People could still be Christian and not be part of that commune, while others who are part of commune can mingle among the general economy as well. As a child, I grew up thinking Jesus was my best friend and I wanted to do what he taught but as I grew older, the church and his teachings were so wildly different that I quit the church. I never stopped thinking Jesus was right about a lot of things though.

Uh... To go one step further, Jesus didn't marry. He wasn't married to a sex worker. He loved her but I don't recall any part of the biblical text about him being married. Actually he had many unmarried female friends who he was very close to, which would have been something to see in those days, and that's not to mention all his other friends who were tax collectors, fishermen, and all different types of misfits. But when it comes to influence, he just can't compete with Martin Luther (at least for continental Europe). But as far as I can make out, they actually did it at roughly the same time (Luther was not the only one who worked on the project of "his" bible, and there were earlier translations into German as I've just learned), and both created new words and phrases for their respective language that are still in use today. I'll keep this in mind.
I'm a socialist and a Christian (Episcopalian) in America and let me tell you, it is extremely hard to feel confident in my faith when the entire narrative in this country is constructed by right-wing evangelicals. Whenever I feel doubt due to these crowds, I just remember that Jesus' entire message was firmly against stances of hate and bigotry.

I think I could find a centrist reading in Christ's teachings. At least when it comes to the Jesus described in NT. I suspect that the OG Christ was more radical So according to NT Jesus didn't really come down to Earth to start a political revolution. His job was to spread the good message and be sacrificed. It's potentially a mythological rationale for extreme moral relativism - an extreme moral relativism that might permit atrocities. Wait till they find out that Jesus (Isa) is also a very important prophet in Islam and Islam has a lot of left wing economic ideas encouraged like paying taxes and donating to the poor. Islam is so against the idea of being wasteful that if you do not use something you buy, like an article of clothing for a certain amount of time you are required to pay a tax on it. The only real conservative facets Islam preaches is more on the social side, such as gendered roles and rules that differ based on your sex, such as the hijab requirements for men and women.

This depends on whether you take the words as they claim to use them or as they do use them. For example, if you see someone forcibly take food from a child, some people will say this is very un-Christian, others will point to all the Christians doing it and say the sandal fits.

I don’t want to act that there isn’t a lot of terrible oppressive stuff in the Hebrew Bible, but I want to caution people who are culturally Christian from acting like Christian interpretations of the Old Testament are the same as Jewish interpretations. A common one is ‘Old Testament god is vengeful Jesus is forgiving’. This is actually directly from early anti Jewish propaganda in christian rome. There are many conflicting portrayals of god in the Hebrew Bible, and basically everything Jesus does and says in the NT is a paraphrase of something written in an older scripture. trying to resolve these contradictions is largely why most jews came to understand god as nondualistic and impersonal. god, like nature, is both kind and cruel, and is so far beyond our understanding that sitting with the contradictions is one of the fundamental parts of Jewish faith. Imo Christian’s, particularly modern ones, are more interested in explaining away contradictions than they are accepting them. I mean Catholics invented original sin and then had to invent the immaculate conception because of the problem this created. Again, not that Judaism has not been oppressive, but if we only understand jews and Judaism through the Christian lens we are getting a very distorted picture

