His stuff in ATLA was great but oh man in Korra you can just tell he went through a whole training arc and absolutely killed it. I tear up for no reason on the ending alone
Korra is one of the most amazing TV show scores I've heard in a long time. The way it blends traditional western hollywood score, and this eastern/american jazz fusion; it doesn't just make you feel stuff like it did in ATLA, it actually becomes part of the world. You can't think of republic city without hearing Jeremey's music in the back of your mind.
Jeremy Zuckerman is without a doubt partially responsible for elevating kids TV to a whole new level. ATLA set the bar so high for animated TV moving forward!
Would say that the Hans Zimmer of Cartoons would be James L. Venable, who did Samurai Jack that used a lot of styles of music in each country and situation in the show. And at the same time, Kevin Kiner as the John Williams of cartoons.
Zimmer is a hack who offloads most of the actual scoring work to [underpaid] people who work for him, and then takes the credit for it. Just by writing his own music, Jeremy is leaps and bounds above him, with more integrity to boot.
4:50 “Kids are emotional beings just like adults. They just don’t have the language sometimes.” Such a simple thing that most people forget 🥹 I think this way of thinking/understanding that makes his music so wonderful and impactful. I’m glad they were just as enthusiastic about showing the dark moments as much as the lighter ones.
Yes! I remember my delicate auditory taste from childhood; as a child I felt even more subtly the difference between high-quality and low-quality music. Children notice everything, and what is done with love will not be forgotten.
"Kids are emotional beings just like adults, they just don't have the language sometimes" - this quote summarises not only ATLA's way of thinking towards their soundtrack, but towards the series as a whole. Beautiful.
Zuckerman's score is more often than not the Avatar element that elicits emotion from the viewer. Subtract his score from some of Avatar's iconic scene's and suddenly they don't quite have the same emotional impact. He did a magnificent job. This is an amazing interview, too, btw.
As I read your comment, a scene that instantly comes to my mind is the final Agni Kai between Zuko & Azula. The score, with that imagery was phenomenal!!
^ the Final Agni Kai is a cinematic masterpiece, and the dialogue doesn’t even begin until (I believe) 2 and a half minutes in. Full credit to the score for elevating it to where it stands.
Even with the Netflix teaser, I started crying as soon as the music kicked in at the end. I read the comments and so many people said exactly the same thing. The same goes for the finale of the series, when Zuko gives his speech about the Fire Lord and the Avatar working together and bringing in a new era of peace and kindness. When that music hits, I cry so much.
I think the erhu for Korra was perfect bc it has a slightly sad sound and sort of symbolized that the fans would be kind of mourning Aang while enjoying Korra.
When I was in high school, I remember Jeremy participated in a charity auction and offered up two signed scores, “Peace” from ATLA and “Service and Sacrifice” from LOK. I was so happy when I won the score for Service and Sacrifice and Jeremy was also kind enough to write me a letter with it. He shared a little insight on the composition of that piece where he almost “didn’t get it right.” I believe it was something about basing the melody the melody around the 5th of the chord rather than the root, but once he made the change it all fell into place. I still have that score framed in my room and it’s a constant reminder of the profound influence the music of Avatar has had on me.
Wow, you are so incredibly lucky! That's amazing!! Service and Sacrifice gives me chills and never fails to make me cry. It's so beautiful. I really hope they end up releasing the OSTs for the rest of LoK in addition to Books 2 & 3 of AtLA.
His theme that he created with Korra vs Zaheer in the book 3 finale, when they were flying, was incredible. My favorite soundtrack. But the rest was phenomenal as well!

I doubt they would have anywhere near that effect without the amazing well considered music!!! The fact a whole bunch of that was done just with a few people and multiple samples just blows my mind.

My parents were arguing in the background(pretty usual, but this one was getting a bit out of hand I guess) because the cops ended up showing up and coming in the room where I was watching avatar. They told me id have to come with them. I asked them if I could finish my show. They did say no. But my point is this show was an escape for me as a kid. Thank you for that.
Listening to Jeremy talking honestly abut his work and hearing it partly gave me such big goosebumps. Man, for real. There will never be any other soundtrack that will get be like Avatar:TLA did. I'm really can't wait for the live action series of Avatar with the iconic music and hoping the plot will be just like the original after watching this video, who's in?
