Hey All, I just got the website launched with all of my build info. I will update it along the way with any new stuff I add. I also have all of my turbo piping on order, going to try to frankenstein some things together to make it work without spending 3k on a custom setup. www.projectrandom.com
Open deck 4 cylinder had to have been a pretty penny spent, props to you guys for making it work. Always love seeing underrated bmw motors get the work that they deserve done.
Hey, I did everything myself for under 900 bucks. Forged rods and pistons and the decking/block modification. Working on the turbo kit now, just pulled the head again to put an Athena cut ring gasket and make sure everything looks good for more boost!
I probably won't get close to 8 unless I dump some serious parts into this thing. I'm looking closer to 500 for reliability. Maybe 6, the pistons are slightly higher compression than stock and there have been some nice aftermarket parts released for the N20 to help make reliable power. The b58 fueling and larger bolt on turbos with the current head set up will get mid 500's pretty easy with what's already on the car. There are a few companies that make upgraded ZF transmissions up to 1500 hp/1200 tq. That will be a must past 450-500.
Definitely, I have had a lot of cars and this is one of my favorites for sure. Just with the motor built and FBO I can feel the potential, from the dig this thing is crazy. My turbo is definitely going out though, the spool time and throttle response is getting worse every day.
Hey there, Nice project, Keep it up! I just wanted to ask you one thing, I also have N20 and it's widely known issue that Timing chain kit is made of literal garbage plastic, Which no matters what, will definitely break down. Why no one has ever made same kit with different material? Can't it be done?
Hey, I haven't seen any different materials for them. It's not too bad changing it out in the car with the right tools. I did it a while back when I changed my head gasket with the motor still in. I would definitely recommend changing it and upgrading the sprockets to the laser etched ones to help with the motor slipping out of time.
I wanted to build my motor but it seems cheaper to buy another car this is interesting to watch would love to see results! I have yet to see a fast n20 besides like 3 of em I know of via the internet this looks like it’ll be #4 lol
I am hoping to get some decent numbers out of this thing lol. I didn't know anything about the lack of aftermarket support but that made me push more. So far as the car sits I have about 5k invested. I picked it up for $2900 with the blown motor and obviously did the work myself. The expensive stuff is going to be the turbo and custom piping. I am going to try and make a manifold myself but who knows how that will turn out haha.
I am in the process of building my website with the info on the build so far. If you have any specific questions let me know, contact info is in my profile. I have everything priced out and with the price of the car included I will hopefully only have an 8k investment, another 5 or so for a transmission if I decide to push it past 500hp
