Made me happy and sentimental, too, to see you enjoying the flight aboard the Lufthansa retro 747. My retirement and farewell flight as a Lufthansa qualified first class flight attendant took place in April 2015 aboard this aircraft after flying for 33 years as a Lufthansa flight attendant. Flying first class looked quite different in 1982, smaller seats but HUGE meals. I can still remember cutting a whole Châteaubriand from the cart right in front of the passengers and serving whole lobsters! Not to mention to serve German beer as draft beer right from the barrel. Well, times change.......every era has its face.
That is not really true. For First Class passengers on wide body aircraft there was the change from 2-2-2 to options to more space. The epic 1-2-1 configuration in blue (?), grey/silver was a quantum leap. And closed the gap to Iberia and the former LAN Chile which had 2-1-2 seats a row on the A 340.
Totally agree 86, 88 till 93 I recall outstanding meals in first. Now turn for the worse food wise. Not cut corners on food size or quality or quantity.
@@gluecksdrache2054 You misunderstood me: in First Class on the 747 with Lufthansa there were 2-2 seats in the past, later, on the 747-400 1-1 in the upper deck with a bed aside of each seat, now on the 747-8 2 rows with 1-1 and the last row 1-2-1.

Fun fact... The first 5 windows of the B747 are actually impact resistant against bird strikes as they face forward slightly due to the curve of the nose. 🙂🇦🇺
I’ve been a Lufthansa fan ever since I first flew with them on a 747-400 about 8 years ago (My previous favorite was TWA). Now they’re the top in my mind, not only because of their great service, quality, safety, and fleet, but especially because they’re the last to fly the queen of the skies. I also love the branding: “ drive Porsche, fly Lufthansa”. Very slick. First class on a Lufthansa 747 on my bucket list for sure.

Well it is Sam they know he’s coming so they roll out the red carpet and more. So this wouldn’t be the service a typical passengers would see flying in first class. Not saying their service is bad or bad product it’s amazing. But this is what would be a perfect experience on purpose because they know who he is and what he does.

I love the 747's. So glad to see that Lufthansa is still flying these beautiful birds. I still remember my first time, it was summer directly after my freshman year of high school. My folks and I flew this orange 747 to Honolulu from Dallas, yes it was the old Braniff airlines I was personally hoping for a purple, pink, or lime green plane lol but I still remember that plane. Then the man in black was on our flight, and first class let out right in front of us and there he was Johnny Cash and his entire family. I was I star shock he spoke with for a few minutes and I will never forget that and that 747 orange Braniff.

I enjoyed the view of the landing in LAX very much and seeing the "In-N-Out Burger" fastfood restaurant at the end of the runway where I have enjoyed watching airplanes landing at LAX from there and at the little park across the street👍🙂
I was so lucky to get to fly on this exact airplane (D-ABYT) for my first flight on a 747. Flying on a 747 was something I dreamed of doing as a child and it was the experience of a lifetime. Because of covid the plane was basically empty and I got a whole row to myself and it felt like I was on top of the world. I couldn’t stop smiling the entire flight. I’m lucky to live under flight traffic from LA to Europe so this plane occasionally flys over my house. Sam actually captured my area at 9:42. Every time she flys over I have to drop everything I’m doing and just marvel at her. I’m grateful to have gotten the opportunity to fly on the Queen before it’s too late. I’d have to say D-ABYT definitely changed my life. I can now also say I’ve been on the same plane as Sam😂

If you are going to have to spend extra time flying on a 747 due to headwinds, it might as well be in first class👍🙂 I flew to Frankfurt from Los Angels in 2009 on a Lufthansa 747-400, flying coach but it felt like I was flying in first class, compared to other airlines that I have flown on, even including free alcoholic drinks that appeared to have no limits and the flight attendants were great and made the whole flight a great experience for me, especially since it was my first time flying on a 747✈👍🙂

German service can be terrible sometimes. Especially customer support. I flew several times on LH first. And most times was ok, but in 2 of them i had very rude flight attendants. Swiss is much better