@@almas4663How can you know that? It isn’t out yet and the original creators are making movies in the Avatar world. At best, the live action is a remake of a story that was already great. Animation to live action doesn’t exactly have a great history, even with One Piece taken into account.
@@hyperdeath84 With Animation to Live Action I at least can be certain I will love it. And even if it turns out bad, it's not like it'll harm the original in any sorta way. Meanwhile, a new cash grab movie by the original creators is gonna force itself into the lore, harming my perception of this franchise as a whole. I will never forgive the creators for introducing Wan and ruining Mai x Zuko and Sokka x Suki
Other than the music in the teaser, how much of Jeremy’s original score Netflix keeps remains to be seen. So far on IMDB, the new composer Takeshi Furukawa is the only one credited for the music but come Feb 22, we’ll know then for sure.
@@Auth0R_M0RGaN The new composer confirmed that he was allowed to rely heavily on the original music. So just like in the trailer - The music is gonna be the same

Avatar is my favorite show of All - Time!!! And Jeremy as a Animator in college and all of that I can say music is the main piece in animation that makes it standout, music is a beautiful thing and I’m glad the music in Avatar is so great and beautifully, Thank you Jeremy for giving us bangers.💯🙏🏾🙌🏾
Thank you so much for your earnest dedication to the Avatar universe, Jeremy. What you did for the show was monumental. Both ATLA and LOK have held my hand through life and will continue to do so. Best series ever made.
This is SUCH an amazing interview. Forever thankful for the work Jeremy did on this series. Hope he’s doing the live action series too!! It’s especially impressive given how relatively new he was at the time of doing this. What a legend. Completely defined what the ATLA universe should sound like. Jeremy, we appreciate you, dude!!
Actual Goosebumps on the new "Aang becomes Ocean" music with the live orchestra. Crazy how amazing it sounds, can't wait for the live action and to have those memories come back in a new way.
I met Jeremy at the Grove. He was signing a vinyl record of Book 1 Water and it was awesome talking to him. He said his favorite character is Suki and told him that his music is up there with John Williams and Hans Zimmer. Can't wait to see his live concert when he comes to Hollywood and L.A.
People are DEFINITELY listening, Jeremy, and we are DEFINITELY interested in hearing the music on its own. It deserves to shine. I hope you re-record and release all the music for ATLA seasons 2 and 3, and Korra as well, so we can enjoy them in their full glory. I’ll happily wait another 18 years!!
I can not hear this guy's music without crying. So much expressiveness and beauty, also inspirational. I even cried with the music for all the Netflix live action.
I am pretty sure that the music of this show contributed to a huge percentage of its overall success. I also can confirm that the music heals, a lot. It had helped me with depression a few years back and I'll always be thankful for that. ❤
as a young kid i already knew it was a great show. loved it from the start. and now after all this years its still my favorite show. think i watched it more then 20 times
Amazing stuff, Jeremy. One of the most eclectic, emotional, and fascinating pieces of media music of this century. I look forward to future re-recordings of the Avatar soundtrack! It deserves this much attention and love.
*When I was struggling with sleep paralysis, the instrumentals from avatar the last Airbender where part of the soundtracks I used to help me sleep, they're sooooo calm, smooth, and just out of this world😌*
One of the best soundtracks I’ve ever heard in my life, ATLA had such an incredible range of sounds and they all evoked so much, from comedic tracks to deeply melancholic stuff, the palette was masterful.
I gained a new appreciation of the track Aang Becomes Ocean after watching the Netflix remake and realized I missed hearing that track. It was still an incredible scene but it made me look up the track I barely remembered and I am blown away by the emotions it conveys. All the grief and the rage nearly brings me to tears. Upon further reflection, this track uses simple drawn out string chords that results in one of the most emotional scenes of its seasons. Much like one of my favorite tracks in book 3: The Last Agni Kai.
I keep coming back to ATLA's soundtrack, the best in the emotional world-building. Such a magnificent job! Thanks Jeremy for making something so classic and timeless
It's wild to think that he cut his teeth, so to speak, on ATLA of all things. You would've never known that most of his TV experience before this was with commercials.
Jeremy is super underrated, which begs the question of why his music from ATLA and LOK are not available on Spotify or Apple Music. As I'm writing this Book 1 of ATLA was just uploaded on Spotify. Hope the rest of ATLA and LOK will also be out there sooner rather than later.
