I have a '68 Aristocrat and the carriage on mine is different from that one, doesn't look like that one. The rest does, and everyone knocks this typewriter but I humbly disagree.
I've written on mine easily over 800 pages since I bought it in Dec 2023, it Feb 2024 as of this writing, And I love it!
It's not the prettiest typewriter has an ugle good look to it but it's an easy to use work horse. Maybe mine is an exception to the rule, as I hear people hate on this machine for the way it types and feels, but mine is awesome, firm yet soft to touch, mine feels good and sounds good.
I don't understand the hate, again maybe mine is a golden goose meaning it's not like the others. Mine just eats the blank page and fills the basket with work.
Thanks for this video, I have been doing a light cleaning on mine but would like to do a break down and perform a more thorough cleaning. Thumbs up and I subscribed, by the way, Duane sent me here.
And always a thumbs 👍 from me.

I have a Safari, it works, probably nobody’s favorite typewriter. Cleaned the margin rack, took longer to get the back carriage cover off and back on than it took to clean and lube. No escapement issue, surprisingly.

Amazing. I have a 1966 Royal Caravan that my Mom gave me when I was 16 years old. Still looks like new. This was back n 1966. Yes, I am 73 now. Types good but sometimes it skips a space. Can you do a video on how to fix that? Thanks and I really enjoy your videos.

Lol, away goes the water displacer =D. It's useful stuff though. Just not as lube. Maybe I'm not a purist =S.
I love seeing you take apart machines. Your experience shows really well!

Great video. I have a 1966 Royal Caravan that my Mom gave to me when I was taking a typewriter class in High School. I still have it today and still looks like new and types great. All I did was replaced the ribbon. I also own I believe a 1965 Royal Aristocrat, which also looks like it just came out of the store and that to types well. But once in a while my Caravan would skip a space after I use the capital letter. Any clues on how to adjust that?

This was so cool, thanks! I know nothing about typewriters but picked up a tomato-red Royal Safari at an antique store today. It definitely needs some repairs. Is it worth taking to a pro, or should I try to diy it?

Is it just me or does this typewriter have a weird touch? It feels disconnected, like I’m typing in marbles. Also mine has a flaw where when you don’t do a carriage return hard enough, the next line will start one tick down from your left margin setting.

The left margin does have a bit too much spring in it and if you don’t give it the beans on a return it will miss that first space. You can tune the trip point on the escapement to get a better type feel on them. A lot of times the trip points for the typebars are far away from the platen and that can make it feel like pushing through mush. It’s all that wasted movement after the trip point.

@@HotRodTypewriterHow do I adjust the escapement? It seems buried and what do I even use to adjust it. Do I need a wrench to loosen a nut then tighten a screw?

To be honest, my Royals are not my best typers. They look great, but if you are a touch typist, the throws tend to be a bit long, and on one of my Royals, the letters operated by my left pinky are way too long, causing them to fail to reach the ribbon and paper. Someone who two-finger types would miss this fault.
