    I gotta be honest with you. This looks cooler than cyberpunk. This feels like something Casio would’ve legitimately released in 1994

      Cyberpunk isn’t an aesthetic, it’s an idea. Often the designs are just objects from the 80s or 90s. This watch is so sick it’s perfect in any era

      @ bro what the fuck are you talking about? fucking compare a golf mk1 to a Thornton galena. Legit 80s vs Cyberpunk.

    Am I the only one that thinks a weird glitchy flash every time the screen turns on is a cool cyberpunk aesthetic detail? Think how hard it would be to implement that animation deliberately

    I loved the discussion around the different paradigms of the 3d software. This is something I struggled with while learning 3d modelling. I always wanted the first video in a tutorial to explain the /approach/ of the software, but it never happened

    • @harmonic5107
      @harmonic5107 22 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      Same! I didn't know that I needed to use the 2d sketches to get tinkercad functionality.
      I'm sure if I had googled it, that would have been obvious. But written words I struggle with understanding. The explanation in the video was great.

    You can do parametric work in Blender too. Instead of applying the Modifier, parent the Cylinder to the Cube and then hide the Cylinder. Now you can adjust the Cylinder when ever you need and if you move the Cube the Hole stays were it is. I've been doing all my modeling for 3D Printing that way.
    Blenders only pain in the rear, for precision modeling, so far has been fillets and chamfers.

    • @abetoday
      @abetoday  26 วันที่ผ่านมา +16

      Definitely! I originally had a mention that all sufficiently complex modeling tools blur those lines. Blender is definitely a tool with a million ways to do stuff so I decided to describe the more common way it’s used, but you’re def right!

    • @JeanLescure
      @JeanLescure 21 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      There's also Blender ND (Non-Destructive) add-on, that basically turns blender into a parametric CAD software on steroids, and it's super easy to learn :)

    It’s kind of crazy how weird it must have been to attach a watch to your wrist. Like “you know, what if I just strapped my pocket watch to my wrist?”

    • @AttilaAsztalos
      @AttilaAsztalos 25 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      Now me just have to get over doing the same to our phones, and we could finally enjoy wearing our wrist smartcomms in the most sensible place they can be kept - always ready for easy use...

    • @hoangthi10601
      @hoangthi10601 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

      that's actually what WWI soldiers did, wristwatch was first considered something for women and pocket watch for men, but in WWI, having to pull out the watch to check the time is too hard in such a harsh condition in the trenches, the soldiers start strapping pocket watches to their wrist, which leads to the popularization of wristwatches for men. The reason they don't like wrist watch at first due to its inaccuracy as well as the pocket watch is some sort of statement piece.

    just a quick clarification, in blender, you dont need to apply the bool modifier. in fact, what you should do is hide the cylinder (by clicking the eye icon on the collection tab) and you'll see the effect so long as it is set to difference!

    I love how you navigated that unpredictable process-delving into unexpected issues, like that ghostly startup flicker, and hacking your way around the limitations of available tech (replacing that on/off command was genius!). And the iterative 3D printing feels like a DIY version of a high-tech workshop, making and remaking every component to capture that sci-fi look. Plus, the fact that you’ve got multiple power sources, a sleek interface, and modularity built in-it’s genuinely a piece that looks both historically inspired and like it rolled out of an alternate universe! That little nod to making it look like a cat toy at the end? Pure gold.

    As a product designer here are some drawing tips: use long strokes, draw with the whole arm not only wrists, i recommend using a blue and red mechanical pencil for sketching and a technical drawing pen like a 05-08 and only using the chisel tip on the marker. To get better train circles and learn perspective, if you want amazing compositions just go crazy do everything on a small page and don't leave it till you fill it.

    Another great build! I ran into the same issue you had at 16:35 while working on my dice roller (inspired by yours, thank you), which is designed around the idea of a pocket watch as well. The way I got around it was a small modification to the library so it didn't turn on the backlight. I had written a class to manage the backlight anyaway, so this worked out really well and I just turn on the backlight when my code is ready for it.
    Something I learned and implemented for my dice roller that could work for this is just putting the rp2040 and gc9a01 to sleep until it's needed. Obviously the overall battery life will be much lower since it will always be running but I was able to get the dice roller's power usage while dormant pretty low. With a 320mah battery the device can run for about 4 hours of constant, non-stop, use (not realistic usage) but will last several days, easily, if you weren't using it. I just added a small on-off switch so I could turn it off if I knew I wasn't going to be using it for an extended period of time. A 100mah battery is a different story but thought I would share that anyway.
    Also, just to mention, I am using the Waveshare rp2040 1.28in LCD Touch screen. All of the electronics are on one board so there's a bit more room behind the LCD to work with. More room for activities (and bigger batteries).
    Keep up the good work, always a good day when I see a new video from you.

    You could time the backlight to come on only once the display is stable. Masking the visibility of the display like this might be more impactful.
    Also, if you used an Amoled board (lilygo T-Display-S3-amoled-1.43) there is no backlight and the pixels fade in gracefully over approx 0.2s after power is applied.

    What the heck this is so cool! I can totally see this being real. It gives me vibes like someone far in the future found old tech from the forgotten era of the 90s - like Fallout sort of vibes but if it happened in the 90s instead.

    I Think that smartphones have proven we very much crave a modern day pocket smartwatch. Smaller than a phone, but bigger than a smartwatch. I am massively loving the size of the Galaxy Zflip 5 front screen. I would love a device which was just that.

    Love this! I've often loved the idea of having a "smart" pocket watch. its silly really, since a smartphone essentially IS a smart pocket watch,. But right now, I'm in the position where I am using a 8.6" tablet as my phone! it'd be awesome to keep it in my sling bag, and have a pocket watch like this to feed me information like caller ID and notifications hehe (i don't find wristwatches all that comfortable) How hard would it be to add that kinda functionality to this project I wonder.....

    At 10:54 the components that you are looking to solder to is white. It's probably a little tiny capacitor, but that really doesn't matter. Looking back at the board layout at 10:50 that PWR_EN signal is also connected to the little black part next to that little white part (the little black part is a resistor). This is good. That means that you can solder your wire to the same end of both of those parts without worrying about shorting anything out. It's so small, you may have accidentally bridged to the resistor from the cap, but again that doesn't matter because as far as the circuit is concerned they are the same point. Just a quick note for anyone else who accidentally lifts the pads when removing the switch.
