How to build a Cheap DIY Vacuum Chamber

  • In this video I show how to build your own super cheap DIY vacuum chamber. You need just a glass jar for food canning, a lid, a piece of plastic tube, hot melt glue and some hose. Combined with a vacuum pump, this homemade vacuum chamber allows for a lot of interesting experiments. You can also add a vacuum gauge to indicate the level of vacuum. I connected the vacuum gauge using a "T" splitter from a broken blood pressure meter.

    Hmm, this might be useful for degassing of silicone. It's important to get the bubbles out before casting.

    • @antibrevity
      @antibrevity 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It can also be used to degas epoxy for composite construction. Mixing the epoxy invariably adds a tons of bubbles, which then become trapped between layers of fiber when used, weakening the build.

    You baloon torturer :D
    That is such a pleasing effect, i really like your use of ordinary items in your experements, the old compressor is the only special item, but not hard to find one.
    The tubing and connectors could also be found at a tropical fish shop.
    Expansion and compression of gasses, i imagine the density of the gas would also make a difference.

    Nice. I use car tire valve which has nut tightening. I have an old compressor from vintage 2” video tape recorder where you had to make vacuum which sucked the tape against the head drum guide.

    Most commercial containers are built to resist internal pressures pressing outward not opposing forces. They are excellent at designed function ie can bottle soda champagne outward inward pull. Please use a shield or plastic coated glassware steel vacuum pressure designed or pipes. Good on you to be curious, same and been injured not from this. 👍🏻

    If you wrap the jar with clear tape like cellotape or any clear packing type tape it would be much safer in the event of an implosion. I have seen it doneand there was very little if any escaped glass. :) Al

    Maybe wrap clear vinyl tape around the jar, to stop shrapnel, should it implode? I've seen bell jars a bit thinner, so I know you were adding to the excitement.. OK, back to electronics!

    It's probably as good a vacuum as needed to degas resins and silicone when casting, so they don't form bubbles and make a good surface.
    What other uses for it are there? How about upgrading the ZD-211 desoldering iron into an automatic one?
    Could the same compressor be used for airbrushing? Not sure how much airflow it needs, probably not all that much. Or does it not have that much of an intended duty cycle? Would be nice to have one compact silent compressor that you can use for all kinds of light workshop tasks, electronics projects related, cosplay and decoration, arts and crafts related etc, not one of these bulky loud units from home improvement store.
    These days i no longer collect useful little plastic bits, i 3D print them, and since it only costs less than 20€/kg, i can just throw them away when not needed, keeps my home so much neater. But that's an aside.

    • @any1alive
      @any1alive 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes, you only needs 15 bar i think it was to degas silicone but lower helps heaps
      also for spraypaintign it might not be good, as it also outputs oil , and you dont want the oil mixed into paint XD

      I put 3 in tandem all pressurizing an 11 gallon tank with pneumatic electric cut off solenoids, an over pressure pop off valve, in tank check valve with a release to relieve head pressure in the lines when the solenoid reaches set pressure of 130psi and the 3 pumps takes about 3 mins to reach that.. super quiet and good for small shop use.. airbrushing or painting with em you need a desiccant filter and oil/water separator before the gun and need to change out the pag oil in the compressor cuz it contains freon and other junk that can react and form some very powerful acids ad pag oil is hygrophobic so change to hydraulic or compressor oil and keep eye on the oil separator to see how much it will spit out so can refill with same as they’re built to push a little oil through the closed refrigerator system to lube stuff.. but that said theyve been working great for years.. recently got an a/c unit 240v hermetic and that booger is faster than the 3 combined so would like to try a vac test with it... be interesting..

      There are vacuum devices for men with erectile dysfunction. I believe that one uses a not-too-tight elastic band to maintain the erection.
      Probably less popular now what with Viagra and so on.

    We know that outside air is pushing on our bodies and objects. But where is that extra air inside baloon coming from ?

    • @CurmudgeonExtraordinaire
      @CurmudgeonExtraordinaire 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There is no extra air. It's the same amount. The apparent size of the balloon is a balance between the exterior air pressure and the interior air pressure.

    • @DerekHundik
      @DerekHundik 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great experiment!
    I have friends that claims rockets won't work in space/vacuum since there is nothing to push against.
    So I did a test:
    th-cam.com/video/BZGluOB-TJw/w-d-xo.html
    Would be fun to see if you can ignite a tiny rocket in your chamber to see if the pressure changes and goes back to the same vacuum after the burn.
    Thanks for great videos!

      Vacuum has nothing to do with rockets working, Newton's 3rd law always works, rockets don't need anything to push against, your friends are idiots.

      @CringeOfCzech 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      in a vacuum it is impossible to light fire but nasa uses a special trick that makes the fire ignite with a little bit of pressure

    • @AverageJoe2020
      @AverageJoe2020 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope, if the chemicals in the 'rocket' have enough oxygen present there will be a reaction-an expansion of gasses, so that reaction converts into physical motion.