I probably built that aircraft. I worked for Boeing for 5 years as a heavy structures mechanic in the 46-48 section, (tail section joining the pressure dome and skin laps). I also built the 41-42 section for 6 months (nose section). Flying Lufthansa 1st class has always been on my bucket list. They in my opinion are the premier experience for any airline company. I envy you for the opportunity and am grateful for their hospitality of your shared experience. I know they wined and dined you for clout and that's ok but as an Boeing employee who was never even allowed to walk through a finished product; to see this is exciting never the less. Best wishes to Lufthansa and the dying undefeated "Queen of the Skies" 747. P.S. please stop calling it "retro". The -800 is as modern and luxurious of an aircraft the world will ever see. It's sad it's a dead program.
I think he’s referring to the retro livery his plane was painted in. Surely, anybody flying the 747-8 would know the plane it self is anything but retro. Such a gorgeous aircraft - the B747 in all her forms will always rule the sky as The Queen.
I love the 747-8. The times of riding on the second floor. And where Sam sat. Such a big plane. But just really neat especially with the service. Once I had the blessing of family to book the entire first class. Super cool service
Hi Sam, just for your info. Sinn is a very respectable German watch company. The watch pouch is for people who like/ need to bring another watch to travel. For a lot of First class presengers, they will have expensive formal watches. Sinn made more sporty style watches, who like to remind you to check out their catalog and bring one or two home.
I flew First Class with BA four years ago and the difference here is monumental.. Staff are attentive, you're being treated well.. My flight, boarding the plane felt no different to boarding in Economy, staff were there and friendly but didn't have a huge amount of contact, on my outbound flight I didn't even get an amenity bag, neither did my daughter. The only time I really felt like anything special was being able to eat with my daughter at a table between us, setting this up was the only time the staff really made me feel like I was paying for something extra. Fly First on BA was such a let down that I will never do it again, would rather save some money and fly Business.
People like Me who cannot afford the First Class and Business Class see the world through Your eyes... Wish You more n more beautiful journeys so that we can live a part of Your life .... Cheers !

Great video, its so sad the mighty 747 is disappearing from the skies, around half an hour from my home, there is a long line of 747s waiting to be parted out.
My last LH 748 first class flight was Dec 31 from PVG to FRA. It was empty on the nose of the cabin. Upon arrival, I received email about sars like virus since I was in Wuhan just days before… and I had only flew few times since then. Missed the 748.

Although i understand the reasoning behind leaving the 747 (4) engines, I still miss the Jumbo a lot. Flying the 777 is not the same! Maybe Lufthansa has another vision.
for Lufthansa as they are very big on cargo the 747 makes a lot of sense. The bigger the aircraft the more cargo it can take. in some routs the passengers are just a bonus.
@@julosx almost all passenger aircrafts if not all have a cargo holt. they often hold more then only the luggage of the people flying. Like mail, flowers, medication, books or about anything people want to fly over because they need it with in days and not weeks. for the majority that cargo is taken care by passenger aircrafts as they already fly a scheduled fixed route.
@julosx Lufthansa Cargo is a pretty big operation. Not as big as UPS or FedEx, but still impressive. They choose MD-11’s and 777’s mostly for their cargo operations. Would be cool to see them convert their old 747 passenger planes to cargo versions (BCF), but Lufthansa puts so many hours on their passenger planes, they’re pretty well spent by the time they retire them.
I was flying a lot with Lufthansa in BC and was always alone at the senator lounge! 😂 Their services is beyond perfect! Once, the business class & first was full and I had to travel premium. They still gave me full business class service and had the seat next to me empty for a better experience! I traveled with all the companies! Lufthansa is def one of the best 🎉
Love your travel logs Sam. Everytime we fly out of FRA we book 1st class and make sure we start our journey at the Lufthansa First Class terminal. There is no better place to start a journey than that. Other airlines have great 1st class seating and amenities, Lufthansa is quality in the old fashined German (Old European) standard. WOW Sam, the life you lead! 👑🤗 Couldn't help but contemplate the other end of the spectrum as you were landing to LAX, of the many homeless people in L.A., as shown in the TH-cam videos from GiV -- German in Venice. It gives one pause as to the extreme options offered to humans in this life, based often (not always!) on life choices. Obviously, you've made some great choices.

In 2017, I have flown on a Lufthansa Boeing 747-8 from Seattle to and from Frankfurt for Christmas vacation. A Boeing 747 is my favorite aircraft. I’m so thankful and grateful to travel there in the pre-COVID era.
Love the classic Lufthansa livery with the blue stripe over the windows! I remember a flight in a Lufthansa 747-200 when I was a kid, also first class and it was in the front of the nose. But things looked VERY different back then. Everything was beige and brown :)

Well spotted. External shots also show the engines and wing leading edge. His camera man obviously had a seat further in the back of the aircraft. Sam traveled first class. His crew didn't... 😆
Good obs, I went to business class and found out it was only less than 1/2 full, so I moved there to get some takeoff/landing wing shots. Best row is 8A/K in my opinion on LH 747-8

