    Hi Sensei
    I particularly like this video because it summarized several different aspects of performing an ippon. If you could continue making this type of short video on TH-cam, that would be great because I often just loop these and where you have several different aspects it’s good for me to try to learn.
    As far as requesting something that I’d like to learn more Iwould you be able to do a video on, the specific little ways that we move our feet to try and get into our mind I see that sometimes people use a slightly larger step sometimes very small just moving the toes almost sometimes people are moving to the side and forward sometimes people are using foot work like a boxer, and sometimes people are staying fairly stationary there’s a higher level but I dislike if you could make some videos on your just how to move your feet and maybe to practice this during practice so we can then try to improve our foot work when we’re in actual tournaments. OK that’s a big request. Apologies if it’s too much and I really like this video. Thank you very much.

    Great video. Getting the opponent to react at a reasonable distance is one of the main difficulties I'm having for yondan, and most of the time I don't really feel I'm managing to put any pressure at all on my opponent.

    • @Kendotips
      @Kendotips  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      So when someone pressured you or when you feel that someone succeeded at pressuring you, what do they do? Thank you for watching by the way.

    • @djaxupjazz
      @djaxupjazz 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      you need to be truly primed to strike when trying to do seme on someone. If you just close the distance it won't feel like pressure to the opponent. Closely observe what happens when you strike, look at videos of yourself. Try to do the very start of the waza only, then delay. I myself need to be conviced that I am attacking first, otherwise my opponent won't believe me either.

    • @misutaSasaki
      @misutaSasaki 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@djaxupjazz I see... closing the distance way too much before even starting a waza is in fact a common mistake I see at my dojo. I've been trying to improve my seme towards what you described, but very often it feels like I reach a point of no return before getting any reaction, where I either "have" to press forward and attack with no real opportunity, or just abort the waza with the high risk of being a sitting duck for a split second. Maybe I need to believe more in my attacks

    • @misutaSasaki
      @misutaSasaki 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Kendotips Good question.. I get pressured quite easily, but even more so if I feel the opponent is closing in without any care for my kamae. Now that I think about it, my kendo consist of a lot of oji-waza compared to shikake-waza, and my attacks often come as a reaction to the opponent's pressure. Surely a more offensive midset would help...

    great video Jose!
    can you make a small video about adjusting footwork and seme when doing ji-geiko with someone who is in a much lower level ? ex 3rd dan doing jigeiko with 5th kyu?

    I tried slow slide-in motion, but my sensei told me to stop doing this because my opponent would be very easy to anticipate my attack giving them more time to react and do oji waza. I feel it makes sense in some ways. I wonder how you would think about this comment.

    • @Kendotips
      @Kendotips  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes this is not an easy skill and can be frustrating even at advance levels. The "sliding-in" is a way of creating pressure and momentum, but is not always needed, and if you do it for too long, then you can also be in trouble. Do as your sensei says, and try to watch how people use distance and different timings to create an opportunity and attack!

    Too much verbal pseudo explanation. Solution, find a good sensei. He’s the problem, not the solution. You learn in the dojo with good sensei, not this type of explanation piled on ‘explanation’.

    • @Kendotips
      @Kendotips  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for sharing your thoughts and I agree there is no substitute to the dojo, and I m not trying to take away from the teachings of the sensei at dojos I am sharing the knowledge and experiences I have gained. I agree I need to work in the efficiency of my explanation but I disagree strongly on not sharing information. Fortunately we live in a time we have access to information in digital form but teachings and reflection have existed outside of the dojo for centuries.
      I think sharing our ideas online is a great way to start conversations and think about different elements of kendo; for example I would have liked for you to shared your thoughts on how my explanations could have been confusing or be more detailed or perhaps share your explanation. Thank you for taking the time to comment and watching though.

      @@Kendotips ok, but that is not Kendo. You are doing a miss-service to viewers and yourself. So much is missed by endless verbal, and I can add, impolitely, making yourself out as a ‘sensei’. I know finding a good sensei, outside Japan, Korea, US, Canada, plus in some other countries now, is hard to find. It’s what in Japan referred to as pseudo sensei. Your notion ‘sharing on line’ is the problem. ‘Sharing on line’ is the problem. That’s not the Kendo way. It might satisfy ego in your mind, but please resist that temptation and find a real sensei. In the west, this notion ‘sharing information’, while it might work in sports generally, in my opinion is not the way of Kendo. I hesitate to write comments, but I felt the need. Obviously you love Kendo.

    • @Kendotips
      @Kendotips  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So it upsets you that I express my opinions and you consider this a miss-service? because I am sharing my opinions outside of the dojo? would it be any different if I write my thoughts and publish them in a book? Also to who I am making my self as a sensei, and what qualifications do you consider necessary in order to be a sensei? I know several sensei that do share their opinions in video and written word and them as well as many sensei and students of kendo find my efforts a positive contribution to kendo. If you have a problem with online media maybe guiding your students to not consume it would be best and I respect your opinion, as I would also respect your opinion if you were to tell me what is wrong with what I am saying in my videos because I sincerely would like to improve and share correct elements of kendo with the world (which is why I do research and discuss with other sensei and students the content I share). Cheers by the way how long have you been doing kendo, how do you grow in your kendo, do you often travel and practice kendo with a lot of people? if not how do you grow your kendo?

      Hi @johnmaisonneuve9057 Do you ever worry that you preach too much? Concerned that you undercut others by sharing your negative opinions when they are not requested or required? Worried that when you walk into a pub people suddenly find reasons to go elsewhere? There is a solution to this. Just try and [be] nice. It really is not that difficult. Once in a while, just try and say something nice about something and see how it changes people's impressions of you. A gateway to this behaviour is to ... smile once in a while. If you find this difficult, hold a pencil in your mouth - apparently, psychological tests show that this has almost the same impact. Anyway, may I wish you the very best in overcoming this character shortcoming that you appear to have acquired?
