    Today I was trying to build a DIY vacuum pump from a fridge compressor. I tried to measure the vacuum it can pull. I also tried to chain two fridge compressors (put them in series) to see if this can create a better vacuum. I reached about 80 mbar (8 kPa) vacuum with one compressor and 40 mbar (4 kPa) with 2 compressors (the discharge of one goes into the suction of the other).

    Let me explain how we remove the coolant from these in Slovakia: 1. You leave the whole fridge near trash cans. 2. You wait until a homeless guy comes and cuts out the heatsink of the fridge, making the coolant seep out 3. If you are lucky, the homeless guy leaves without stealing the compressor. You can take it and not worry about the planet by yourself:)

      Same in Poland, only they almost always grab the compressor first (an obvius big hunk of metal), so that won't work. Luckily refrigerants like R290 and R600 that are used in most of the new-ish refrigerators that I've seen in person are almost not harmful to the environment compared to all the fluorine-containing compunds. It's literally propane and butane.

    Very useful experiment for me. As I mentioned last video I stripped a compressor and was looking to make a vacuum pump out of it but I never tested it. In fact I don't have a vacuum gauge yet. This benchmarks it for me. Now I know what to expect.
    Some current measurements throughout the experiment would have been nice too. It would be interesting to see how the motor reacts in a vacuum. Some guestimates on the heat generated too. I will see if i can do that whenever i get my system completed. Add to the knowledge useful to a hobbyist.

    Nice video, learn so much from them , once i tried running vacuum pumps in series and parallel, but no luck only get to 15 millitorr ,found its to do with the number of molecules in the chamber evacuated, need molecular pump or diffusion pump

    Are run capacitors needed if using for vacuum chamber? What effect if use without run cap and bare wires and rocker switch to start run.

      The type of usage doesn't matter, start capacitors start it turning, without a start capacitors it will just buzz until it overheats and burns, the motor worn actually turn and nothing will happen.

      Asi mu to nevadí, když to není moc dlouho. Ten motor se chladí nejen chladivem, ale i rozstřikováním oleje. I při vakuu se to pořád nějak chladí tím olejem a když to dosáhne maximálního podtlaku, tak to vypnu.

    Does these pumps contain oil to lubricate the moving parts or by removing the refrigeration you also remove the lubrication?

      Oil typically fills the bottom part of the compressor. You can check with a dip stick or periodically tilt the compressor to empty it and refill with fresh oil.

    Iodine has a triple point pressure of 119milibar, at 113.5C.
    You can put solid iodine in a jar, pump it to around 120milibar, and watch it turn from solid to liquid to gas from just heating it
    Nice project with your pump that can do 80milibar?

    Abt 300 mbar I think was the pressure at the top of Mt Everest and 3 mbar at the Mars Atmosphere . The 2 Compressors in line you may simulate Mars conditions 👀

      @@DiodeGoneWild did you ever do this experiment? It's obvious what the outcome will be. If you're still considering going to the trouble of doing it, maybe get some bottles/balloons of helium and zenon or argon or all three. Show the differing speeds of sound in different atmospheres?

    Be careful about releasing pressure to that vacuum gauge suddenly - it can bend the internal components and cause it to be severely inaccurate.

      Many vacuum systems have quick venting procedures, a gauge that can't handle that type of "surge" wouldn't be built well enough to worry about accuracy anyways.

    Nice demonstration. How much positive pressure can you get out of the other side. You might be able to connect one to a tank to make a small quiet bench air pressure source. It could be handy for cleaning with a blast of air. I've been tempted to break out an old airbrush compressor for something about like that for blowing alcohol out from around components. I'd rather pour a bit of isopropyl on larger PCBs, clean up what I can with a brush and paper towel, and then blow out the rest with air.
    Also you can usually find cheap vacuum gauges in auto parts stores. I have several I've collected over the years for tuning carburetors. Places like eBay probably have many more options isolated to the eBay automotive site. eBay usually keeps items from the automotive side partitioned off due to search terminology filtering.

      I noticed you have a transistor tester on your channel, i have a T4 clone, i had to remove the test socket because of changing capacitor esr readings.

      I have an old 1/2 HP compressor out of an industrial freezer (I think) that puts out 60 PSI or so. I've been using it for 30 years to pump tires, spray paint, and sandblast.