Thanks for the vid. Actually my experience with LH wasn't great so far. I flew many times with them. But allmost everytime they had delays or cancellations. •Technical problems with the plain. •pilots are on strike. •flight attendant are on strike. •ground staff are on strike. •air traffic controllers are on strike. All of them have different contracts and unions. So at least four time a year you are likely to get hit by one of their strikes. I understand and accept their labour rights as they are working human beings....so I am. But with all of the costs and financial harms the passanger get left allone. Additionally the staff is impolite and respectless. The past years before pandemic I used LH allmost weekly in german domestic flights for business. The prices there were asking for were ridiculous. Almost like a cheap flight to Korea. The last straw they brought was last minute acancelled flight (again). The ground staff of LH handed me over for replacement a Train Ticket. I know it's not their fallt, so I kept polite to the lady while checking my ticket. So I asked her if she made a mistake, because LH gave me for replacement a 2nd class train ticket....which costs around 20 bucks that time. She said it is right because I "only" had a 2nd class flight ticket (obviously for a 50 min. Flight). But this "only 2nd class ticket costs several hundrets bucks! So it was my first time I get mad on an airport after hundret flights. And it was my last time flying with LH. Within Germany I travel only by train since them. For any other flights I would rather chop my legs off but never fly with that unreliable, unprofessional, rude scamers anytime. Even if I have to transfer. Alltough I'm living 15 Min away from FRA Airport. For most internationale flight I use THY, Qatar. But LH is just a joke. Sorry for bother you....I hope you enjoyed LH anyway.

That first class experience definitely is five stars, all on a retro livery 747-830. Doesn't get better than that.

I probably built that aircraft. I worked for Boeing for 5 years as a heavy structures mechanic in the 46-48 section, (tail section joining the pressure dome and skin laps). I also built the 41-42 section for 6 months (nose section). Flying Lufthansa 1st class has always been on my bucket list. They in my opinion are the premier experience for any airline company. I envy you for the opportunity and am grateful for their hospitality of your shared experience. I know they wined and dined you for clout and that's ok but as an Boeing employee who was never even allowed to walk through a finished product; to see this is exciting never the less. Best wishes to Lufthansa and the dying undefeated "Queen of the Skies" 747.
P.S. please stop calling it "retro". The -800 is as modern and luxurious of an aircraft the world will ever see. It's sad it's a dead program.
I think he’s referring to the retro livery his plane was painted in. Surely, anybody flying the 747-8 would know the plane it self is anything but retro. Such a gorgeous aircraft - the B747 in all her forms will always rule the sky as The Queen.

I love the 747-8. The times of riding on the second floor. And where Sam sat. Such a big plane. But just really neat especially with the service.
Once I had the blessing of family to book the entire first class. Super cool service
Hi Sam, just for your info. Sinn is a very respectable German watch company. The watch pouch is for people who like/ need to bring another watch to travel. For a lot of First class presengers, they will have expensive formal watches. Sinn made more sporty style watches, who like to remind you to check out their catalog and bring one or two home.

My very first intercontinental flight was on Lufthansa Business on the 747 hump in 1990. I can never forget that flight.
I like how the staff are so friendly
I flew First Class with BA four years ago and the difference here is monumental.. Staff are attentive, you're being treated well.. My flight, boarding the plane felt no different to boarding in Economy, staff were there and friendly but didn't have a huge amount of contact, on my outbound flight I didn't even get an amenity bag, neither did my daughter. The only time I really felt like anything special was being able to eat with my daughter at a table between us, setting this up was the only time the staff really made me feel like I was paying for something extra. Fly First on BA was such a let down that I will never do it again, would rather save some money and fly Business.
After flying internationally for several decades I can honestly say BA is a small step ahead of American Airlines. That's not a good thing!
People like Me who cannot afford the First Class and Business Class see the world through Your eyes... Wish You more n more beautiful journeys so that we can live a part of Your life .... Cheers !

Great video, its so sad the mighty 747 is disappearing from the skies, around half an hour from my home, there is a long line of 747s waiting to be parted out.

My last LH 748 first class flight was Dec 31 from PVG to FRA. It was empty on the nose of the cabin. Upon arrival, I received email about sars like virus since I was in Wuhan just days before… and I had only flew few times since then. Missed the 748.

Although i understand the reasoning behind leaving the 747 (4) engines, I still miss the Jumbo a lot. Flying the 777 is not the same! Maybe Lufthansa has another vision.
for Lufthansa as they are very big on cargo the 747 makes a lot of sense. The bigger the aircraft the more cargo it can take. in some routs the passengers are just a bonus.