Read somewhere Jeremy Zuckerman is not involved in the Netflix Live Version much like the original creators. I know the original theme was in the teaser trailer but be interesting how much of Jeremy’s original score ends up in the new adaptation or if they’re gonna completely go with the new guys work.
@christamenash5775 No, that's Kevin Kiner lol not Jeremy. And neither him nor Jeremy scored the live action Netflix series. You may be thinking of Dave Filoni who directed and storyboarded much of the first season of ATLA then ran CW with George Lucas, or Dee Bradley Baker who voiced Appa and then the Clones in SW.
Thanks for this video, this is amazing. TLA and LoK are some of my favourite stories of all time and I dare say they wouldn't have been that impactful without Jeremys music.
The tough part is gonna be them doing serious Aang. I think light hearted Aang is easy to do but to make him that but intimidating with leadership and brave qualities is a balancing act the anime does perfect. When Aang cried we cried, when he laughed we laughed, and when he got serious we sat on the edge of our seats waiting to see what he would do. Give us a strong Zuko and a Emotional Aang. Give us what the anime did so well, character development
I really, really loved what Zuckerman said in the beginning. How children have an innate emotional intelligence that so many shows ignore. They can understand grief, anger, joy, love, everything. And he helped to bring everything to life. I listened to the Avatar intro that was recently rereleased and I cried listneing to it all over again.
I am so excited that I got tickets to see this. I cannot wait. ATLA is my favorite show of all time and I am already tearing up while watching this interview. I just know I'm going to be sobbing in the audience. I really wish I could tell Zuckerman how the music for ATLA impacted me, and continues to impact me with each rewatch of the show. Music is one of the most important things in my life. I truly feel music and I love listening to all types of music. This show has been one of the constants in my life. I can always put it on when I need comfort, when I need something. I always feel like the show keeps me company when I need it most. It relaxes me, it makes me feel really deep intense emotions, and it makes me happy. It makes me laugh and cry and ache and all the wonderful feelings a piece of art should make you feel. The amount of thought and care and effort that went into this show was truly amazing. It's a masterpiece. It's art in such a way that brings all types of art together and creates something so unique and heartfelt and impactful. Every little detail was carefully thought out. The show was cared for. I could really feel that. I will never tire of this show, or the music, or the art, or the script, or the sound design, or the animation, or the voice acting. Every single thing made this show what it is. And I will always love it. I am so grateful that this show exists. It is truly one of the best shows ever made. It's... perfect.
The music from ATLA still gives me chills just like it did when I first watched the show as a kid. Everything from this show is pure perfection and beauty! To everyone that worked on this show and made it a reality, thank you!
i was born in 2005, so i grew up with avatar in a lot of ways. i genuinely can’t remember a time in my life when i didn’t know what it was. i don’t remember watching it for the first time, because the show and its soundtrack have always just _been_ there. so i’d be lying if i said this video didn’t make me inexplicably emotional

I loved the ATLA soundtrack, but to me there was a huge jump in quality and depth in the Korra soundtrack. I'd love to see ATLA redone with some of the knowledge and techniques learned and used in Korra :)

Sometimes I’m going about life and just randomly sing it :,)
I'm really can't wait for the live action series of Avatar with the iconic music and hoping the plot will be just like the original after watching this video, who's in?
@Kyle_ELLive Action is much better than any new Avatar content.
So just like in the trailer - The music is gonna be the same
„kids are emotional beings, just like adults. they just don’t have the language sometimes.“
everyone who worked on this show was not just brilliant in their doing, but an amazing, thoughtful and reflected human being.
I listened to your ATLA music while I work for HOURS and HOURS. I cannot express how excited I am for this remastering.
Avatar wouldn't be the same without their work, huge respect, awesome art you did
Long live Jeremy and The Track Team for bringing an essential part of Bryke's world to life.
Holy moly if they come out with a remastered soundtrack CD for the entire series or even vinyl they can take ALL my money.
I hope this is released as an album or on Spotify. This music deserves being released on its own.
I have been wanting that for the last 15 years haha
You created the music that will go down in history as one of the greatest show and music that all remembers
I wish he'd talked about the Zuko Azula agni kai! Some of my favorite music ever on television. What a talented dude
One of the best soundtrack in the history of cinema
The heart and passion he gave for this show is shown in every note and beat. Beautiful.