      I haven't tried comparing different units or testing ESR accuracy. I plan to eventually but I got one of the worst case of the flu that put me in the ER back in December and had to put stuff on hold for a bit.
      Out of 3 clones the T3/T4 I have is the farthest from the OSHW project design. It uses 5% sense resistors instead of 0.1% and the typical TL431A +/- 1% voltage reference in SMD form instead of the LM4040 at 0.1%. It appears the voltage reference in SMD form is more influenced by temperature as well. If you log the results of testing one device several times over, you will probably notice more erratic test results for the first 3-6 tests in a row out of around 50. At least that is what I noticed.
      Just before getting sick I tried using a mains adaptor to power the T3/T4 unit and tracked the results with a battery versus mains. That is a bad idea. It is very difficult to get consistent results with mains power. I still want to try tuning a passive filter with a scope, or a capacitor multiplier/active ripple filter to see if that helps. If I can get my filming setup done I'll try to build the other 2 clones (AY-AT/GM328) and compare them and their readings with some precision components. I'm also trying to create and etch my own ATmega644/Version 2 design, and doing a how to program on Linux and a separate how to program for Windows....So basically I'm doing way to much for a slow partially disabled gimp, but I'll get there eventually.
      I'm still only a couple of years into hobby electronics and don't have a nice LCR meter though, so it is difficult for me to speak to the overall accuracy of the capacitor ESR reading. All I can share are the details I've noticed while goofing around. Hopefully I'll be able to get an LCR or build one soon. I think I have everything to build a couple of different designs, but I don't really trust a homemade analog ESR meter or an L/C meter, like Mr Jonnny posted last week, any more than I trust Karl-Heinz and Marcus R.'s programming skills with the AVR TT project.

      lol i also checked the 470k and 680R sense resistors too, they were not even 1% tolerance, but they can be swapped for the 0.1% ones later.
      Ive been into electronic repair for most of my life, but i found learning a up hill struggle, so i never really went deep into the jibberish in text books.
      I came to the conclusion i was "Thick" / low iQ, but i have repaired so many things over the years and i was the electronics section of a factory, so perhaps not "Thick" ha ha :-D.
      I bought the T4 because i had no way to test esr in capacitors removed from evil switchmode psu's lol, and this T4 is run from a 9v battery.
      Im still thinking the crap green i.c socket is causing some trouble.
      Ive looked at the original german design, and the ref voltage of 2.5v is only used for the battery voltage check, i may short it out later to see if it changes the measurements.
      You sound like you need clones of yourself to do all the things you want to do :-D, just get better soon, you will cope ok then.

    Would be interesting to see the results of a bottle type rotary AC compressor since those are designed in a way that actually pumps more vacuum. Piston compressors like those require check valves on the inlet and the vacuum will never be lower than how much pressure is required to push past those check valves. Since rotary compressors don't have inlet check valves they are capable of pumping a much stronger vacuum.

      There is a fluid/oil/coolant in the compressor witch runs trough the radiator on the back of the fridge to cool the pump, but i guess its not dangerous to do it without the radiator..

    I'd hope they didn't leak, since they were originally full of some nasty CFC refrigerant. Good to see the seals still work, though!

      this is a different situation! it's not important if the compressor has not a non return valve or similar because the circuit is closed and it won't leak off the circuit, so the refrigerant remain here! the only problem in this case is less efficiency of the compressor!
      the problem of refrigerant leaking happen when the refrigerant circuit is broken (a crack in a pipe for example, or a bad joint between two pipe) or when someone "recycle" the refrigerator gas improperly (like disperde to the air )

      It starts getting exponential as you approach zero air. This would make a "roughing pump:" which makes a rough vacuum. It gets expensive as you need more vacuum - turbomolecular multistage, getters, .... ugh.

    Well that gauge does not have to be perfect, its a comparison of relative vacume.

      At these levels of vacuum those homemade fittings work just fine. Outgassing and near molecular leakage don't have any significant effect until much stronger vacuum levels.

      That's not how it works, parallel simply increases speed, not total pressure. The maximum vacuum is however much is required to overcome the check valves. With putting them in series it reduces the backpressure keeping the valve closed which increases your total vacuum slightly, but your still limited by the mechanical force of the check valve. Putting in parallel would have a worse vacuum as there is nothing to help reduce the backpressure against the back of the check valve.

      Yeah, thats annoying a little bit, but after watching some of his videos u'll get used to it.