I've read Friedrich Engels' article "On the History of Early Christianity" (which is only 28 pages long and I highly recommend to read it), and I can surely say that early Christians' communes were mostly anarchist in nature: 1. They were growing their own food, making their own tools etc. 2. Had no monetary relationships between themselves. 3. Had no distinct leader who would hold all the power to choose what the group will do. 4. All work was done voluntary, for the sake of survival and devotion to God and Jesus Christ.
At this point, woke is just an umbrella term for anything the right doesn’t like. Essentially, woke=bad, therefore, bad=woke. We were told this quote stayed hung up to continuously remind us to be more Christ-like in nature, to show the love of Jesus to others around us through our actions and not to wear Christianity as an armour against criticism of our behavior. That quote is now maligned by hoards of Christians who were completely unable to face the reality of their own hypocrisy. It was because of that reminder that I left the church behind as an adult. Maybe God exists. But if I have to believe and act like Conservative Christians do in order to make it into heaven, I'd rather be literally anywhere else.
Every person of faith ends up creating a God in their own image. Those who like punishment create an angry, vengeful God. Those who want the freedom to do whatever they want create a liberal or indifferent God. Those who want a lot of stuff create a SantaClaus-type God who just sprinkles gifts upon them. I'm not convinced anyone has ever gotten it 100% "right"
My concept of God is that they just started the simulation and observe how it all plays out. To us, it's been millions of years of evolution but to a cosmic entity that we can not even begin to comprehend......🫣🤷🏻♀️
I'm not shocked. Although there may be some problematic elements in the Bible (if one follows it from a fundamental perspective); Jesus has been portrayed as kind, and arguably left leaning in the Bible. This is the message that Liberation Theologians like MLK Jr and Desmond Tutu have been trying to explain about Jesus, and how they have used that message to help liberate those who are oppressed.
They also reject Martin Luther's teachings. He hated when political leaders took bribes/lobbyists. Now they refuse to live without such concessions. He also said belief alone was the key to salvation, and yet they're still the biggest moral busybodies with the least interest in the general public's good.
Looks like Jesus Christ has finally given them a reality check. Even though I am a communist, I like this "Second Coming of the Christ" thing that has now brought chaos onto the "Conservatives" in America.

I’m an atheist now, but when I was 13 going through confirmation in my church, I was beginning to notice how incongruous the words I was reading in the bible were with how most people in that church conducted themselves. The pastors themselves were fine (similar to the pastor mentioned in this video), but there was a pretty sizable number of people who would talk smack behind other congregants’ backs just out in the open because they weren’t around to hear it. There was almost this sense of moral superiority and feelings of invincibility around these people, because they believed they could just act terrible to others and be justified because they were active in the church so it canceled out. And if they did do something wrong, they could just pray about it and move on. I never once saw any of these people try to better themselves of their own volition in the 8 years I was there.

Jesus the man existed in the Roman Census and I’m in the camp he was a real person just due to some records we have, but also he wasn’t the only doomsday preacher at the time. He also considered himself a Jewish teacher and a sect of Judaism, one of many. After he died he just had a small subset of followers, alongside a bunch of other sects. It’s really fascinating how Paul was the true birth of Christianity, taking a small sect and making missionaries, denouncing the current faiths etc. Sometimes I wonder what the world would have been like if not for Paul. In Medieval England you literally couldn't read it, in that you weren't allowed, couldn't have access to one and they were all in Latin. Most people couldn't even read English let alone Latin. John Wycliffe translated them into English which was seen as radical heresy, and this inspired the Hussites in Bohemia later. Religion has always been about cherry picking the text to suit an agenda. According to polling of atheists, the number one reason they become atheists is that they read the Bible and found out what it actually says. The number two reason, which was my reason, is the hypocrisy and immorality of religious believers. The number three reason, incidentally, is learning more about science.
I've said for years that every person should read it through at least once. Those who disagree with it will then be able to quote it and explain why they disagree with it, and those who claim to believe it will be able to quote it and explain why they believe it/agree with it. Also, it's always better to read sthg for one's self, instead of taking anyone else's word on what it says: the Bible, a contract, an indictment, etc
From what I perceive, conservative Christians tend to believe in Jesus more as a spiritual being than his corporeal, human form. Concentrating on giving their lives over to Jesus so they can go to Heaven, they tend to appeal to the Old testament, and Pauline dogmas, than Jesus's humanity. Jesus is important because He is the way, the door His father's kingdom, through which you *must* go to enter the Kingdom of Heaven I think this combined with the culture of American individualism overrides the sense of communal love that Jesus preached. When you throw nationalism and the myth of America being God's chosen country into the mix it becomes a really toxic potion.
It amazes me how the values I got from my christian upbringing are: love your neighbour, don't judge people, help others if you can, share what you have if others need it, don't be prejudiced against people who are different, take responsibility for your actions... And some of my peers who went to the same church and school as me are like "if you find them threteing, kill them lmao", "I don't care if you suffer, I suffer too and I'm suffering in the name of god". But even they laught at American christians.
I am a *former* Christian who still believes Jesus Christ is God. The "christian" Right is the primary reason I gave up on organized religion. They would have crucified Jesus (the "christian" Right doesn't like Jews). They perpetually disobey Jesus's command to keep religion and politics *SEPARATE* . It's not a new phenomenon. For example the line "it's easier for a rich man to fit through the eye of a needle than pass through the gates of heaven" has always been contested in the most cynical ways. Some saying the "eye of the needle" was actually a real city gate in Jerusalem that was very busy and difficult to enter no matter ones wealth.