@@julosx almost all passenger aircrafts if not all have a cargo holt. they often hold more then only the luggage of the people flying.
Like mail, flowers, medication, books or about anything people want to fly over because they need it with in days and not weeks. for the majority that cargo is taken care by passenger aircrafts as they already fly a scheduled fixed route.
@julosx Lufthansa Cargo is a pretty big operation. Not as big as UPS or FedEx, but still impressive. They choose MD-11’s and 777’s mostly for their cargo operations. Would be cool to see them convert their old 747 passenger planes to cargo versions (BCF), but Lufthansa puts so many hours on their passenger planes, they’re pretty well spent by the time they retire them.
I was lucky enough to fly this exact aircraft in August of 2018. She's absolutely gorgeous!

Their services is beyond perfect!
Once, the business class & first was full and I had to travel premium.
They still gave me full business class service and had the seat next to me empty for a better experience!
I traveled with all the companies! Lufthansa is def one of the best 🎉
Love your travel logs Sam. Everytime we fly out of FRA we book 1st class and make sure we start our journey at the Lufthansa First Class terminal. There is no better place to start a journey than that. Other airlines have great 1st class seating and amenities, Lufthansa is quality in the old fashined German (Old European) standard. Hope to bump into you some day.

Couldn't help but contemplate the other end of the spectrum as you were landing to LAX, of the many homeless people in L.A., as shown in the TH-cam videos from GiV -- German in Venice.
It gives one pause as to the extreme options offered to humans in this life, based often (not always!) on life choices.
Obviously, you've made some great choices.
They chose to use and abuse drugs and alcohol and live a homeless life. Homelessness is a choice in America 🇺🇸 the land of Milk 🥛 🐄 and honey 🍯 🐝
First Class is the only Lufthansa product that's truly deserves five stars.

In 2017, I have flown on a Lufthansa Boeing 747-8 from Seattle to and from Frankfurt for Christmas vacation. A Boeing 747 is my favorite aircraft. I’m so thankful and grateful to travel there in the pre-COVID era.
Another great video, I travel extensively, and I have never found anything that Sam has stated that I would challenge.
Love the classic Lufthansa livery with the blue stripe over the windows! I remember a flight in a Lufthansa 747-200 when I was a kid, also first class and it was in the front of the nose. But things looked VERY different back then. Everything was beige and brown :)
Loved the video! Curious to understand how Sam sits in 1A (left side) yet external shots are all out of a right side window? Was there an empty seat on the right (in business?) where you could set up your external camera(s)?
Well spotted. External shots also show the engines and wing leading edge. His camera man obviously had a seat further in the back of the aircraft. Sam traveled first class. His crew didn't... 😆

Good obs, I went to business class and found out it was only less than 1/2 full, so I moved there to get some takeoff/landing wing shots. Best row is 8A/K in my opinion on LH 747-8

Actually my experience with LH wasn't great so far.
I flew many times with them.
But allmost everytime they had delays or cancellations.
•Technical problems with the plain.
•pilots are on strike.
•flight attendant are on strike.
•ground staff are on strike.
•air traffic controllers are on strike.
All of them have different contracts and unions. So at least four time a year you are likely to get hit by one of their strikes.
I understand and accept their labour rights as they are working human beings....so I am.
But with all of the costs and financial harms the passanger get left allone.
Additionally the staff is impolite and respectless.
The past years before pandemic I used LH allmost weekly in german domestic flights for business. The prices there were asking for were ridiculous.
Almost like a cheap flight to Korea.
The last straw they brought was last minute acancelled flight (again).
The ground staff of LH handed me over for replacement a Train Ticket.
I know it's not their fallt, so I kept polite to the lady while checking my ticket.
So I asked her if she made a mistake, because LH gave me for replacement a 2nd class train ticket....which costs around 20 bucks that time.
She said it is right because I "only" had a
2nd class flight ticket (obviously for a 50 min. Flight). But this "only 2nd class ticket costs several hundrets bucks!
So it was my first time I get mad on an airport after hundret flights.
And it was my last time flying with LH.
Within Germany I travel only by train since them.
For any other flights I would rather chop my legs off but never fly with that unreliable, unprofessional, rude scamers anytime.
Even if I have to transfer.
Alltough I'm living 15 Min away from FRA Airport.
For most internationale flight I use THY, Qatar.
But LH is just a joke.
Sorry for bother you....I hope you enjoyed LH anyway.

That In-n-Out burger at the base of the runway is a great spot to grab a double-double and watch the planes touch down.