His score in both shows is absolutely fantastic. It definitely had an impact on me as a composer myself. :')
Avatar The Last Airbender music is the best! I'm getting emotional every time I hear it.
Amazing stuff, Jeremy. One of the most eclectic, emotional, and fascinating pieces of media music of this century. I look forward to future re-recordings of the Avatar soundtrack! It deserves this much attention and love.
*When I was struggling with sleep paralysis, the instrumentals from avatar the last Airbender where part of the soundtracks I used to help me sleep, they're sooooo calm, smooth, and just out of this world😌*
Of of the best composers of all time, insane attention to detail and the music fits so well with every scene.
I rescored the Netflix version with the Aang becomes Ocean track if you want to check it out ;)
I keep coming back to ATLA's soundtrack, the best in the emotional world-building. Such a magnificent job! Thanks Jeremy for making something so classic and timeless
Hope we get more of these interviews! With the shows creators, actors, or artists.
Both avatar series, one of the best animations i can re watch over n over. It's so complex and detail from plot, background sound etc.
I am trusting him myself cause I love the work he did on the clone wars ❤
@@christamenash5775Time will tell 👍🏽
@@christamenash5775What? Jeremy worked on CW? You sure?
@@kevinzhang6623the guy that did the score in the live action did the score in the clone wars ❤
Avatar is not anime. This is American serial
@@УилкиТутытам chill out. I was trynna save some characters
The music is intoxicating 13years now since I first watched ATLA.
Thank you Jeremy Zuckerman for all of this amazing music, my personal favorite is korra's ending
I love all the music in ATLA❤️ best series ever.
i was born in 2005, so i grew up with avatar in a lot of ways. i genuinely can’t remember a time in my life when i didn’t know what it was. i don’t remember watching it for the first time, because the show and its soundtrack have always just _been_ there. so i’d be lying if i said this video didn’t make me inexplicably emotional
I'm totally crying tears of joy! Hearing Jeremy's perspective of Avatar is brilliant. I'm so lucky to have lived when this fantastic team created such a meaningful story. Thank you!
Nothing will make me tear up faster than Jeremy’s work… so moving and powerful, I feel it in my soul.
The music for these shows has always been so stunning and such a huge part of why the emotion hits hard. It was beautiful to hear the stories behind it. Thank you Jeremy!
I loved the ATLA soundtrack, but to me there was a huge jump in quality and depth in the Korra soundtrack. I'd love to see ATLA redone with some of the knowledge and techniques learned and used in Korra :)
I agree, the Korra soundtrack is beautiful and helped put the show up there next to atla for me.
It would be incredible if the soundtrack would be on Spotify!
Really thank you! Avatar won’t be the same without this music, you are amazing!
Can’t wait once all the seasons are on streaming! hearing the music of the finale of Avatar was a big reason I did band in middle school
Crying in the club rn. Thank you Jeremy Zuckerman
Just binged a bunch of panels and videos from the cast. Thanks for shouting out the podcast! Can't wait to start listening:)
Tales from the vine is a truly beautiful and sad song 🥺
8:50 being indonesian im so proud that our local music inspired the avatar composer thank you...😊
Last air Bender, you guys are a legend you made my childhood watching from Africa Zambia ✌️
As an Indonesia, I'm proud of the sun warrior music is inspired by Balinese culture. Thank you dear Jeremy, I like the way you make the sound each character and act. You're so genius!
Chills and crying
I was always blown away with ATLA music and sound choice. The instruments were just perfectly chosen too, super immersive. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! I wish this video was out sooner, I did research a lot on ATLA sound design for my final assingment at Uni, but due to insufficient information needed to pass on it.
Anyways, great sound work! You guys made a masterpiece!
Finally after all these years, I can listen to this on streaming. Do we know when Jeremy will do Book 2 and Book 3? Possibly Korra as well?
VERY impressive... just thinking about bringing old sessions into today's version of pro tools sound like an enormous pain LOL glad to see the ATLA soundtrack is finally getting the star treatment it so rightly deserves!! getting to hear 'aang becomes ocean' with a live orchestra was just *chefs kiss*
such a gifted guy. The music in both ATLA and Korra (Korra, service and sacrifice, all time fave!!) are beyond amazing. So fascinating