Dude, this is crazy, I actually knew Lucas Miles! Lucas went to the same church as my family when I was growing up, he was just under a decade older than me and was good friends with my older sister. He eventually became a youth pastor at that church and he was actually a pretty positive role model for me during my very difficult teenage years and an all-around decent and fun guy. Lucas very much used to be all about the loving and compassionate parts of the Gospel and emphasized the importance of this to the church youth group. Eventually he went and joined this church franchise called Oasis which was very much about community outreach. He wasn't in my life much after this point, but my sister went to his church and maintained a close friendship with him. As the years went on, however, he started becoming involved with prominent figures in the evangelical community and ultimately joined a Christian entertainment production company. From what I understand, it was around this time where he started to become a lot more fundamentalist. Then the rise of Trump and MAGA came and he started embracing extremist beliefs, even going as far as to write a book based around the premise that someone cannot be both a Christian and a liberal. This was around the point that my family, who are all fairly conservative (especially my sister, who regularly attends the National Prayer Breakfast) cut off all contact with Lucas. I recall either my dad or brother-in-law saying that one of them would find Bibles left by him in their mailboxes with passages bookmarked and highlighted in response to arguments that they got into on social media. It genuinely saddens me to see that Lucas has fallen so far that he's now a poster boy for how far American Christianity has strayed from the teachings of Christ. I honestly do think his younger self would be disgusted with what he's become.

Calling Jesus a "Woke Liberal" seems tame... during my Freshman year of Catholic High School (secondary school), I was branded a Communist for quoting the Bible (Acts of the Apostles).
And this... The Gospel of Jesus was originally one book, written by Lazarus in consultation with the Apostles [John 21:24] and published soon after Jesus left them on their own. The religion was hijacked by Rome, the Gospel was broken up scrambled adulterated into a bunch of competing narratives. Later four of those adulterated gospels were canonized with falsely ascribed authorship and a Gnosticism cover-story. It was the finding of an original Gospel of Jesus scroll in Jerusalem that gained the Knights Templar power over the Church and their eventual undoing when the church finally retaliated against them Friday 13th.
Back when I was more confident in my faith (enough to subscribe to a particular sect and type of theism) I drew my socialism from the Book of Acts, my grandad who was an old school Labour trade unionist also came from the Social Gospel trend. Socialism in the UK was heavily Christian in the early days

People could still be Christian and not be part of that commune, while others who are part of commune can mingle among the general economy as well. One isn’t forced to be in the commune and can join, leave, rejoin, at will. It was an option not a politics. They love Paul more than Jesus because he was less soft and said what they wanted to hear to support their biases regarding slavery, women's rights and homosexuality, whereas Jesus essentially advocated for communism (Luke 14:33) and also not evangelizing and pushing their beliefs on others, especially praying (Matt. 6:6). Not only that but they reshaped Jesus into their own image: a white skinned man who hated everyone who they hated and adored everything they said they did in the name of the Lord. In reality they didn't care about Jesus' actual teachings but used him as a tool, object, to validate what was right in their own eyes. (Judges 21:25)
The only thing they've ever given a shit about is that he died for their sins. They quote the Pauline Epistles and the OT more than they quote the man they supposedly believe was literally god incarnate

