    I was given a blue Royal Safari in 1966 for my bar mitzvah. Over the years, it went the way of all cherished things, sigh. I bought a similar one on Ebay in a fit of inebriated nostalgia eight or nine years ago, haven’t used it much but got it got out few days ago. Decades of using electronic keyboards has pretty much demolished my typing technique, but it’s fun to revisit the past 😊.

    I just got a gray 1963 Safari missing the ribbon cover for $15. Cleaned the margin rack to fix the magic margins, now it works perfectly. It’s a happy machine. To me it feels more like a Smith Corona than a Royal.

    I can see your point on the Safari I keyboard, but it's so awesome in it's design, an example of form over function and it just works for the eye. IMHO. :)

    I have the Sears branded version of that yellow one. As far as I can tell it’s exactly the same unit, though mine doesn’t work quite well.
    It’s gummed up, the backspace goes back but doesn’t stay and while typing it often skips several spaces. Didn’t pay much, so I suppose I can’t be too unhappy.
    My Royal Signet from the 70’s on the other hand works exactly as it should and is quite enjoyable for how simple it is. Both machines have cases I love.

    How about testing the oldest portable in your collection against the newest regardless of brand? Maybe not a fair comparison but it definitely would be interesting to see the overall changes in quality and styling.

    Another great video Sara! We had a Royal Safari with the script font, but like you I wasn't a fan of the typing experience so we sold it. Not to worry because we have a Torpedo 18 with an artistic script and the Olympia SF typewriter with Olympia's small script that we took to the Chicago Type in so we still have a script typewriters. :) I'm glad that you still like the typewriter you traded for in Chicago, I was wondering what your long term experience would be. I'm glad that on balance you like the typeface enough to overcome the typing experience (it is one of the best looking script typeface in my opinion).

    Sara: Love your videos. I have the early US made Safari from 1963 and sitting beside a Smith Corona 5 series there is a significant difference in the height of the key board. The Safari is 1 5/8 in LOWER than the SCM. The slope is even GREATER on the SCM than the Safari. I am a two fingered typist, sort of like you. I prefer the SCM's overall. I am just guessing that your uncomfortableness may be due to the height difference of the keys and that your hands just adapt better to the greater height and maybe the greater slope too..

    • @JustMyTypewriter
      @JustMyTypewriter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's an excellent point! Slope definitely has impacted my typing experience on other machines (my Sm7 for sure!)

    I’m always fascinated by the amount of research you do. 😊. I just bought a Montana which so far seems to be an Hermes Baby Clone made in Italy. Still researching. Aldo is your mug from Red Bubble?

    For stubborn screws I use a impact screwdriver. Your supposed to use it with a hammer but I can remove most machine screws just by using it as a screwdriver since it weighs about 2 lbs. You can find them cheap at harbor freight. Great video I just got a safari but the type is very faint I’m thinking cotton ribbon would be the way to go.

    The Royal Safari is a dreadful machine to type on. The ‘wash bowl’ design is almost designed to be awkward, especially when reaching for the top key row. No thanks. 👎

    Why have a showdown? This is so much of your tender generation, mostly spurred on by silly phones and social media. I'm a typewriter guy for several decades and BOTH of these machines are fine for the average typist. Don't we already have enough conflict in our lives without you creating more, whether for 'fun' or not? Disappointed...
