bamboo or construction grade plastic.

I have been to Cebu and other places (Negros Occ/Oriental, Manila, Mindanao), and experienced the recent earthquake in Manila, and you suffer so much sometimes. But you are amazing people, and I have so much admiration and love for you. Do you still need support? I am no great at using PP (or IG & I am a bit old for TT), but will try if needed. Hi Meljean, it is heartwrenching to see the aftermath that typhoon Odette brought to our country. I suggest trying the RAMMED EARTH system in building a house. If in case your sister is planning to build a new one. This technique uses dirt that can be excavated on site. The whole idea of the building is that, it is like you are making a hollow block, but instead of ramming it in a hollow block form, you will be ramming the dirt inside the formwork. You need to test your site soil how much percentage is the gravel, sand, silt, and clay so that you can determine how much portland cement you can add. You can start 5% of portland cement as a binder to your soil. You can make a trial wall or bench or firepit to determine the toughness of the mixtures. For the roof use a little thick steel C purlins and 18mm thick hardeflex then have it waterproof then put organic soil (is a little bit lighter than clay soil) and plant some veggies on the roof. This is called the green roof. The roof helps regulate temperature as well as the rammed earth walls and also protects against strong wind. A good example of the rammed Earth construction is the Great Wall of China.

Maybe you don't welcome this kind of comment, and I am certainly no construction expert, but is it possible to 'build back better' by not having any overhang of the roof. Maybe an alternative separate type of overhang that if it is destroyed the roof remains, I read somewhere that the winds hit the walls then shoot up and outwards from there. In my country we don't have overhang but have gutters that can be used for water collection. Anyway, I am no expert and possibly don't know what I am talking about, but it's an idea.
I noticed your video got many comments. You have many friends. You are not alone. And you are a lot stronger than maybe you feel at the moment. I'm looking forward to your great journey, your great triumph and your immense happiness. Life WILL improve.

So sorry for all the death and destruction in your beautiful country. I am happy to see you and your loved ones made it through. I can see you are traumatized and perplexed. Climate change means that this is the new normal. Huge storms that will be far bigger than this one will be happening in the future. Everyone needs to plan for the hurricanes so they can survive the tragedy of our climate changing world. All my prayers and best wishes for you!
Here are some ideas on how to move forward to keep safe.
    1. Check out how to build geodesic dome houses. The wind blows around them.
    2. Think about trading your car for a small Toyota truck to help the family earn money. It is much more practical for a business and recovering from storms.
    3. Use composting toilets to use human waste to fertilize fruit trees.
    4. Use the storm destruction to collect wood to repair your homes.
    5. Water tanks need to be concrete and in the ground with solar pumps, collect rain of the roof. The roofs need hurricane clips with 2x6 rafters 2 ft on center,
I wish I was there to help you!

@@La-vc6nt thank you, today also here in Israel we’re expecting typhoon but thanks god it’s not the same the typhoon that I experienced in the Philippines. But those struggles that we experienced during this hard time made us more stronger to survive. We may not be Rich in material things but having our families alive with us, that’s more than enough to be thankful for. Lives is
More important than anything else and for that we need to be grateful🙏

@@Traveller0518 Mira, I hope everything works out for you there in Israel. You are rich in love & spirit & that what matters most. I guess you have family & loved ones in the PI, no doubt, so hope they are physically ok & hopefully didn't suffer too much damage. Take care to You & all the Filipino people 🙏💯❤️

Often the biggest trees dont stand up too well as they are like a larger sail and catch more wind. Stay safe.

House needs 8 inch wood roof joist planks and use anchor bolts to hold it from flying off. a double thick or even triple thick block retaining wall cement with reinforced steel would protect the back wall and over all structure facing the ocean where Typhoons winds come from. It's a matter of money i know as many people have very low income. Thanks for the video this was a very bad but lives were saved by 300,000 evacuated
Best to you and all as you rebuild.

Use concrete blocks and steel to build plus a slab roof. When hurricaanes an typhoon comes you stay inside and drink beers.