Uh... To go one step further, Jesus didn't marry. He wasn't married to a sex worker. He loved her but I don't recall any part of the biblical text about him being married. But when it comes to influence, he just can't compete with Martin Luther (at least for continental Europe). But as far as I can make out, they actually did it at roughly the same time (Luther was not the only one who worked on the project of "his" bible, and there were earlier translations into German as I've just learned), and both created new words and phrases for their respective language that are still in use today. I'll keep this in mind.
I'm a socialist and a Christian (Episcopalian) in America and let me tell you, it is extremely hard to feel confident in my faith when the entire narrative in this country is constructed by right-wing evangelicals. Whenever I feel doubt due to these crowds, I just remember that Jesus' entire message was firmly against stances of hate and bigotry.

I don’t want to act that there isn’t a lot of terrible oppressive stuff in the Hebrew Bible, but I want to caution people who are culturally Christian from acting like Christian interpretations of the Old Testament are the same as Jewish interpretations. A common one is ‘Old Testament god is vengeful Jesus is forgiving’. This is actually directly from early anti Jewish propaganda in christian rome. There are many conflicting portrayals of god in the Hebrew Bible, and basically everything Jesus does and says in the NT is a paraphrase of something written in an older scripture. trying to resolve these contradictions is largely why most jews came to understand god as nondualistic and impersonal. god, like nature, is both kind and cruel, and is so far beyond our understanding that sitting with the contradictions is one of the fundamental parts of Jewish faith. Imo Christian’s, particularly modern ones, are more interested in explaining away contradictions than they are accepting them. I mean Catholics invented original sin and then had to invent the immaculate conception because of the problem this created. Again, not that Judaism has not been oppressive, but if we only understand jews and Judaism through the Christian lens we are getting a very distorted picture

I've read Friedrich Engels' article "On the History of Early Christianity" (which is only 28 pages long and I highly recommend to read it), and I can surely say that early Christians' communes were mostly anarchist in nature:
1. They were growing their own food, making their own tools etc.
2. Had no monetary relationships between themselves.

The church I attended as a kid always had a photo of that Ghandi quote hanging in the kids classrooms - "I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ."
We were told this quote stayed hung up to continuously remind us to be more Christ-like in nature, to show the love of Jesus to others around us through our actions and not to wear Christianity as an armour against criticism of our behavior.
That quote is now maligned by hoards of Christians who were completely unable to face the reality of their own hypocrisy.
It was because of that reminder that I left the church behind as an adult.

I'm not shocked. Although there may be some problematic elements in the Bible (if one follows it from a fundamental perspective); Jesus has been portrayed as kind, and arguably left leaning in the Bible. This is the message that Liberation Theologians like MLK Jr and Desmond Tutu have been trying to explain about Jesus, and how they have used that message to help liberate those who are oppressed.
They also reject Martin Luther's teachings. He hated when political leaders took bribes/lobbyists. Now they refuse to live without such concessions. He also said belief alone was the key to salvation, and yet they're still the biggest moral busybodies with the least interest in the general public's good.

I’m an atheist now, but when I was 13 going through confirmation in my church, I was beginning to notice how incongruous the words I was reading in the bible were with how most people in that church conducted themselves. The pastors themselves were fine (similar to the pastor mentioned in this video), but there was a pretty sizable number of people who would talk smack behind other congregants’ backs just out in the open because they weren’t around to hear it.
There was almost this sense of moral superiority and feelings of invincibility around these people, because they believed they could just act terrible to others and be justified because they were active in the church so it canceled out. And if they did do something wrong, they could just pray about it and move on.
I never once saw any of these people try to better themselves of their own volition in the 8 years I was there.

Jesus the man existed in the Roman Census and I’m in the camp he was a real person just due to some records we have, but also he wasn’t the only doomsday preacher at the time. He also considered himself a Jewish teacher and a sect of Judaism, one of many. After he died he just had a small subset of followers, alongside a bunch of other sects. It’s really fascinating how Paul was the true birth of Christianity, taking a small sect and making missionaries, denouncing the current faiths etc. Sometimes I wonder what the world would have been like if not for Paul. In Medieval England you literally couldn't read it, in that you weren't allowed, couldn't have access to one and they were all in Latin. Most people couldn't even read English let alone Latin.

According to polling of atheists, the number one reason they become atheists is that they read the Bible and found out what it actually says. The number two reason, which was my reason, is the hypocrisy and immorality of religious believers. The number three reason, incidentally, is learning more about science.
I've said for years that every person should read it through at least once. Those who disagree with it will then be able to quote it and explain why they disagree with it, and those who claim to believe it will be able to quote it and explain why they believe it/agree with it. Also, it's always better to read sthg for one's self, instead of taking anyone else's word on what it says: the Bible, a contract, an indictment, etc

From what I perceive, conservative Christians tend to believe in Jesus more as a spiritual being than his corporeal, human form.
Concentrating on giving their lives over to Jesus so they can go to Heaven, they tend to appeal to the Old testament, and Pauline dogmas, than Jesus's humanity.
Jesus is important because He is the way, the door His father's kingdom, through which you *must* go to enter the Kingdom of Heaven
I think this combined with the culture of American individualism overrides the sense of communal love that Jesus preached.
When you throw nationalism and the myth of America being God's chosen country into the mix it becomes a really toxic potion.
It amazes me how the values I got from my christian upbringing are: love your neighbour, don't judge people, help others if you can, share what you have if others need it, don't be prejudiced against people who are different, take responsibility for your actions... And some of my peers who went to the same church and school as me are like "if you find them threteing, kill them lmao", "I don't care if you suffer, I suffer too and I'm suffering in the name of god". But even they laught at American christians.

It's not a new phenomenon. For example the line "it's easier for a rich man to fit through the eye of a needle than pass through the gates of heaven" has always been contested in the most cynical ways. Some saying the "eye of the needle" was actually a real city gate in Jerusalem that was very busy and difficult to enter no matter ones wealth.
There's a video of Prager talking about "You shall not kill" an that it's actually "not murder". The Mountain Sermon makes it more restrictive.
I remember in school the teacher said it was about spiritual wealth and not about material wealth, which even 11 year old me considered a stretch

Dude, this is crazy, I actually knew Lucas Miles!
Lucas went to the same church as my family when I was growing up, he was just under a decade older than me and was good friends with my older sister. He eventually became a youth pastor at that church and he was actually a pretty positive role model for me during my very difficult teenage years and an all-around decent and fun guy. Lucas very much used to be all about the loving and compassionate parts of the Gospel and emphasized the importance of this to the church youth group.
Eventually he went and joined this church franchise called Oasis which was very much about community outreach. He wasn't in my life much after this point, but my sister went to his church and maintained a close friendship with him. As the years went on, however, he started becoming involved with prominent figures in the evangelical community and ultimately joined a Christian entertainment production company. From what I understand, it was around this time where he started to become a lot more fundamentalist.
Then the rise of Trump and MAGA came and he started embracing extremist beliefs, even going as far as to write a book based around the premise that someone cannot be both a Christian and a liberal. This was around the point that my family, who are all fairly conservative (especially my sister, who regularly attends the National Prayer Breakfast) cut off all contact with Lucas. I recall either my dad or brother-in-law saying that one of them would find Bibles left by him in their mailboxes with passages bookmarked and highlighted in response to arguments that they got into on social media.
It genuinely saddens me to see that Lucas has fallen so far that he's now a poster boy for how far American Christianity has strayed from the teachings of Christ. I honestly do think his younger self would be disgusted with what he's become.
